Teaching Teaching
New program helps graduates receive certification to teach. By Victor Rogers The story is ironic, but familiar. The demand for math and science teachers in the Georgia school system is high. But an engineer, physicist or chemist with years of professional experience is not considered qualified to teach math or science to Georgia middle- or high-school students. That could be changing. With a mandate from Gov. Zell Miller, Georgia's Professional Standards Commission has revamped the teacher certification process to reduce the amount of red tape. And Georgia Tech's Center for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics, and Computing (CEISMC) is making the path to a teaching career more clearly defined for Tech students. Carolyn C. Thorsen, director of CEISMC's Pre-College Programs, is working with Georgia State University officials to develop a teacher preparation program for Georgia Tech students. Tech science and engineering faculty have determined which courses meet the basic math and science requirements for teacher certification. By cross-registering at Georgia State and taking the recommended courses, Georgia Tech students will graduate with a teaching certificate in addition to their degree. Georgia State University professors will teach the education courses on Tech's campus.

Preparation and Certification State Requirements The Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC) is the teacher certification agency for the Georgia. Library media specialists (LMSs) are certified at the master degree level. An undergraduate educational degree or prior teaching certification or experience in another academic discipline is not required. Thus, a master’s degree in library information science from an approved teacher education program is required for Georgia certification as a library media specialist. A successful score on the PRAXIS I and II exams (for LMSs) is also required. Specific Teacher Certification Rules may be found at the GaPSC Web site at http://www.gapsc.org/ The rules governing LMS certification are 505-2-.116 Media Specialist 505-2-.06 Certification by Approved Programs 505-2-.08 Special Georgia Requirements 505-2-.13 Standard Renewal Requirements 505-2-.15 Certification by Reciprocity National Board Certification National Board for Professional Teaching Standards National Board Certification is a symbol of professional teaching excellence. A National Board certificate will attest that a teacher was judged by his or her peers as one who is accomplished, makes sound professional judgments about students' best interests, and acts effectively on those judgments. Offered on a voluntary basis, National Board Certification complements, but does not replace, state licensing. While state licensing systems set requirements to teach in each state, National Board Certification establishes high and rigorous advanced standards for experienced teachers to demonstrate accomplished practice.

Alternative Certification Many states have developed or are initiating programs that provide alternative routes to teacher certification, particularly for mid-career professionals. The goal of such programs is to draw a diversity of individuals with in-depth subject matter backgrounds into teaching careers. Requirements for an alternative teaching license vary by state. For an overseas position, it does not matter what state your license is from. Generally, applicants must hold a bachelors degree in the subject to be taught, achieve a passing score on state-required examinations, complete an intensive teacher preparation program, and possibly fulfill a supervised teaching internship. Specific information on which school systems are offering internships can be requested from the schools. After satisfactory completion of these requirements, the applicant will be issued a teaching credential.

Teacher Certification
Teachers and other educational personnel must be certified by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission to be employed in the state's elementary, middle, and secondary public schools. Private elementary and secondary schools may also require state certification for employment. Completion of Teacher Education Requirements: A requirement for initial certification in Georgia is completion of teacher-education requirements. This may be accomplished in one of three ways at Georgia State University. In all cases, "Entry into Teacher Education" criteria apply.
- A student may complete an approved education preparation degree program as described in the College of Arts and Sciences and College of Education chapters of this catalog.
- A student may complete or present a non-educator-preparation bachelor's degree and all additional components of an approved educator preparation degree program.
Initial certification programs in special education, library media technology, school counseling, and educational leadership are available only at the graduate level. The College of Education offers five Alternative Preparation Programs, master's degree programs which prepare students for initial certification in the following fields: early childhood education, English education, mathematics education, science education, and social studies education. "Entry into Teacher Education" criteria must be met for admittance into any of these alternative preparation programs. See the Graduate Catolog for more information on the university's master's-level programs.
