Financial Aid to Build the Future Grant Winner 2002: New Haven, CT The City of New Haven under the direction of Mayor John DeStefano, Jr., is bridging the digital divide using a grant from 3Com's landmark Urban Challenge program. The generous stipend will enable the City to develop networked libraries and LEAP community learning centers throughout the city, where they will augment a wide range of after-school academic programs. Using 3Com systems, the City will move significantly closer to fulfilling its four-phased "Network New Haven" initiative, which aims to provide computer resources and training to at risk residents and school-age children living in public housing. The grant will provide New Haven with 3Com networking equipment including high-performance LAN switches and wireless systems to establish and strengthen digital networks in the four city libraries and LEAP Centers. It will support hardware and software acquisition and related consulting services at the libraries, and provide seed money for curriculum development of programs such as the "Skills for Life," which mentors, educates and employs students from eighth grade through high school graduation. New Haven also will use the grant to establish and expand community media centers for use by youth and families. These facilities will complement existing media centers within the New Haven school and library systems. 3Com will provide wireless to facilitate access to the Internet and library databases. Article by Doug Johnson Home Articles Contact information Column title, periodical, and issue: Media Trends in the Midwest, Media Educator (Georgia Library Media Association), Winter 1997 While I am flattered at being asked to write about what is happening around the Midwest, I have to say up front that you need to read this article knowing that: my information about the things that are happening in states other than Minnesota comes primarily what I read on LM_Net and from attending state library media conferences in Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois; and I tend to be very much an optimist when it comes to school media programs and education in general. How much you read is generalization based on fact, and how much is wishful thinking is difficult for even ME to separate. Be warned, Readers! Media programs in the Upper Midwest overall are better than they have ever been, and the right kind of library/media specialist is more valued than ever before. There are certainly exceptions. School districts facing systemic economic distress (Rockford, IL, for example) find the axe raised above their media programs, and librarians who cling to a text-only mind set find themselves often at odds with their students, staff, administration and the rest of the profession. But in the job-applicant glutted field of education, well-prepared media specialists find themselves in somewhat short supply. There is even a legislative initiative in Iowa to recruit teachers willing to go into media driven by the large number of non-certified media specialists now employed in schools in that state.

Its primary purpose is to provide services and materials to students and teachers through the school library media programs. The department's staff of three administrators, three library media specialists, two catalogers, and nine auxiliary members provides support to 120+ schools and centers and other special programs.
