Bob Labbance October 1998 Home About Turf Free Subscription Advertising ... Links to Advertisers Although golf has been played in North America since the mid-1600s, the oldest continuously operated golf club in the United States is Saint Andrew's, located just a few miles north of Yonkers, Nwe York. The club was founded on November 14, 1888, taking its name from Scotland's Royal and Ancient Golf Club at St. Andrews, and play began on a six-hole course located at 480 North Broadway in Yonkers. The club moved four times before settling into its current home in Mount Hope, N.Y., during the spring of 1897. Though many clubs were instituted between 1888 and 1897, few still play on the original grounds, making this site one of the oldest golfing grounds in use in America. Members are proud of the longevity of their establishment and a rich and deep body of memorabilia and records are carefully guarded and appreciated by historian Peter Landau. As an American hallmark, Saint Andrew's has also led the way in greenkeeping, and the preparation of the course for inter-club and national amateur events has been closely watched by superintendents for a century. The club hosted the first, and as yet unofficial U.S. Amateur in 1894. Hopes are that another such event will visit the site sometime in the next ten years. Jay Reagan, CGCS, is the current superintendent comfortable in his surroundings after seven seasons on the job graduating from the PGA Tour stable of course managers after a five-year stint at the TPC at River Highlands in Connecticut. Reagan appreciates his place at this American golf legend. "I feel honored knowing the history," notes Reagan. "There have only been a handful of superintendents ever here. They've kept people on for a long time."

"Golf is an exercise which is much used by the Gentlemen in Scotland. A large common, in which there are several little holes, is chosen for the purpose. It is played with little leather balls stuffed with feathers, and sticks tipped with horn. He who putts with the fewest strokes gets the game...A man would live ten years the longer for using this exercise once or twice a week."

GOLF BEGININGS
Golf is a game in which the player attempts to propel a small, resilient ball with clubs around a course, consisting of widely spaced holes, in regular progression and with the smallest number of strokes. A typical golf course is either 9 or 18 holes. There are several sports that hit a ball with a club or stick, but golf has three factors that make it a unique sport. First, it is played over large areas of land, rather than a prepared surface of specified size and shape, no two courses are exactly the same. Secondly, the objective of the game is to get the ball into a hole with the fewest number of strokes. Thirdly, an opponent has no influence over a rival's play, only over his own score.
Scotland is considered the birthplace of golf. Rabbit runs proved to be ideal fairways for early golfers. Rabbits linked their burrows in the dunes by means of runs, foxes and hunters expanded the runs. Golf began as a haphazard sport of hitting a pebble or roundish object with a stick or club into a hole.

Palmer, Player, Nicklaus, Watson, Faldo and Woods. PRE 1400: THE ORIGINS OF THE GAME Throughout recorded history, every civilisation has played a game with a club and a ball. Pangea for example, as described by Roman scribes, would appear to be the father both of modern hockey and the Celtic games of Shinty and Hurling. In one form or another, the variant games of present day golf were clearly enjoyed throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. The game persisted over the centuries and the form that it took and rules that were applied varied as widely as the terrain the game was played over. In short, the game consisted of knocking a ball from one pre-designated place to another where the ball was to be struck off a predetermined object in the least number of blows. Games often extended from village to village.

Roman emperors apparently played a relaxing game called paganica, using a bent stick to drive a soft, feather-stuffed ball. Over the next 5 centuries the game developed on several continents and eventually evolved into the popular Scottish game known as golfe. Various European countries had games resembling paganicacambuca in England, jeu de mail in France, and in the Netherlands het kolven, which was played in the American colonies as early as 1657. The Scottish game, however, is the direct ancestor of the modern game. The first formal golf club, the Company of Gentlemen Golfers, now the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, was established in Edinburgh in 1744. It codified the first set of rules, which helped eliminate local variations in play. The Royal and Ancient Golf Club, established 10 years later at St. Andrews, Scotland, became the official ruling organization of the sport. Its rules committee, along with the United States Golf Association, still governs the sport. Among the major men's tournaments are the Masters, the U.S. Open, the British Open, and the PGA. Women golfers have their own tour, sponsored by the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA), the governing body for about 600 women professionals. Their four major tournaments are in the LPGA, the U.S. Women's Open, the duMaurier Classic in Canada, and the Nabisco Dinah Shore tournament.

