In Post Captain , Captain Aubrey takes temporary command of H.M.S. Lively. On deck for the first time he is taken aback by calls from the rigging, which at first he first mistakes for a boy, but then is told they come from a “Java Ape”. This is a gibbon - a siamang ( Hylobates syndactylus , aver. wgt. 23 lbs.) – one of the species of gibbon and one that is very vocal, like the one on the Lively. Gibbons are lessor apes, distantly related to humans, who are great apes. You can see they are smaller with longer arms, adapted to spend most of their life in the treetops. They brachiate (travel arm over arm swinging from the branches) and do not jump from branch to branch, as do smaller primates. They form nuclear families, with the parents mated for life and the young raised by both parents. Gibbons are omnivorous, eating foods found in the forest canopy: leaves, fruit, seeds, insects, eggs, birds, etc. But the doctor and the Captain also had to content with another ape on the Lively, at least part of one.

The white-cheeked gibbon or otherwise known as the black gibbon is a very acrobatic animal living in the treetops of South East Asia. This ape is the smallest of the lesser apes which also includes chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans. The gibbon is rather a unique primate. The white-cheeked gibbon belongs to the kingdom Animalia .(1) To be in the kingdom Animalia you must be multicellular, to be multicellular you must have more than one cell. The amoeba is an example of unicellular organism. To be unicellular, you only have one cell. Also to be in the kingdom Animalia, the animal must be heterotrophic. To be heterotrophic you cannot make your own food.(2) Plants on the other hand, make their own food by photosynthesis so they are called autotrophic(2). Photosynthesis is the process by which the plant cells make carbohydrates from carbon dioxide and water with the help of chlorophyll and light that combine together.(3) And the final characteristic to be Animalia is to have cell membranes with no cell walls, the thin membrane that forms the outer surface of the living part of the cell.(2) The phylum the white-cheeked gibbon is in is Chordata The gibbon is included in the class Mammalia White-cheeked gibbon are placed in the order of Primates . To be classified as a primate they must have these characteristics: shortened rostrum, a snout or looks like a beak; forwardly directed orbits; a hallux, (the big toe(3)); a pollex, (thumb(3)); highly mobile radius; forelimb; tibia, inner and thickest bone of the leg; fibula, which is the outer and thinner bone in the foreleg in the hind; ulna in the forelimb; have a clavicle, which is the collarbone; first toe with a nail; stomach; incisors (teeth); canines, sometimes present, premolars; hypocone; and arboreal which means away from the mouth.(6)

Gibbon
Gibbons are small anthropoid apes found in the forests of India, Indochina, and the Malay Archipelago. Gibbons are slender animals with small, round heads; soft, woolly fur; and very long arms. They are the only anthropoid apes to walk on the hind limbs only. Gibbons are monogamous; the young, born singly, remain with the family group until they are five or six years old. The animals are omnivores. About nine species of gibbons exist, including the silvery gibbon (pictured), the white-handed gibbon, and the siamang which is the largest gibbon.
Gibbon populations have been severely reduced due to hunting and deforestation.
Howler Monkey
Certain monkeys found in Central and South America, known for their characteristic roar. The howler is the largest and heaviest of American monkeys. The black face is bearded with long black hair. Howlers are covered with thick fur except for the underside of the last third of the prehensile tail. They live in trees in groups and feed mainly on leaves and fruit. The best-known species is the red howler

Golden Haired Monkey Rhinopithecus roxellanae roxellanae
One of China's rarest indigenous animals, the golden haired monkey is found in Sichuan, Shaanxi, Gansu and Hubei provinces. It lives in dense high mountain forests living on a diet of young leaves, twigs and fruit. The golden haired monkey is classified as a vulnerable threatened species by the World Conservation Union.
Golden Haired Monkey Rhinopithecus roxellanae brelichi
With diets and behaviour similar to the other golden haired monkey, this variety is only found in the north of Guizhou province.
Black Gibbon Hylobates concolor ) left / White Browed Gibbon Hylobates hoolock ) right
Mainly found in Guangdong and Yunnan provinces, these tree dwelling gibbons feed on insects, fruit and birds' eggs. They are one of the primates capable of walking on two feet. The black gibbon is classified as an endangered species by the World Conservation Union.
Francois' Monkey Presbytis francoisi
A fruit eating monkey with a largely tree-dwelling existence, the Francois' monkey is found in tropical or subtropical broadleaf forests in Yunnan province and south Guangxi autonomous region.

There are eleven species of gibbon, two of which, the Siamang ( Hylobates syndactylus ) and the Moloch Gibbon ( Hylobates moloch ), are kept at Howletts. Gibbons are natives of South-east Asia, from Assam to Indonesia, and are all endangered by the steady destruction of their rain forest habitat. Gibbons live in monogamous family groups; when the offspring reach maturity they normally leave their parents and form new pairs to start families of their own. Males and females are about the same size, though in some species (but not the two at Howletts) they can differ strikingly in colour. Home About Us Webcams Conservation ... Others

In fact, the elders often ask her advice on important monkey matters. As they say in China, “He who asks is a fool for a minute, but he who does not ask is a fool forever.” Zi is a white handed gibbon. Gibbons are the smallest and most agile of the apes. They spend much of their time in the trees. No wonder. Gibbons have very long arms, which they use to swing from branch to branch. This makes traveling through dense forests much easier.
