L The Washington County Board of Education truly has its finger on the pulse of the future. Each of its classrooms has at least one computer, allowing students to explore the world outside their own county through the internet. The high school also offers college preparatory and vocational curriculums in addition to its general classes to help students reach their individual goals. Also serving Washington County is one private school. Brentwood school offers classes for grades K-12 and enrolls around 500 students each year. With a 18 to one student/teacher ratio and a commitment to preparing students for a future in higher education or the work world, Brentwood has asserted itself as a viable alternative to the public school system. Forty percent of Brentwood's faculty hold master's degrees, and all faculty members are certified. In addition to qualified faculty, Brentwood also offers its students a wide range of elective classes ranging from accounting to psychology. Brentwood also stresses the development of their students as "whole" people. The school encourages participation in extra-curricular events like debate, literary and sports to broaden each student's horizons. Brentwood has found success in literary, debate and sports competition that show the school is making he most of its talented students. Along with insurpassed educational opportunities, Washington County is home to many excellent healthcare providers. The Washington County Regional Medical Center provides comprehensive healthcare services to residents of Washington and surrounding counties in a comfortable, professional setting.

Report on the Expenditure of Lottery Funds Fiscal Year 1996 Technology Programs Technology Programs as a Percentage of the FY96 Lottery Budget The Georgia lottery has allowed schools, colleges, universities and other educational institutions to purchase millions of dollars worth of technological equipment. In the first two years of the lottery, the largest portion of lottery receipts went toward technological purchases. This trend reversed in the following year, FY96, when the smallest portion went toward technological purchases. As enrollments in the HOPE and Pre-K programs have grown, and lottery funds have stabilized, the funding for technology programs has been reduced. Technology funds have gone to four agencies: the Professional Standards Commission, the Department of Technical and Adult Education (DTAE), the Board of Regents and the Department of Education (DOE). The figure below shows how much money was awarded to each agency by fiscal year (see Figure 8). Figure 8. Technology Funding by Agency

Survey Methodology and Data Reliability
Sample Selection
The sample of public schools for the FRSS Principal/School Disciplinarian Survey on School Violence was selected from the 1993-94 NCES Common Core of Data (CCD) Public School Universe File. Over 84,000 public schools are contained in the CCD Universe File, of which almost 79,000-49,000 regular elementary schools, 14,000 regular middle schools, and 15,801 regular secondary/combined schools in the 50 states and the District of Columbia-meet the eligibility criteria for this study. Excluded from the sampling frame were special education, vocational, and alternative/other schools, schools in the territories, and schools with a high grade lower than one or ungraded.
Respondent and Response Rates
In April 1997 questionnaires were mailed to 1,415 school principals. The principal was asked either to complete the questionnaire or to have it completed by the school disciplinarian who was most knowledgeable about discipline issues at the school. Telephone followup of nonrespondents was initiated in late April, and data collection was completed in July 1997. Eleven schools were found to be out of the scope of the study (no longer in existence), and a total of 1,234 schools completed the survey. Thus, the final raw response rate was 88 percent (1,234 schools divided by the 1,404 eligible schools in the sample). The weighted overall response rate was 89 percent. Weighted item nonresponse rates ranged from percent to 0.9 percent. Because the item nonresponse was so low, imputation for item nonresponse was not implemented.

Adjudication – The process for determining if allegations brought forth in the juvenile court petition is true. An adjudicatory hearing I held to determine the facts of the case and an appropriate course of action.
Administrative Revocation – A DJJ internal procedure established to provide due process for a committed youth that is accused of violating his/her conditions of placement, which may be either an alternate placement or aftercare. Each committed youth on an alternate placement or on an aftercare plan signs Conditions of Placement. A completed Violation of Placement Form provides notice to the youth and parents of the specific condition(s) the youth has allegedly violated or failed to meet. During the preliminary hearing, the youth may admit guilt and waive a final hearing. During the final hearing, a judge with the Office of State Administrative Hearings can find the youth did or did not violate the condition(s) of his/her placement. Aftercare Services – Services provided through the Court Services Program for those youth returning home from DJJ institutions or other programs. These support services promote a smooth transition of youth into the community through supervision, counseling and assistance in networking with appropriate agencies.

