Sandy Procter says a farmers’ market is a place for healthy foods and healthy families. "I’m not saying that there will never be room for a Twinkie or a donut, but help your child understand that these ‘sometimes’ foods are exceptions to the rule, [which is that] crisp, juicy fruits and vegetables are excellent snack foods." Procter said markets provide an opportunity for parents to teach their kids how to choose ripe, tasty foods. She said asking children’s opinion about food choices reinforces the food lesson and lets them know their opinions matter. In addition, Procter said studies show that children involved in shopping for and selecting foods are more likely to accept and eat those foods. Emily Mark, a K-State Research and Extension family and consumer sciences specialist, said parents can even let their children spend their own money to buy something at the market "They learn how to select the tomato and what is a quality tomato, but they also learn to budget their money," Mark said.

RECORD-BREAKING ATTENDANCE AT THE
BALTIMORE, MD, March 19, 2003 - Hundreds of foodservice professionals gathered at the winter F.A.B., Inc Sales and Marketing Conference held in Baltimore, Maryland to attend the most successful F.A.B., Inc. buying show to date. Entitled “Take Stock in Frosty Acres,” the show floor was designed after the New York Stock Exchange, complete with members and suppliers closing deals, bells signaling specials and confetti falling as orders were placed and agreements signed.
“This year’s show was a resounding success, thanks to a new show floor, an extraordinary line-up of speakers and exciting events, and exceptional attendees,” said Mr. Terry Snyder, Chairman of F.A.B., Inc. “The show offers suppliers and members the unique opportunity to come together to focus on developing programs to create growth.”
Attendees were able to learn about new product offerings, view and sample products at the Product Display Luncheon and place orders in a relaxed and comfortable setting. Two valuable and informative sales manager seminars were offered entitled “Best Practices” and “Bringing out the Best in Others,” designed to offer sales managers practical strategies for improving sales and enhancing their management practices. Committee meetings were also held throughout the weekend, offering members an opportunity to discuss relevant issues in today’s foodservice industry.
Plans are currently underway for the F.A.B., Inc. Summer Sales and Marketing Conference, to be held in Atlanta, Georgia August 9-12, 2003.

FSIS POLICIES CONCERNING PRODUCTS MADE FROM RECALLED TRIM July 23, 2002: Food Safety and Inspection Service Acting Administrator William Hudnall and other FSIS officials met with industry representatives to provide guidance on how the agency expects companies that received recalled trimmings (as well as coarse ground beef) to proceed.
1. If the recalled trimmings (or coarse ground beef) were used in the production of ready-to-eat products manufactured under inspection, no product retrieval would be required. A company would be advised to document what days any recalled trim was used and review its HACCP records to verify the lethality CCP was met.

Even though the Russian Agriculture Ministry will keep accepting U.S. poultry imports until the end of August. The poultry dispute is still centered on new veterinary certificates. Russia has demanded new veterinary certificates accompanying poultry imports and warned the United States that it would ban all U.S. poultry imports the end of August without the new certificates.

Travelers Still Booking Trips, Despite Higher Gas Prices (LOS ANGELES, May 17, 2001) "Despite the marked increase in gas prices, our members are still planning vacations this summer at about the same rate as last year," said Tim Irwin, the Auto Club’s vice president for travel services. "Some are economizing by cutting a day or two off their trips, staying at a less expensive hotel or picking a closer destination, but they are still traveling." AAA’s annual vacation cost survey shows that a family of two adults and two children can expect to pay an average of $238 per day for food and lodging while traveling in California. Last year’s average cost for California travelers was $230 per day. Statewide family lodging costs are averaging $136 a night, not including local taxes and "energy surcharges" of $3 to $10 per day now being assessed by many hotels. In the last 10 years, the average cost of meals and lodging has increased by 24 percent nationwide. That figure is modest compared with previous decades: from 1981-1991, those costs rose 105 percent; from 1971-1981, the increase was 167 percent.
