I. DESCRIPTION:
Body length is 44-63 cm (just under three feet). Average weight is 5.5 kg (14 pounds). Males and females are similar. Color is variable. In Thailand there are two colors, not related to sex- very dark brown (black) or light buff. They all have a pronounced and complete white face ring, white hands and feet. Male song is simple with quaver-hoots, female song is longer, rising to climax, about 18 seconds long. (Populations from N. Sumatra: brown/red/buff, song 17 seconds long.) Fur is extremely dense, providing protection from rain. One square centimeter of skin has over 2,000 individual hairs (13,125 per sq. in.) compared to 900 hairs per sq. cm. for Old World monkeys. Arms are very long , fingers are long and hook-like, and thumbs are thin and somewhat reduced. No tail. Ischial callosities are present.

SPECIAL REPORTS Investor's Centre Outsourcing Special NI_AD('BottomLeft'); Mick Hume November 25, 2002 The shoddy sentiment that puts Courtney the gibbon above human health mick hume It is entirely moral, humane and proper to place electrodes in the brains of primates, as part of the search for a cure for such terrible diseases as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. What is really sick is that so many seem to doubt it. This week a public inquiry opens into Cambridge University’s plans to build a world-class, £24 million research centre, where neuroscientist will experiment on the brains of primates. Two previous applications for approval for the institute have been turned down on spurious, non-scientific grounds, after complaints that it would infringe green belt planning regulations and endanger public order by provoking animal rights protests. Whatever the outcome of the new hearing, it is a disgrace that the Government feels the need to hold a public inquiry into whether we should privilege people or primates. The agenda on the animal research issue seems increasingly to be set by the lobby group Friends of the Planet of the Apes.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ARUN RANGSI! One very special gibbon at the International Primate Protection League is called Arun Rangsi (a Thai name which means The Rising Sun of Dawn). Arun Rangsi was once a laboratory research animal, but now lives a happy life at the IPPL sanctuary in Summerville, S.C. with his gibbon friend Shanti. On August 9, 1999 Arun Rangsi was 20 years old. Practice drawing your gibbons, and show Arun Rangsi how much we care about him. STEP 1 Two circles, like a pair of glasses. STEP 2
Add two more circles inside the first ones. Color the inside circles in, leaving a white spot, called a highlight. These inside circles are the eyes. STEP 3
Draw a circle (about twice as big as the first circles you did), but don't finish it, starting at the bottom part of the "glasses" on the left side to the bottom left part of the "glasses" on the right side. STEP 4
Add the nose (a V) and the mouth, just a curved line. Don't put your nose too high up, but pretty close to the mouth.

MORE GIBBONS Now that you can do a neat gibbon face, here are two more ideas of how to draw one. Similar to "chimp in the grass," our gibbon is hiding behind a bunch of leaves. The drawing on the bottom is a really nice pose on a tree. The gibbon can be drawn in the middle of the tree branch. Note how the the gibbon makes himself comfy on the branch, curling his feet and hands together, the same as you would if you were curling up on a chair reading a book. Order: Primates
Suborder: Haplorhini Infraorder: Catarrhini Family: Hylobatidae Physical Description The six species of gibbons are classified, referring to their size, as lesser apes. They exhibit many of the general characteristics of primates: flat faces, stereoscopic vision, enlarged brain size, grasping hands and feet, and opposable digits; and many specific characteristics of apes: broad chest, full shoulder rotation, no tail, and arms longer than legs. Gibbons do not build nests like the great apes. They sleep sitting up with their arms wrapped around their knees and their head tucked into their lap. They have ischial callosities (fleshy, nerveless pads attached to the hipbones, a characteristic otherwise found only in Old World monkeys).
