Historic RittenhouseTown Educational Tours
One of the goals of Historic RittenhouseTown is to transform this site into an educational center based on life in an early American industrial village. This is accomplished through the interactive programs of Hand Papermaking and Colonial German Cooking. Through these two programs both the industrial and domestic aspects of an early American industrial village are brought to life. Please contact the Education Coordinator by phone at (215) 843-2228 or email at edcoordinator@rittenhousetown.org to receive more information, to check on the availability of a date, or to schedule a program. Currently, Historic RittenhouseTown offers the following program options:
Historical Tour
Join us in the Visitors Center for a historic tour of RittenhouseTown. The tour opens with the acclaimed video, "The Fiber of History." Then visitors will be given the opportunity to explore the rest of the exhibits: a timeline of the History of RittenhouseTown, a working model of an eighteenth century paper mill, and an exhibit on food in an Early German American community. Visitors will then be taken on a guided tour of RittenhouseTown. This tour will include interpretation of the second mill site, the Rittenhouse Bakehouse, the Rittenhouse Homestead, and the Enoch Rittenhouse Home. Tours will be customized to the interests of the group.

German Recipes
Good German recipes haves always interested me. The foods of Germany and German cooking methods are things that I will never forget. Whenever I sampled any dishes, I would ask to speak to the chef about how it was prepared. There was usually a language problem, but I managed to get a good understanding of what went into the dish. Most of the time there is a fond memory to go along with the recipes. I remember bicycle rides along the Main River from Wurzburg in the late spring. We might ride for 50 kilometers and stop at one of the many Gast Hauses for a bratwurst and kartoffelsalat or a schnitzel and pomme frits; naturally there was a beer or two consumed. That most likely accounted for us usually taking a boat ride back, more beer on the boat too. A-a-ah, those were the days. We were just too young to appreciate them. Okay, okay, so I get carried away sometimes; but I think I'll reserve the rest of this page for more comments about German adventures. I really did learn some pretty good recipes. Here are a few.

    A TRADITIONAL GERMAN HOLIDAY MEAL
German cooking is not always easy to describe because there are numerous regional specialities and each of the yearly recurring holidays and celebrations comes with its own locally conditioned tastes and smells. Depending on ethnic tradition and family background, Christmas may come with the smell of baked apples, green branches and red and white candles, and with the sounds of church bells or jingle bells. Weeks before the feast days there may begin elaborate preparations. In the past these have involved a great amount of cooking special meats or fish and baking of breads, fancy cakes, baked apples and special cookies. Many times traditions grew out of a necessity or, in this case, of availability. In the rural days and areas, there may have been venison, if someone was lucky at hunting. If it was cold enough to butcher before Christmas there would be new pork. Butchering a hog was an important and joyous occasion, for there was the prospect of good meat to go along with the usual staple of potatoes, Spätzle (small dumplings) and kraut, and of soup (Metzelsuppe) from the broth you cooked your sausages in. It was also a great occasion for socializing. Butchering required much preparation ahead of time and a lot of work on " Schlachttag ," especially with the cutting up and cleaning of the guts. So you had relatives or friends and neighbors who would come and help.
