You are visitor number Welcome to Flint River Presbytery! Our web servant updates this site periodically. Flint River is one of 173 presbyteries in the 50 states and Puerto Rico. A presbytery consists of its member ministers and elected commissioners from its member congregations. It is the oversight body of its member ministers and congregations. This presbytery meets four times annually. Geographically, Flint River Presbytery encompasses fifty-one counties of southwest Georgia (actually from Thomaston on the far north, to Macon and Columbus, and southward to the Florida line) and fifty-five congregations. Within our bounds lie PLAINS, home of former president Jimmy Carter; AMERICUS, home of historic Koinonia Community, and its even more famous child, Habitat For Humanity; and FORT BENNING, a U.S. military installation near Columbus, and the WARNER ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE. The soil and climate are ideal for peanut growing, and this is indeed peanut country. Tens of thousands of acres are devoted to this legume, and approaching our many small towns one first sees the silhouettes of easily recognized peanut processing plants. The Presbytery sponsors a campus ministry at Georgia Southwestern College, Americus; Valdosta State University at Valdosta; and a ministry at Columbus State University is being developed.

Two 18th century churches tell of Old World persecution, New World perseverence GEORGIA Jerusalem still an active congregation BY STEVE SCHOLAR S tanding amid a grove of oak and Georgia pine 30 miles north of Savannah, Ga., Jerusalem Lutheran Church is a microcosm of American history. Built between 1767 and 1769 by Lutherans whose families had been exiled 30 years earlier from Salzburg, Austria, for their religious beliefs, today it is home to the oldest active ELCA congregation. The "Salzburgers," as the immigrants were known, arrived in Savannah in 1734175 on four ships sponsored by the English "Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge." They settled on the banks of Ebenezer Creek and established the village of Ebenezer. But the soil was poor, and many lost their lives to famine and disease. Two years later they moved a short distance to the more fertile banks of the Savannah River and founded New Ebenezer. The Salzburgers held regular worship services and Sunday school classes and also founded the first orphanage in America, a sad necessity. But it was more than 33 years before the first brick of the church was laid. Visitors who look closely at the bricks can see several that still show distinct fingerprints of the men who made them from nearby red clay deposits. The 21-inch thick walls help keep the church cool during the hot and humid Georgia summers.

WHITFIELD COUNTY, GEORGIA Whitfield County was formed in 1851 from part of Murray County which lies on it's eastern boundary. Whitfield County lies in northwestern Georgia and is bordered by the Tennessee state line on it's northern side and by Catoosa, Walker, Gordon and Murray Counties, counterclockwise, on it's other boundaries. Whitfield, Georgia's 97th county was named after Reverend George Whitefield, an early settler of Georgia and the founder of the Bethesda Orphan House in Savannah. The spelling of the county name was later changed to reflect the way it was pronounced. There are five towns within Whitfield County, these being the county seat, Dalton (formerly Cross Plains), Cohutta, Varnell, Tunnel Hill and Rocky Face. In 1990 the census for Whitfield County was 72,462 with Dalton having 21,761 residents.
