The American Studies programme aims to introduce students to a diverse range of themes and approaches relating to the history, culture and contemporary character of the United States. The programme is both multi- and interdisciplinary in its intent. All students have the opportunity to pursue their disciplinary interests – in history, literature, politics, geography, and popular culture – whilst at the same time being encouraged to explore the intellectual links between them. This is achieved through the choice of second and third year modules and also through a number of core modules designed to investigate American society and culture as a whole. Year One: In the first year all students take a common introductory course, which consists of the following: Introduction to American Studies I and II, which provide a basic grounding in American historical development from the colonial period to the present day; American Literature, which introduces students both to key authors, from Nathaniel Hawthorne to Toni Morrison, and to some of the recurrent issues of America’s literary culture; and American Government and Politics, which examines the political system and includes study of institutions such as the Presidency, Congress and the Supreme Court.

Introduction to Principal Honours
Structure and Rationale The American Studies Honours programme aims to introduce students to a diverse range of themes and approaches relating to the history, culture and contemporary character of the United States. The programme is both multi- and interdisciplinary in its intent. All students have the opportunity to pursue their disciplinary interests - in history, literature, politics, geography, and popular culture - while at the same time being encouraged to explore the intellectual links between them. This is achieved through students' choice of second and third year modules and through a number of core modules designed to investigate American society and culture as a whole. The Honours programme proceeds through various levels of specialisation, beginning with introductory work in the first year and culminating in advanced specialist modules and a dissertation in the third. Assessment is continuous, with Level I a qualifying year and Levels II and III counting towards the final degree. Level I Students are introduced to American Studies by means of a first year course that establishes the groundwork for the more detailed study during the second and third Honours years. All students take a common introductory course, which consists of the following:

Book Information About the book Reviews Knights Unhorsed
Internal Conflict in a Gilded Age Social Movement
Robert E. Weir In 1869, the Knights of Labor began as a fraternal and labor organization in Philadelphia with a platform embracing everything from abolition of the wage system to the establishment of cooperative enterprises and social harmony. Seventeen years later, representing more than three-quarters of a million workers, the Knights of Labor rapidly declined and officially disbanded in 1917. For many decades historians have treated the Knights of Labor as an appendage to history, an organization that showed brief promise, then collapsed, leaving the better adapted American Federation of Labor to carry labor's torch. Knights Unhorsed examines the internal conflict and external pressures that drove one of America's most promising labor organizations into obscurity less than a half a century later. Weir draws upon numerous sociological case studies, newspapers, pamphlets, organizational records, and scrapbooks to reconstruct the history of the Knights of Labor. Knights Unhorsed $39.95s cloth / ISBN 0-8143-2873-3
