Riemannian Geometry and General Relativity
(Differential Geometry-2, MTH 3412, Winter 1997 )
Professor M.Shubin
Course Description:
Riemannian geometry is designed to describe the universe of creatures who live on a curved surface or in a curved space and do not know about the world of higher dimensions or do not have any access to it. One of the main notions of the Riemannian geometry is the notion of connection, which is, in fact, the key notion of the entire geometry, though it is not always explicitly formulated. The connection (or parallel transport) allows to compare what is happening at two distant points of a curved space, in spite of the fact that there is no direct and immediate way to communicate between these points. Recently connections appeared in the theory of gauge fields which is considered a basis of the modern physics of elementary particles. Earlier, in the 1910's, A.Einstein discovered that the Riemannian geometry can be successfully used to describe General Relativity which is in fact a classical theory of gravitation. (Here the word ``classical" stands as opposite to ``quantum", but the quantum theory of gravitation is still terra incognita!) By its intrinsic beauty, as well as by wealth of applications the Riemannian geometry lies at the core of modern mathematics.

Description
Presents one activity from a larger unit dealing with the laws of motion for high school students. Refers to the work of Galileo, Kepler and Newton. Use of a motion detector provides opportunity for visualizing and calculating velocity and acceleration. Graphs of distance-time or velocity-time can be translated from the actual activity manually or through the use of a graphing calculator. Includes calculation of angles using simple right triangle trigonometry. Lesson outline, as suggested by Project 2061, begins with questions relating to nature and the environment. Emphasis is placed on concept development, historical perspective, team approach, collection and use of evidence, interpretation, written and oral expression and the communication of ideas rather than the memorization of technical vocabulary. Also lists objectives (benchmarks) as they relate to the Michigan Essential Goals and Objectives For Science Education (MEGOSE), and a statement on assessment. Suggestions for supplemental reading are attached. The activity entitled "A Rolling Stone Gathers No Moss. An Investigation In Acceleration" requires the Vernier grouped program called "Physics," which can be located at web site listed. Also requires that the main program "PHYSICS" be installed on the calculator, as well as, subprograms: PHZGRAPH, PHZOPTIO, AND PHYTIMEG in order to take advantage of the many vernier probes.

Non-perturbative quantum general relativity provides a possible framework to analyze issues related to black hole thermodynamics from a fundamental perspective. A pedagogical account of the recent developments in this area is given. The emphasis is on the conceptual and structural issues rather than technical subtleties. The article is addressed to post-graduate students and beginning researchers.

Two theories revolutionized the 20th century view of space and time: Einstein's General Theory of Relativity and Quantum Mechanics. Their union has spawned elementary particle theories with extra spacetime dimensions, the inflationary model of big-bang cosmology, dark matter in the universe, radiation from quantum black holes and the fuzzy spacetime geometry of superstrings and M-theory. These developments, derived from the 19th century mathematics of Riemannian geometry and Lie groups, have in their turn inspired new directions in the pure mathematics of topology and knot theory. In view of the mission of the Michigan Center for Theoretical Physics to provide a venue for interdisciplinary studies in the mathematical sciences, this Inaugural Conference will bring together Astronomers, Cosmologists, Particle Physicists and Mathematicians to share their different perspectives on the 21st century view of spacetime.
Invited speakers include:
John Bahcall (IAS)
Jacob Bekenstein (Jerusalem)
Stanley Deser (Brandeis)
Paul Frampton (UNC, Chapel Hill)

Supersonic Wing !
This page explores quasi two-dimensional calculation of the supersonic flow over a wedge-shaped infinity-span wing
Introduction
Whenever a wedge-shaped wing moves faster than the speed of sound M shock waves , series of supersonic expansion waves , and streams intersection appears. With this Applet you can:
  • calculate and display the magical picture of supersonic flow over the wing find the exact values of flow thermo-gas-dynamic parameters in specific areas control wing geometry in "real-time" mode using a "point-and-click" interface calculate and display wave aerodynamic polar of your wing
History
In 1992, when I was working as an ordinary engineer at "Yakovlev" Aviation Company, my boss asked me to write the program that should estimate the supersonic performance of Yak-141 three-shock variable-geometry supersonic air inlet. It was not too complicated an assignment, and later I decided to implement this functionality in some kind of "real-time" software simulator. This simulator was designed for use by students at the Moscow Aviation Institute in addition to training me in the ways of the C++ Builder :-).
How To Work with Applet
You may calculate general aerodynamic parameters of the flow part that blows over the wing. There are two mechanisms that you can use to input data into the program.

Need a tutor? I can help! It is easy to fall behind in a class. Sometimes it is because the teacher's methods don't quite match your learning style. Sometimes it is because you have missed some key point and after that NOTHING makes sense. Maybe you have a big test coming up and you're having trouble staying motivated because you have too many gaps in your knowledge. Why should you study when you can't even decide what the most important points are? You know you don't know, but you're not sure what to learn first. Whatever the reason, it is often helpful to reach out for some one-on-one attention to get back on track. But choosing a tutor can be difficult. A tutor must be knowledgeable, perceptive, able to communicate clearly both verbally and graphically, and above all - patient. Online tutoring with regular, daily contact is an ideal way to clear up misconceptions before they interfere with future learning; as well as to provide motivation to stay caught up.

3.ii. Problems not involving general conditions
We give a brief tour of some enumerative problems that do not involve general conditions, but nonetheless raise some interesting questions regarding real solutions. Co ]) showed there are 4 possibilities for the number of real lines on a real cubic surface: 27, 15, 7, or 3. Recent developments in enumerative geometry (mirror symmetry) have led to the solution of a large class of similar enumerative problems involving, among other things, the number of rational curves of a fixed degree on a Calabi-Yau threefold. (See the book of Cox and Katz [ CK ].) For example, on a general quintic hypersurface in P there are 2875 lines [ Harr ], 609,250 conics [ Ka ], and 371,206,375 twisted cubics. The number of twisted cubics and higher degree rational curves was computed in the seminal paper of Candelas, de la Ossa, Green, and Parkes [ COGP ]. How many of the curves can be real in problems of this type? For example, how many real lines can there be on a real quintic hypersurface in

For nearly a century now, there has been absolutely NO concrete, pure classical treatment to the physics problems pertaining to significant fractions of the velocity of light. No alternative method has been presented that are explainable with simple, intuitive measures without having to resort to the usual framework of Special and General Relativity. There is now a simple, profound and completely overlooked classical alternative to the Special and General Relativity principles. It is the correct alternative that uses only the electrodynamics of Galilean transformations in Euclidean Space Geometry alone according to the principal axioms of the Extinction Shift Principle ; a pure classical physics discipline coined and developed by this author.