DISTANCE LEARNING PROGRAMS (Dlps) / CORRESPONDENCE SCHOOLS / ONLINE SCHOOLS / SATELLITE SCHOOLS / COMPUTER-ASSISTED LEARNING I.Proper Accreditation V. Distance Learning/Correspondence Programs II. I ndependent ... IV. DETC Accredited High School Programs I. PROPER ACCREDITATION Important: Read this before you proceed! Accreditation is important as a way of validating a given school, or department within a school; it proves the organisation has been thoroughly investigated by a group of impartial experts and found worthy of approval. Accrediting agencies will investigate the mission statement of the organisation, require proof that the school is living up to its mission goals, met its academic standards, and also look into the financial standing of the academic institution. In most other nations, colleges and universities are chartered by their national or provincial governments. Eg., the UK the Open and Distance Learning Quality Council assesses distance learning programs. But the bad news is that investigating accreditation of US schools can be really confusing, like opening a can of worms. There are many different accrediting agencies. Also beware that many "unaccredited" US schools call themselves accredited in their prospectuses and websites.. You really need to understand what the recognised accrediting agencies are. For example, the Department of Education does not accredit any school or institution, it merely "licenses" it or approves it as fulfilling certain legal requirements in order to exist at all, ranging from incorporation to certification or other state approval. Many schools which call themselves accredited private schools are in fact "licensed" schools.

This project will support the development of legislative strategies for Georgia, to assist cities in Georgia in completing their application and organization process to become new Clean Cities, and to directly support the position of Clean Cities Coordinator for the Atlanta metropolitan area. The project will provide for the development of a long-term AFV legislative plan for Georgia, assist petitioning Clean Cities and provide direct assistance to the Clean Cities Atlanta coalition in its continued work in coordinating alternative fuel vehicle (AFV) activities in Georgia. Funding for Statewide legislative initiatives and coalition building and Clean Cities Atlanta support will help create a substantial AFV market in the State of Georgia. 2. CLEAN CITIES/ALTERNATIVE FUELS FUNDING: $50,000 Project: Marietta City Schools CNG Bus Project Under this project Marietta City Schools and the Marietta Board of Education will acquire a school bus dedicated to the use of compressed natural gas (CNG). Grant funds will be used to pay the incremental cost between the CNG bus and a conventionally fueled bus. The bus will be integrated within the fleet of sixty-two buses, and is estimated to travel approximately 11,000 miles during the school year. Located within metropolitan Atlanta, the City of Marietta is included in the purview of the Clean Cities Atlanta organization. Records will be kept comparing the miles traveled, fuel consumption, maintenance concerns and actual cost to operate the CNG bus with a new diesel bus to be introduced into the fleet at the same time. The Marietta City Schools and the Marietta Board of Education will make all data available through networks of both the State Department of Education and the bus fleet operators throughout the State.

Project Adventure Programs for Youth at Risk In addition to the extensive range of consulting and training services that Project Adventure offers, we also implement residential and alternative programs for at-risk youth. Applying our Adventure-based counseling techniques and our group-oriented approach, we promote the well-being of the youth we serve enabling them to sustain their gains. The youth who graduate from our programs leave with improved social skills, academic proficiency, ability to problem solve, basic living skills and more. This is accomplished without the use of restraints or seclusion. Since establishing our first program in 1982, we have continued to refine and develop our ensuing programs, constantly improving and keeping our methodology current. All programs described below are delivered at our Georgia site and serve youth from Georgia. These are representative, but not inclusive, of all our programs. Challenge , our first and founding program, is an eight-week residential alternative to incarceration. Incorporating the concepts of Adventure therapy, the Challenge program reduces delinquent behavior by developing the socialization skills, self-confidence and motivation necessary to succeed in school and/or the work place. It has received the Exemplary Project Award from the Georgia Governor's Advisory Council on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. A
