About the CoE ... Where can I obtain a certification application packet?
When do I apply for field experiences?
See the Certification Deadlines.
How do I apply for my first Georgia teaching certificate?
At the end of each student teaching semester (fall and spring semesters) a Final Student Teacher Seminar is held. Certification applications are completed at that time as a group. This is handled in this way to insure accuracy of the application so as not to delay processing.
When do I apply for my first Georgia teaching certificate?
At the end of your student teaching semester.
How long does the process take?
For first time certificates in Georgia, the process is usually between 4 to 6 weeks from start to finish. Applications cannot be processed until after graduation of the semester of program completion because all grades and degree statements (when applicable) must be posted on the official transcripts. Official transcripts are attached to the certification applications before forwarding to the Professional Standards Commission (PSC). Once the applications arrive at the PSC, there is a 24-hour turn around period and then certificates are mailed directly to you at the address you indicated on the application form.

Congratulations on your interest in teaching in Georgia. We have a great need for public school teachers in the state. The Troops to Teachers Program is a joint effort between the U.S. Department of Education and the Department of Defense. The purpose of the program is to assist men and women who have served the Nation as members of the Armed Forces and are now seeking a second career as teachers in America's public schools. Eligible service members may receive federal funding to help them meet state certification requirements as teachers and for agreeing to teach in high needs schools.
The Troops to Teachers Program is not a teacher certification program. Troops to Teachers Candidates must meet the same certification requirements that any other teacher must meet. It does however provide financial assistance to eligible individuals in the form of a stipend up to $5K to help pay for teacher certification costs, or a bonus of up to $10K to teach in a "high needs" schools

    Urban Alternative Preparation Program
The demands on public education have never been greater. There is an unprecedented need for competent, enthusiastic, and reflective teachers, particularly in the urban setting. The Department of Early Childhood Education is committed to providing a dynamic program for training preservice and novice teachers with an emphasis on practical classroom experience supported by intensive coaching and continual professional development. Two distinct program groups are part of the Urban Alternative Preparation Program Georgia Teacher Alternative Preparation Program (GTAPP) with south Fulton County Schools and Teach for America (TFA) with Atlanta Public Schools. (See program design for each program) GTAPP candidates begin their professional induction in salaried positions as teaching assistants (when funds are available) in K-5 urban classrooms. TFA candidates enter the program as a beginning teacher with temporary certification. The challenges of the urban classroom serve as the curriculum for interactive evening and Saturday college seminars taught by university faculty and school system staff. University and school-based mentors work closely with each candidate to ensure instructional improvement. Successful candidates will earn initial certification at the end of the first year of coursework. Professional induction continues in the second year for candidates seeking an advanced degree (M.Ed.). Year II Program of Study focuses on refining instructional skills especially in the teaching of reading and mathematics. Support from successful urban teachers and content experts will enable the novice teacher to develop his/her professional potential and gain satisfaction from their new rewarding career.

...Alternative teacher certification routes provide opportunities for people from various educational backgrounds and walks of life to become teachers.
    C. Emily Feistritzer, 1998, National Center of Education Information
Business to Teaching is a program that prepares individuals from diverse backgrounds to teach in urban, rural, and suburban districts statewide. Business to Teaching's goal is to recruit students from a wide variety of business and military backgrounds and help them use their experiences to become outstanding teachers for Georgia's students. By offering classes in the evening, at satellite campuses and online, Business to Teaching makes graduate level education accessible to people interested in making a mid-career change into teaching. Business to Teaching is not a shortcut to the classroom. The courses and field-based experiences are of the same quality demanded by the traditional University of Georgia teacher preparation programs. Teaching requires a through knowledge of the development of students and how they learn. Thus, preparing successful teachers requires a rigorous and meaningful program. The National Center for Education Information (NCEI) in Washington, D.C. estimates that more than 125,000 individuals in over 40 states have become teachers through alternative certification programs. NCEI research (February, 2000) shows that people who take part in alternative certification
