About Vann Baker
One Brat's Story
by Vann Baker My experience of growing up in the military began for me when I six years old. My father, Robert Vaughn Baker, who had been drafted and served in the Korean War, decided to re-enlist in the U.S. Army in 1962. We were living in Columbus, Georgia at the time. I remember starting the first grade in Columbus and going to school for just about a week. Then we were on two planes and then a jet over the ocean, headed for what was then called West Germany. I lived four years in Mannheim, Germany and enjoyed every minute of it, especially the snow. (Growing up in the south didn't include any snow for me). In those days you could get 4 marks to one dollar and just about all German businesses accepted U.S. currency. The photograph on the right was taken in Saltzburg just before our ride down into the salt mine. (I'm the second from the left). Our family took regular weekend excursions and we explored dozens of castles when my father was not in the field. In 1966 we returned to the U.S. on the U.S.S. Patch. After getting our sea legs the second day, we had a blast exploring the ship and trying to get into trouble. From New York we traveled by car to Columbus, Georgia, to visit my grandparents and my uncles, then we on the road again to El Paso, Texas. We were stationed a year at Ft.Biggs.

I remember that one year we even found two "Frankenstein" castles, no doubt inspired by the movie. In 1966 we returned to the U.S. on the U.S.S. Patch. After getting our sea legs the second day, we had a blast exploring the ship and trying to get into trouble. From New York we traveled by car to El Paso, Texas and stayed a year at Ft. Biggs. It was quite a change from Germany, with 1 percent humidity and hardly any rain with sand dunes and tumbleweeds stretching for miles outside the base. We spent a lot of our time patching our bicycle tires because of the sand spurs.

http://www.tttga.net/
Congratulations on your interest in teaching in Georgia. We have a great need for public school teachers in the state. The Troops to Teachers Program is a joint effort between the U.S. Department of Education and the Department of Defense. The purpose of the program is to assist men and women who have served the Nation as members of the Armed Forces and are now seeking a second career as teachers in America's public schools. Eligible service members may receive federal funding to help them meet state certification requirements as teachers and for agreeing to teach in high needs schools.
The Troops to Teachers Program is not a teacher certification program. Troops to Teachers Candidates must meet the same certification requirements that any other teacher must meet. It does however provide financial assistance to eligible individuals in the form of a stipend up to $5K to help pay for teacher certification costs, or a bonus of up to $10K to teach in a "high needs" schools

BELARUSIAN PRESIDENT GREETS MILITARY ACADEMY GRADUATES
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko arrived Wednesday at the command staff department of the National Military Academy to greet its graduates. "The complicated international situation calls for the reinforcement of Belarus' defence potential, the protection of its sovereignty and territorial integrity," he noted.
The graduates are being dispatched to the army as it is undergoing reform, said Lukashenko. "Before long, our army will be deservedly called a mobile, controllable and well-equipped one," he said, adding that particular emphasis in the army reform will be laid on training and preserving officers.
The military academy was founded under a 1995 decree of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, on the basis of two military schools, of command and engineering.

BOOT CAMPS AND THERAPEUTIC WILDERNESS EXPEDITIONS
- A Different Philosophy
B y Lon Woodbury Boot camps are in the news again: another death, allegations of horrific abuse, and an after-the-fact investigation. This time it involves a program called Buffalo Soldiers in Arizona. To my mind, it is the same old, same old. [Earlier stories can be found in Woodbury Reports online archives, Boot Camp Programs #23, August 1993; Boot Camp Violence #73, September 2000; NC Boot Camp Closed #72, August 2000; Boot Camps Lose Luster #65, January 2000; Alleged Abuse in Georgia Boot Camp #76, December 2000]. I think reports of boot camp tragedies are going to increase for two reasons. Adding to this confusion is the degree of respect military schools have gained as a method of fostering discipline. Also, many people had a boot camp experience when serving in the military. Many people think, “boot camp and/or military school, did me a lot of good; maybe it will help these troubled teens.” Sometimes they are right, but only when considering a particular type of child who has a specific set of problems. A military type program can help the child who is essentially intact psychologically but is floundering and could benefit from some direction. However, a military based program is very poor at helping the child who is in open rebellion, and feels “everything would be fine if my parents, (that is, authority) would just get off my back.” Putting this child into an extremely authoritative program is asking for trouble and ineffectiveness.

The Association of Military Colleges and Schools of the United States (AMCSUS) is a nonprofit service organization which serves as the binding force and communication hub for its member schools. The purpose, as put forth in its Constitution, is to promote the common interest of all members and to advance their welfare; promote and maintain high scholastic, military and ethical standards in member schools; represent the mutual interests of the member schools before the Department of Defense as well as the general public; foster and extend patriotism and respect for duly constituted authority; and cultivate citizens who love peace and who strive to maintain it. Regular membership is extended to essentially military schools which have a member of the armed services detailed or approved by the Department of Defense, and which maintain good standing in their regional accrediting organization. (An "essentially military" school is defined as an institution with military programs approved by one of the military services and which organizes its student body as a cadet corps, with students habitually in uniform and continually under military discipline while under the jurisdiction of the college or school.) Associate membership may be granted to schools offering a military program but which do not otherwise qualify for regular membership.

http://www.gmc.cc.ga.us/about/history.html
About GMC Admissions Academics Military Program Institutional Development Athletics Alumni Relations
Georgia Military College was created in 1879 by act of the Georgia General Assembly "to educate young men and women from the Middle Georgia area in an environment which fosters the qualities of good citizenship." It was the apparent intention of the General Assembly to establish the school as a unit of the slowly forming University System. State property in Milledgeville was loaned to the University of Georgia by the Act of 1879, and the Board of Trustees of the University of Georgia was given veto powers by this Act over the acts of the local Board of Trustees of the new institution. The school was originally called Middle Georgia Military and Agricultural College and was ceded state government lands surrounding the Old Capitol Building, the seat of government for the State of Georgia from 1807-1868. The Old Capitol Building, then as now, is the main college facility and sits on the highest point in Milledgeville. The College was founded in an era when what we now consider public education throughout the South was practically non-existent. It was apparently the intention of the legislature to take some step to correct this lack of educational opportunity. The word College as applied to the institution was, perhaps, not quite accurate. The school would begin as what would now be termed a high school; however, its curriculum, including as it did subjects far beyond the scope of the high schools of today, made it possible for GMC graduates to enroll with advanced standing into the University of Georgia and other institutions of higher learning. The General Assembly intended the new school to offer preparatory instruction that would enable graduates to enter higher classes at the University of Georgia, to give training in agriculture and mining, and, finally, to train teachers.
