UGA backing bills to curb sports recruiting abuses
By Dave Williams

Morris News Service ATLANTA - The University of Georgia is getting behind two bills pending in the House aimed at overzealous athletic boosters and sports agents.
SIGN 'EM UP
Today is National Signing Day, the first day high school football players can sign letters of intent to play football next year at their chosen schools. Starting at 8 a.m., the fax machine at Georgia's Butts-Mehre Building will be buzzing as player after player pledges the next four years to the Bulldogs. Coming tomorrow: Complete coverage of the student-athletes the Bulldogs are expected sign.
The booster bill would make it a felony for anyone to give money or other gifts to induce a high school student-athlete to enroll in a particular university. Maximum penalties would be five years in prison, a $100,000 fine or both. The measure also would give universities the right to sue offenders for damages. The bill was prompted in part by recruiting violations at the University of Alabama. NCAA sanctions followed, costing the Alabama football program millions of dollars in lost revenues.

Supporters of a policy allowing teaching different theories on the origin of life cheer the board's vote. Story Tools
RELATED An explanation of the origin of life theories ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) A suburban Atlanta school board Thursday night voted unanimously to allow teachers to introduce students to different views about the origins of life. The Cobb County Board of Education, the state's second-largest school board, approved the policy change after limited discussion, calling it a "necessary element of providing a balanced education." The board's vote drew cheers from some and expressions of dismay from others in the packed meeting room. "This supposed victory [by proponents of alternate theories] was shallow, very shallow," said Jeffrey Selman. Selman and other opponents believe the new policy is a step toward introducing religion in particular, creationism in public schools. "We're going to be watching this very closely." The adopted policy, however, included language intended to clarify the board's position that its action is not an endorsement of one particular theory over another.

FOR RELEASE FRIDAY, JUNE 5, 1998
Foundations for the Future dedicates $2 million forum
"Education is AT&T's number one community focus," said Ray Robinson, president of AT&T's Southern Region. "Through our $2 million grant, we are helping to jump-start the distribution and dissemination of technology information to all teachers throughout our state." In past years, AT&T provided Georgia classrooms with Internet wiring, teacher training seminars on effectively using technology in the classroom, computers and funding for homework hotlines. The Forum's initial focus is to help accelerate the application of telecommunications technology for collaborative learning, remote access to educational facilities and Internet-based resources. Through the development of a "classroom of the future" studio, programs on the effective use of multiple technologies, innovative learning and teaching concepts can be distributed throughout the state via satellite, using the Georgia Public Broadcasting PeachStar network, video streaming and video conferencing over the Internet. "Foundations for the Future and the newly created Forum offer a much needed link in Georgia's technology education system," said Governor Zell Miller. " Many schools are wired and own hardware and computer programs, but many educators need help in effectively using the technology. Through the Foundation, educators can learn to use their current technology and programs, get recommendations about their specific technological needs, and secure funds through grants and matching donors. The Foundation serves as a virtual clearinghouse of technology resources for all Georgia educators." The state of Georgia recently announced a $278,000 grant to the Foundation.

roots are in humanistic and transpersonal psychology. Our courses range from classically humanistic
concerns like the centrality of human subjective experience in psychology, holistic approaches to
psychological understanding, human growth and development, and the enhancement of human potential
to contemporary attention to transpersonal and spiritual horizons. Themes such as the meaning of genuine community, sociality, understanding oneself and others, and the myriad ways through which we grow and develop are central to our academic learning environment. < Emory School of Law

An Emory legal education trains lawyers to meet the challenges of today and the opportunities of tomorrow. Developing mature, sensitive judgment in persons who will be among this country's decision makers requires more than a knowledge of rules of law and an ability to analyze problems. At Emory Law, six hundred students from almost every state, several foreign countries, and nearly two hundred undergraduate institutions work together with an experienced faculty to learn how to use law in dealing with the changing problems of an increasingly complex society. The study of law at Emory is a process of continuing intellectual development.
The Emory University School of Law has a long and valued tradition in the use of the honor system. Clients place confidence and trust in their lawyers, and society entrusts lawyers with the care of its laws. Thus, an integral part of a law student's education is adherence to the honor system. Mission Statement
The law school aspires to create a climate in which equality of all persons and openness to critical consideration of all ideas are encouraged and sustained. To that end, the law school intends that each person and every scholarly activity be valued and that the whole fabric of scholarship and community be regarded as greater than the sum of individual parts.

Westville Georgia Keeping the 1850s Alive in the 21st Century By Carolyn Williams Imagine what it would be like to do business without a cell phone or a computer, or if air conditioning never was invented. How would one get around without a car? Did life really exist before all of our modern conveniences? Apparently it did, and the southwestern Georgia town of Westville is dedicated to keeping the memory of that time alive. Located in Stewart County, Westville is a "living history" town, preserving the way life was in 1850 by continuing practices from that era. It is also an "open-air museum" where visitors walk around outdoors to see artifacts showcased in various buildings.
