Girl Guides 85 This compact series started in 1970, featuring Cubs & Scouts. A little later, Brownies were added and as a seeming afterthought, Girl Guides in 1985. The "boys" side of things were written by David Harwood and illustrated by John Berry. They covered the history and the movements from Baden-Powell's days through to modern times. The revised 1980 Cubs book featured a gloss cover, an updated page of proficiency badges and a colour preface illustration and had been subsumed under the "Hobbies" spine series. The Scouts book paints an exciting life, and accurate, if my memory serves! Our little chaps are pictured sailing, swimming, fishing, caving, climbing and go-karting. The cover is another self-referential item, with the scouts closely studying the "Ladybird Book of Trees". An exciting rock/n/roll band is featured on page 20.... Brownie Guides, written by Nancy Scott and illustrated by Bernard Robinson, Eric Winter & John Moyes, featured a (matt) photographic cover and had lost the classic "page of text, page of artwork" format. The artwork is mostly photographs, taken by Moyes, who worked on 19 other Ladybirds, mostly in the "Learnabout" series. Scott had produced a small but impressive list of other books, including The Seashore, Pond Life, Understanding Maps, Horses & Dogs.

The hospital had it’s own scouts and brownies groups founded in 1927 they were an essential part of hospital life and contributed to the well being of the young patients and also raised the profile of the hospital through various events and press stories.
    Children’s Corner By Auntie Pat
    25th February
At Heatherwood Hospital, Ascot, children are given their lessons whilst lying in bed. This group of children were photographed last week while they were out on the veranda of the hospital in the warm sun. At the school they are taught every lesson from art to Geography. An important part of their lessons is handwork because by doing this kind of work they help themselves to get better more quickly. Most children would envy their short hours in school 9-30 to 11.30 in the morning and 1.30 to 3.30 in the afternoon. But when these lessons are over they cannot run home from school – instead they have to stay in their beds until they go to sleep. Don’t think that this makes them unhappy. Although they must miss this more than anything they keep cheerful by occupying their own minds with reading, model making the wireless and plenty of fun among themselves. Windsor Express 1949

KLONDIKE DERBY RULES: The following rules apply to all teams .Youth participating in either event must be a registered member of Scouts Canada or Girl Guides of Canada.
    2. Each team must have all the equipment listed.
3 Scores will be based on the number of nuggets earned, and the total time on the course. Allowance is made for any time lost waiting for a task to be assigned.
    4. The judgement of the Klondike mayors is final.
    5. The lunch stop will be a minimum of one (1) hour . It is important that the team has a substantial hot meal . Leaders must make sure that the team has it's own food. Be sure to include lots of liquid for drinking as the participants may dehydrate on the trail. There is no water available at Camp Amisk .
    6. Only members of the team will assist in the task assigned. Others who help the team will cause the team to lose points. GIVE THE KIDS A CHANCE to work on their own.
    7. Teams consist of eight (8) members. A lesser number is allowed subject to a small penalty. Teams of 5 to 8 are viable.
    9. SCORING: Points are awarded according to the total number of "nuggets" earned, and to the time taken to complete the course. It is usually to your advantage to earn nuggets rather than to finish the course quickly.

1st Hellenic Scout Group Visit by the Scouts of Greece ( Please note this page contains photographs so it may take some time to download) On Sunday, 25th July 1999, we had the pleasure of hosting a luncheon for some extremely important guests. They were on their way to the 35th World Scout Conference being held in Durban however they decided to come to South Africa a day earlier. In this way they strengthened the ties of the local Greek Scouts with the Scouts of Greece. Our District Commissioner, Chris Maniakis, met our guests and they were able to visit the 34th Hellenic Scouts who are based in Pretoria. On arrival at 1st Hellenic, Group Scouter, Gregory Valassopoulus met our guests and they were introduced to other distinguished guests. At the luncheon, the DC Chris Maniakis accepted a framed print on one of Lord Baden-Powell's paintings whilst another was presented to Gerard Evans, Assistant Area Commissioner - Scout programs for the Gauteng Area. Each Hellenic Scout Group was presented with the Scouts of Greece flags as well as a flag as used at the last Greek Jamboree.

Last-Modified: 17 May 1998 King Edward and the Boy Scouts KING EDWARD AND THE BOY SCOUTS After writing my book, Scouting for Boys, I naturally thought that boys' organisations would use it for their work and there would be little more for me to do in the matter. But before very long, in the spring of 1909, I realised that quite outside such organisations, hundreds of boys were forming Scout Troops on their own. So I made up my mind and pushed. This was a bit of a bombshell for me. I saw that I could not do both soldiering and Scouting. I must drop one or the other. But which? From the personal point of view, I was fifty-two and a lieutenant-general, and therefore high up in the professional ladder for my age: at the same time it would be a pity to let this new growth falter and fade, and yet I could see no one who could or would take it in hand just then. As I have said, the King questioned me on this point and knowing that he had fully grasped the idea I put myself in his hands to say which course I should take. Eventually be agreed that the Scout experiment was the more important.

Last-Modified: 17 May 1998 I NOW started on my second life in this world. I had definitely left the Army in 1910. I was now settling down to be a good citizen as a Warden of the Mercers' Company (N.B.-A Mercer, like a poet, is born such, he is not made); and the Boy Scout movement had started itself and was finding its feet far and wide. This, though it promised to be the biggest job of my life, was at the same time the easiest since everybody connected with it met me more than half-way with their keenness. In 1912 all was going smoothly and well when out of the blue an entirely new kind of bomb suddenly caught me in the midriff! DOUBLE HARNESS It was in this way. During my first life I had had my time fairly fully occupied, with little leisure for thinking of such extraneous matters as marriage; indeed, I had been railed by my best friend, "Ginger" Gordon, 15th Hussars, on being a confirmed old bachelor; and when I said that I had no desire to get married and I felt sure that nobody would desire to marry me, he looked at me quizzically for a space and then remarked, with the laugh of one who knew: "You'll get it in the neck one day when you least expect it. Old boy!" And I did.

The Parish Church Of St Andrew's, Burgess Hill
7th Burgess Hill Scouts, 8th Burgess Hill Brownies and Girl Guides. During school term times, there are four boys groups that meet, depending upon age. Beavers for the 6 to 8 year olds,
Cubs for the 8 1/2 to 10 year olds,
Scouts for the 10 1/2 to 15 1/2 year olds and
Ventures for 15 1/2 to 20 year olds. There is an annual fee, plus weekly 'subs' and a uniform is required. The guide association began in 1910 and is a world wide organisation. Guides are encouraged to explore and discover the wider world. There are Rainbows (ages 5-7) Brownies (aged 7-10) and Guides (aged 10-15) at St Andrews all led by qualified leaders who regularly attend training sessions. The units have full programmes learning to work together, learning new skills, making friends and helping others. The brownies go on pack holiday and the guides have an annual camp. They meet during school term times only. There are weekly subs plus annual Guiding Association subs and a uniform is required. A waiting list is held by the parish office for Rainbows.