The sport of men's golf has been a staple in Indiana University athletics. The Hoosiers began competing in the 1920s and made their first appearance at the Big Ten Championships in 1922. Success has followed the Hoosiers over the course of the last 80 years and IU's tradition in men's golf is as prestigious as any Big Ten school.
"Having grown up in Evansville, it was a life-long dream to attend Indiana University. The important thing, upon visiting the campus and meeting Coach Bob Fitch, was the emphasis he placed on meeting academic standards.
"The term 'student-athlete' meant just thata student first and an athlete second. I learned much more at Indiana University than merely marketing, my major. Coach Fitch impressed upon the team life's most important values: Honesty, Integrity, and Honor, all vitally important.

The Hoosiers have been a dominant force in the Big Ten since the conference's first official championship tournament in 1982. That first year Indiana finished seventh, but since then has finished lower than third just twice. The Hoosiers have won seven Big Ten crowns, second in the conference to Ohio State's eight. In fact, the Hoosiers have placed either first or second in 12 of the last 14 championships and have finished in the top three an amazing 18 of 21 years.
"I really loved Indiana University's campus when I visited IU. I met coach Carmichael and I really liked him and felt he would make me the player I wanted to be. I've always dreamed of playing professionally, and without coach Carmichael, I wouldn't be where I am today. He is the greatest golf coach ever and I cannot say enough good things about him. He is in my mind, without a doubt, the best golf coach ever. While at Indiana, coach spent so much time with me while I was playing. He dedicated himself to make sure that I became the best student, the best athlete, and the best person that I could be. My time at Indiana included some of the best memories I have and if I had it all to do over again I would not change a thing."

In 1982, Ely Callaway founded the Company that became Callaway Golf. First called Callaway Hickory Stick USA, Inc., the Company specialized in hickory-shafted putters and wedges that were "Demonstrably Superior and Pleasingly Different." In 1988, the Company introduced a new set of irons with a revolutionary clubhead design called S2H2 - Short, Straight, Hollow Hosel. This design combined a cavity back iron with perimeter weighting, a progressive offset and a bore-through shaft with an innovative shortened hosel that moved weight from the hosel to the club's effective hitting area. The same year, the Company's name was changed to Callaway Golf Company. The following year, S2H2 Metal Woods were introduced. These were traditional-sized, stainless steel clubs with a radical new four-faceted sole design. Essentially all of the hosel was removed from the S2H2 Metal Woods, freeing up weight that could be used more effectively elsewhere in the club. Both the S2H2 Irons and Woods were offered with steel or graphite shafts instead of the heavier hickory shafts. By the end of 1990, the S2H2 Driver was No. 1 on the Senior PGA Tour. Year-end sales reached $21.5 million. Callaway Golf Company entered the 1990s with a new line of oversized metal woods that would revolutionize the golf industry. Named after the World War I cannon, the Big Bertha Metal Woods combined the S2H2 design with an oversized head. The result was a golf club that helped golfers obtain straighter shots on off-center hits. Sales in 1991 reached $54.7 million. By the end of the 1992 golf season, Big Bertha Drivers were No. 1 on the Senior PGA, the LPGA and the Nike (then Hogan) tours. Year-end sales more than doubled to $132 million.

History
Gort Golf Club
, founded in 1924, and originally known as the Rockfield Club, spent its first 50 years on its home off the Galway Road. However, from the beginning, the annual winter flooding reduced the golf course to a veritable lake for up to six months each year causing much upset to the members.
F inally in 1974/75, under the captaincy of the late Bob Forde and Gerry Cahill, the Club decided to move to a new location at Laughtyshaughnessy, where members could enjoy their golf in all seasons. However, it soon became clear that the 30 acre site could not properly accommodate the growing membership, and thus during the late 1980's and early 1990's successive committees searched long and hard for a more suitable location.
T he current site, purchased from the Finnegan and Fleming families at Castlequarter, has an interesting history. It is recorded that one "Nehemias Follane, in respect of his travaile and pains taken for Her Majesty (Elizabeth I) - shall have 2 quarters (240 acres) in the New Toune, in the Barony of Kiltaraghe" (Kiltartan). The castle, built by the above Nehemias Follane, still stands on the property adjoining the course. It is also an area of outstanding beauty, overlooking the Slieve Aughty mountains and the woods of Coole on one side and on the other the Clare Hills, and the world famous Burren.
I n the early 1980's, Christy O' Connor Jnr and his family came to live in the parish of Gort. The people of the area were pleased and proud that the considerable upturn in Christy's golfing career happily coincided with his arrival in South Galway. He was made an Honorary Life Member of the Club in 1985 following his breaking of Henry Cotton's 50 year old record at Sandwich in the British Open where he finished third to Sandy Lyle. The links he has forged with Gort Golf Club are strong indeed, as was evidenced when some 20 members of the Club travelled to the Belfry to witness his great triumph over Fred Couples in the 1989 Ryder Cup.
