Description
Surround yourself with the music of Ghana, and study its central role in the cultural traditions of this exciting West African nation. Known for its friendly people and tropical beauty, Ghana provides an ideal setting for exploring rich and diverse cultural traditions through music. By observing and interacting with local musicians in the capital, Accra, and a small village outside Accra, this course provides the chance to experience and learn about another culture. Led by Professor Akosua Addo, Department of Music, this course examines the musical and cultural traditions of Ghana through lectures, field trips, and discussions with local musicians. This program is ideal for students interested in music, anthropology, African studies, and cultural studies. Curriculum
FoSt 3040: Music and Culture in Ghana . A predeparture class meeting and reading help ensure that students can more easily adjust to Ghanian culture, and are academically prepared for the in-country coursework. Assignments in Ghana consist of readings, field observations, discussions, journal writing, and papers. This course will be submitted for Liberal Education evaluation. Credits: 3 for May Session.

1. Ghana in Maltese Culture and Society
Throughout the years, both ghana (as a genre) and the role of the ghannejja in Maltese culture and society have frequently been presented by both Maltese and foreign scholars as representatives of old time Maltese peasant life, as the sweetness of The Folk ( il-hlewwa tal-poplu ) and 'of a way of life that was rapidly disappearing with post-war economic development' (Fsadni 1992: 32). In this framework, ghana becomes one of the elements that characterize the simple (if not also romantic) life of the working class. Aquilina (1931: 8), for instance, provides the following description: How lovely it is, to hear from a remote and abandoned village amidst our island's hills, during a moonlit evening, while the cricket is hidden among the tomato plants, breaking the evening's silence, a handsome and healthy young man, swarthy as our country makes him, singing his ghana ceaselessly. His soul would seemingly burst open with his singing! [My translation]

The typical student in Ghana has twelve years of education before entering college and spends approximately four years completing the bachelor's degree. Only about ten percent of the country's students gain access to one of Ghana's four universities. Undergraduate education is very significant in Ghana since most professional jobs require a college degree and, therefore, securing enrollment in the university is crucial to professional advancement. Many more Ghanaian students would like to attend than can be accepted by the small number of universities. UC students should understand that because they have obtained places that might have gone to local students, they must take their studies seriously and act responsibly so as not to be viewed as misusing rare educational opportunities and the university's scarce resources. Ghanaian university students are about the same age as UC students but because they come from a more traditional society and have attended boarding schools for their secondary education, they are generally more conservative, more respectful of authority, and may appear less open to new foreign friends. They tend to form friendships with those who come from the same area of the country or who went to the same schools as they did.

T he republic of Ghana, derives its name from the ancient Ghana Empire in the Western Sudan which fell in the 11th century. Ghana is the first black African colony to gain independence and until independence from the British colonial rule on March 6, 1957, Ghana was known as the Gold Coast. The Portuguese were the first Europeans to arrive and others came later. The remnants of around 30 castles can be seen along the coast of Ghana. The castles bear witness to four centuries of the presence of Europeans trading in ivory, gold, and slaves. At the height of the slave trade, there were more than 60 strongholds along the coast which is a mere 350 miles long. These castles were built by the Dutch, Prussians, French, and British. Many of them changed hands.
The capital of Ghana was moved from Cape Coast to Accra by the British in 1876. See independence square at Accra Ghana.

    Kente Cloth
Kente is an Asante ceremonial cloth hand-woven on a horizontal treadle loom. Strips measuring about 4 inches wide are sewn together into larger pieces of cloths. In a total cultural context, kente is more important than just a cloth. It is a visual representation of history, philosophy, ethics, oral literature, moral values, social code of conduct, religious beliefs, political thought and aesthetic principles.
www.erols.com Meanings of Symbols in Adinkra Cloth The production and use of Adinkra are associated with the Asante people than any other group of people. Around the 19th Century, the Asante people developed their unique art of adinkra printing. Adinkra cloths were made and used exclusively by the royalty and spiritual leaders for very important sacred ceremonies and rituals.
