GEORGIAN PROSECUTOR GENERAL'S OFFICE FAILS TO MEET RUSSIA'S REQUEST TO EXTRADITE REBELS
Prosecutor General's Office of Georgia fails to meet the request of its Russian colleagues to extradite 13 residents of North Caucasus who were members of illegal armed formations and infiltrated into the Georgian territory in early June.
Dali Sadatierashvili, head of Prosecutor General's press-service said Thursday to RIA Novosti that Prosecutor's Office's international department can adopt the corresponding decision only on receiving conclusions of the state security ministry which is investigating this case.
According to Sadatierashvili, so far the investigation is not completed and it is not known when the ministry will be able to present the conclusion to the Prosecutor's Office.
This week the Russian Prosecutor General's Office sent an international-legal request to the Georgian authorities to extradite 13 insurgents, mainly residents of Kabardino-Balkaria (a Northyern Caucasus republic). They were detained in early June by Georgian frontier guards in the mountainous Mesti district (Western Georgia) for illegal border-crossing. Only two of them had IDs - passports and military cards. Three men had assault rifles. The border-crossers used the old alpine route spanning through Dongus-Urumbashi pass - 3,200 above sea-level in order to penetrate into Georgia.

Issue Today. Home Articles - Education Choosing the best school Whether your child will be in kindergarten and you are confronting this decision for the first time, or whether you live in a school district that offers a choice of schools—public or private—from which you can pick, or whether you are moving to another part of the country and trying to determine the school district and neighborhood in which to buy a house, the decision is a difficult one and should depend on information about the school itself, as well as comparative standardized test scores. School quality depends on many factors, not all easily measurable, and not all equally important for each individual child or family. Based on knowledge of their own child, parents may want to consider what is most important to their particular situation: Small class size? A culturally diverse student and teacher population? The availability of extracurricular activities like band or orchestra? Second language opportunities in Japanese or Latin? A particular teaching approach, like mixed-age grouping or Montessori? High test scores?

The History of Lazarus Lazarus is the charity centre of the Georgian Orthodox Patriarchate and the implementing agency for its humanitarian assistance programs. It is a non-governmental and not-for-profit organization. Its aim is to co-ordinate contributions of humanitarian aid from both local and international donors and ensure that assistance reaches beneficiaries directly and effectively. Lazarus originated in the outreach efforts of the Church to assist victims of the conflict in Sukhumi during the separatist fighting in Abkhazia in the Spring of 1992. Assistance was initially provided by a group of volunteers, both clergy and parishioners. The Church and the volunteers provided all the material and financial support themselves. For six months, throughout the bombardment, food supplies were delivered to the homes of 300 housebound disabled and elderly people. At the same time volunteers in Tbilisi were working in groups of twenty to assist IDPs from Abkhazia and South Ossetia as they arrived in the city seeking refuge. Again most of the initial assistance was funded by the volunteers themselves and from contributions from friends and relatives. As the scale of the political and economic crisis broadened and assistance began to arrive from international aid organizations, a Charity Centre was established in Tbilisi in order to identify the greatest need and co-ordinate the distribution of emergency relief donations. Volunteer staff developed a questionnaire, interviewed IDPs and other categories of persons in need and co-ordinated aid.

    Emory Report May 18, 1999 Volume 51, No. 31
Morris a student of life-and business By his own admission, Barry "B.J." Morris has always been a learner. More than 20 years ago when he finished his undergraduate days as a star football player at Tulane University, professional football beckoned, but Morris chose to learn about the world of business and politics. Then, with 10 years of white-collar experience under his belt, Morris made a learning decision again, leaving the professional world of banking and finance to start graduate school at Goizueta Business School. Twelve years later he's earned his doctorate from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and Morris is still learning-and helping others do the same. Two years ago he helped create Whitefield Academy, a college preparatory school in Atlanta, and he's been an instructor and assistant professor at Georgia Tech and Georgia State University. "From an early age, I have had this burning curiosity about 'the world' and a desire to understand it better," said Morris, who's spent the last seven years doing a longitudinal study in Europe on the relationships between international financial institutions, private investment firms and formerly Communist democracies. "I was not particularly interested in the prestige associated with [an Emory] degree-I wanted understanding." What Morris wants now-besides spending time with his wife, Tanya, and children, Timothy and Tiffany-is to continue sharing with others what he's learned by teaching international business in an Atlanta university, consulting with firms and/or governments and also by creating educational opportunities for Georgia's underprivileged. "I'd like to place computer labs in the projects and create boarding schools for the poorest kids in Georgia, kids in prison or boarding schools," he said.

June 2002 ....Thoric Cederstrom, a senior technical advisor for Counterpart International, participated in the World Initiative for Soy in Human Health (WISHH) Midwest Workshop on May 8-10 in Illinois and Indiana. At the workshop, representatives of Private Voluntary Organizations like Counterpart expanded their knowledge about soy for international diets. As a result, Cederstrom took textured soy protein (tsp) to the Republic of Georgia where he started feeding trials for children in a new school lunch program funded by the Global Food for Education Initiative of USDA. Based on the success, Cederstom is now negotiating with private sector donors for more containers to fully launch Counterpart’s use of tsp. Why was Counterpart International interested in a pilot project with tsp in Georgia? “We see TSP as an excellent product for our school feeding program in conjunction with other traditional USDA commodities. It provides school-age children with an
