Maryland—An Overview
Maryland is a diverse state ranging from the Atlantic beaches to the Appalachian Mountains; from the rolling hills of the northern Piedmont to the tidewater region of the Chesapeake Bay. Its history is reflected in its communities, both large and small. Baltimore, for example, is an industrial and transportation hub that includes outstanding universities, medical facilities, and numerous tourist attractions. The suburbs of Washington, DC, are characterized by bedroom communities and high-technology development. Three of every four Maryland citizens live in the geographic corridor linking these two cities. Smaller cities and towns feature a slower-paced, rural lifestyle, although they, like their urban counterparts, are no stranger to the ills of poverty, illiteracy, and unemployment. Strategies for strengthening strong communities and revitalizing weaker ones are essential to the continued quality of life of residents throughout the state. The Chesapeake Bay—the largest estuary in the United States—defines Maryland’s interface with the natural environment. The quality of recreational opportunities and the quantity and quality of crab, oyster, and rockfish harvests are of concern to most state residents. The bay, however, is under siege from the pressures of an increasing population. Public decision-makers, educators, and local citizens face the challenge of trying to understand and successfully manage land-use changes resulting from this population growth.

TRAVELSMART AND YOUR LOCAL GOVERNMENT
By lowering our reliance on cars through greater use of public transport, cycling and walking, we can reduce traffic congestion and road trauma while improving air quality and health. Car use in the Perth Metropolitan Region is one of the highest by world standards - we make 63 per cent of all our personal trips by car as the driver. TravelSmart TravelSmart has already produced some spectacular results! It is a successful, innovative travel behaviour change program that is:
  • suitable for all Perth local governments; proven and sustainable (reducing car trips by as much as 14%);

The quality of the air we breathe and traffic congestion on our roads affects us all. Whatever your interest, or whatever community group you are involved in, there are many opportunities to reduce the use of private cars. While there is a lot you can do as an individual, community groups can make a really big impact. Here are a few simple examples:
  • Sports club members could arrange to pool cars when travelling to games/matches.

A webquest is a collaborative online activity for the collection and organization of large amounts of information and anecdotes about a given conflict. Webquests can be used effectively in conflict management studies to educate students as to the factual and rhetorical elements of those conflicts. Generally, conflicts are divided into several points of view (POV) relative to the actors implicated. Students or participants role play to adopt one of these points of view. Their job is to find all relevant information on their adopted points of view by exhaustively searching the Web and crafting a position statement based on the information collected. The collection of these position statements can then be used for many different academic, social or political applications.
Here are a few links to some webquest examples:
Now, here is your webquest:
The Israeli - Palestinian Conflict
The conflict between Israel and Palestine is a longstanding and highly publicized dispute. Israelis, Palestinians, and world leaders have struggled to find a long-term solution to end centuries of violence. Your webquest is to investigate this conflict from one of four points-of-view and report your findings back to the larger group by constructing a position statement based on questions posed to the position you choose:

ARTICLES CONCEPTUALISING THE DYNAMICS OF GLOBALISATION AND CULTURE IN ELECTRONIC COMMERCE AUTHORS: MELISSA COLE and ROBERT M. O’KEEFE of Brunel University, UK. ABSTRACT: Electronic commerce implies global reach, increased connectivity and interdependence, and technological advancement across cultural boundaries. Development of these aspects, however, has not occurred in an even manner. Online consumers, at different levels of technical maturity and cultural homogeneity, interact to create new cultural forms or "zones". These zones occur simultaneously in different directions, with different densities and at different speeds with largely unpredictable consequences. This paper produces a unique framework based upon this concept. We use this to understand the actions of the online consumer, analyse some previous thinking on EC, and develop some potential business responses to this concept.

One of the principal objectives of the PMI course is to increase awareness of relevant political, organizational, and behavioral concepts useful in the analysis of national security cases. An example of such a case was the Reagan administration’s responses to the growing violence in Lebanon. To dampen this conflict, and increase the chances for an overall Arab-Israeli peace settlement in the Middle East, the Reagan administration actively employed the diplomatic and military resources of the United States Government during 1981-83, but was unable to control events in Lebanon. When American military forces were withdrawn in February 1984, many wondered how the Reagan administration had become so deeply involved in the Lebanon crisis. B. Objectives Explain a complex national security case using the input-output model. Describe the major factors that influenced the decision(s) in this case.

PROCESS EVALUATION PROJECT:
Preliminary Findings
October 1, 1995
Center for World Indigenous Studies
Principal Investigator: Rudolph C. Ryser
The Center For World Indigenous Studies released the Final Report usaoffice@cwis.org online order form
Executive Summary Thirty three Indian governments have engaged in negotiations and concluded at least one and sometimes two Compacts of Self-Government with the United States between 1990 and 1995. The principles guiding the original negotiation of these compacts originally defined by Indian leaders in 1986 and 1987 emphasized the establishment of a government-to-government framework with the United States on a tribe-by-tribe basis. Emphasis was placed on the importance of these agreements being between each Indian government and the United States government as a whole instead of Indian governments dealing with agencies. The goals for self-government were based in these original principles, but there was a separation between principles and goals. Two studies have been conducted to serve as annual self-governance assessments. The first study in 1993 emphasized Indian government compliance with compacts and the effectiveness of accounting and budgetary systems. The second study (1994, 1995) emphasized "costs and benefit," depending on a series of questionnaires to get opinions from Indian governments and officials of the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Office of Self-Governance. This study was generally approving of the creative and effective activities of Indian governments and critical of the United States government's compliance with Congressional and Compact terms and requirements.
