    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
April 22, 2001 GOVERNOR: GEOTHERMAL TECHNOLOGY OFFERS CLEAN ENERGY SOURCE State Continues Support for Clean Energy Alternatives to Save Money, Environment
Governor George E. Pataki today celebrated Earth Day by highlighting geothermal technology a cutting edge alternative energy source that can reduce electric bills while also protecting the environment. The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority is working with 25 schools, health care facilities, churches and business to install geothermal systems, including Westchester Country Club, which is installing a geothermal system as part of a $7 million project to reduce energy consumption by 775,000 kilowatt hours, saving $130,000 annually on energy costs. "New York State continues to lead the nation in promoting new and alternative energy sources that help protect and enhance the quality of our environment," Governor Pataki said. "Geothermal technology offers one of the most environmentally-friendly means of heating and cooling buildings while also lowering energy costs for New York's consumers. "This promising technology can play an important role in our efforts to ensure we have the power we need to continue to create jobs and offer consumers new ways to save money. Whether its solar power or geothermal technology, we must continue to expand the menu of energy options for all New Yorkers."

In stock Fossil fuels are a finite resource, and their continued use as the world’s dominant energy supply is damaging the environment. Future use of alternative methods of energy supply is inescapable, and this book explores the historical origins, technical features, marketability, and environmental impacts of the complete range of sustainable energy technologies: solar, biomass, wind, hydropower, geothermal power, ocean-energy sources, solar-derived hydrogen fuel, and energy storage. The aim is to inform policy analysts and decision makers of the options available for sustainable energy production. The book is therefore written so as to be accessible to an audience from a broad range of backgrounds and scientific training. It will also be a valuable supplementary text for advanced courses in environmental studies, energy economics and policy, and engineering.

Office of the Secretary Contact: John Wright For Immediate Release: July 22, 2002 Jo Simpson Secretary Norton Announces Geothermal Lease Sale for Nevada The president's national energy policy places a high priority on
alternative energy development, while promoting energy conservation NEVADA Secretary of the Interior Gale Norton announced today that acreage in eight Known Geothermal Resource Areas (KGRA) in Nevada will be up for competitive sale in September. Norton made the announcement following a tour of Caithness Yankee Geothermal Plant located at Steamboat, south of Reno. "The president's national energy policy places a high priority on alternative energy development, while promoting energy conservation," Norton said. "Energy security is part of our national security. Our renewable energy such as geothermal can play an important role in helping to reduce our dependence on foreign sources of energy." Norton noted that geothermal energy has been a component of Nevada's energy sources since 1985. More federal leases are in operation in Nevada than any other state. The geothermal generation capacity for Nevada includes a total of 12 power plants. Nine of these plants use federal resources, and two are located on federal lands. Nevada's nine powerplants using federal resources have a total generation capacity of 165 megawatts, enough to supply the electrical needs of 165,000 households. "Last November, the Department of the Interior along with the Department of Energy, held an historic conference on renewable energy on public lands, said Norton. "We followed up by doubling our renewable energy budget."

RENEWABLE RESOURCES PROJECT Directions Taking Notes with Notecards Research Resources
DIRECTIONS Y ou will be researching an energy alternative and writing a report to present to the class. You will also be responsible for a project or drawing to go along with your report. I would like you to use at least 3 resources. The resources may include the science book, the Internet, and books / reference materials from the library listed below . Be sure to use your own words while writing your report. A thesaurus will help tremendously. You (and your partner if working in a group) will be researching one of the following energy alternatives:
    • Wind Energy Hydroelectric Power Water Energy (Tidal Power) Geothermal Energy Nuclear Power Solar Energy Biomass
HERE ARE A FEW TIPS TO INCLUDE IN YOUR REPORT: Who, what, when, where, why and how questions should be made up by you and answered by you. For instance, Who invented the windmill? Where was it first used? These types of questions will help to answer all about your research area. Advantages and disadvantages are also required. The report may be typed, however, a neatly written paper (in cursive) in blue or black ink is acceptable.

As of November 1999, 20,000 households had signed up for the program. This program is designed to allow consumers to encourage alternative non-polluting energy markets to create new productive enterprises to provide such renewable energy. Unocal also has proven experience in planning, designing, building and operating private power projects. The company operates three of the world's major geothermal electricity projects: Tiwi and Mak-Ban in the Philippines and Gunung Salak in Indonesia. Together, these projects have a combined installed electrical generating capacity of 1,100 megawatts. In 2000, Unocal's daily geothermal energy production averaged 16 million kilowatt-hours, or the equivalent of 25,000 barrels of oil. Net proved geothermal reserves at year-end 2000 were the equivalent of 170 million barrels of oil. ALL ABOUT UNOCAL

Summary: This fact sheet provides young scholars with an overview of renewable energy technologies. See Related Links below for more publications and Web sites on related topics, which aren't included in the PDF version. Can you imagine life without television, cars, or computers? What if you had to cook your dinner over a fire or fetch water from a river? It might be fun for a camping trip, but you probably would not want to do it every day. But that's how life was before scientists and inventors discovered ways to use energy to make our lives easier. Today, most of the energy we use comes from fossil fuels. Coal, oil, and natural gas are all fossil fuels. Over millions of years, the decay of plants, dinosaurs, and other animals was formed into fossil fuels. These fuels lie buried between layers of earth and rock. The only way to get them out is to drill or mine for them. While fossil fuels are still being created today by underground heat and pressure, they are being consumed more rapidly than they are created. For that reason, fossil fuels are considered nonrenewable ; that is, they are not replaced as soon as we use them. So, we could run out of them sometime in the future. Or, we might someday use so much fossil fuel that we won't be able to drill or mine fast enough to keep up with the demand.

    • Geothermal Energy is the development of geothermal resources for power generation and for providing heat for space heating, greenhouse cultivation, cooking, etc. Geothermal energy can effectively meet energy needs of the people. Projects earlier taken up by MNES demonstrated the applications of geothermal fluids for small-scale power generation and in poultry farming and greenhouse cultivation. With support from MNES, the Geological Survey of India is working on a comprehensive report on the assessment of geothermal resource potential for direct heat application and power generation.

    http://www.ece.umr.edu/links/power/geotherm.htm
Geothermal means "earth heat" and is as old as the world itself! Deep, deep underground, where the earth is very molten, water sometimes comes close to the hot rock and turns so hot it becomes steam. This hot water can reach temperatures of more than 300 degrees Fahrenheit. That's a lot hotter than boiling water, which boils at 212 degrees F. or 100 degress Celsius! When this hot water comes up through a crack in the earth, it's called a geyser or hot spring. Some of this hot water can be pumped up from the ground to heat buildings like a greenhouse for growing plants or even to heat homes. Special Topics Picture Gallery
