Under the new map, the 4th Congressional District encompasses most of DeKalb County and the southwest portion of Gwinnett County. The district buttresses the City of Atlanta proper on the eastern border of the city. 87% of the district's population live in DeKalb County. Incorporated cities in DeKalb County are:

    F. Georgia and The Colchis (Land of the Golden Fleece)
    History
Georgia embraced Christianity about the year 330; its conversion is attributed to a holy captive woman, St. Nino. During the next three centuries, Georgia was involved in the conflict between the Byzantine and Persian empires. Lazica on the Black Sea (incorporating the ancient Colchis) became closely bound to Byzantium. Iberia passed under Iranian control, though toward the end of the 5th century a hero arose in the person of King Vakhtang Gorgaslani, a ruler of legendary valour who for a time reasserted Georgia's national sovereignty. The Sasanian monarch Khosrow I (reigned 531-579) abolished the Iberian monarchy, however. For the next three centuries, local authority was exercised by the magnates of each province, vassals successively of Iran, of Byzantium, and, after AD 654, of the Arab caliphs, who established an emirate in T'bilisi. Toward the end of the 9th century, the Bagratid Ashot I the Great settled at Artanuji in Tao (southwestern Georgia), receiving from the Byzantine emperor the title of kuropalates ("guardian of the palace"). In due course, Ashot profited from the weakness of the Byzantine emperors and the Arab caliphs and set himself up as hereditary prince in Iberia. King Bagrat III (975-1014) later united all the principalities of eastern and western Georgia into one state. T'bilisi, however, was not recovered from the Muslims until 1122, when it fell to King David II Aghmashenebeli ("the Builder"; reigned 1089-1125).

Curriculum and Materials: Individual Subjects - Geography Icon Key Non-Java Version Mapping The World By Heart
"An innovative middle school geography program, has achieved astonishing results in classrooms around the world. After eight months of a curriculum that combines memorization with the real use of knowledge, practice, mnemonics, and cooperative games, students can draw, entirely from memory, detailed world maps which include the names, borders, mountain ranges, rivers, and cities of over 170 countries" Runkle Publishers
"As adults we know a task must be repeated time and time again until it becomes second nature to us. My mapping method stresses this belief. It is very structured and uses all four methods of learning. Not all students learn in the same manner, so we offer the complete range of learning styles. Students will read, speak, listen, and manipulate on a daily basis." Back to top of page Lara Kimber

Introduction [Top of Page] Background: Georgia was absorbed into the Russian Empire in the 19th century. Independent for three years (1918-1921) following the Russian revolution, it was forcibly incorporated into the USSR until the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991. Russian troops remain garrisoned at four military bases and as peacekeepers in the separatist regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. The country continues to move toward a market economy and greater integration with Western institutions. Geography
History Demographics Economy ... Home State of Georgia
    • Georgia's land area of 57,906 square miles makes it the largest state east of the Mississippi River (24th overall). The total area of the state's three largest counties-Ware, Burke, and Clinch (2,565 square miles)-is greater than the area of the entire state of Delaware (1,954 square miles).
Georgia falls within five major physiographic regions: the Blue Ridge Mountains in the northeast, the Ridge and Valley Providence and the Cumberland Plateau in the northwest, the Piedmont across Georgia's center, and the Coastal Plain in the south. Elevations range from sea level to 4,784 feet at Brasstown Bald in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Blue Ridge mountain area features the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail, a 2,100 mile hiking trail ending in Maine. The mountain range's peaks were once higher than the Rockies, but some 100 million years of erosion has worn them down to about a quarter of their original height. Nonetheless, the mountains attract millions of visitors each year, particularly in the summer and fall.
The Piedmont area is home to the red clay soil of Georgia and its rolling hills and valleys. Southwest Georgia is known for its abundant farmland. The Coastal Plains feature the tidal swamps and lowlands of the coast and the northern reaches of the Okefenokee Swamp. Georgia's beaches are popular with vacationers.
