naltcila velski be le lojbo gerna sidbo This overview of Lojban will hopefully give you a good feel for the design and scope of the language. It serves as an introduction to learning the language; most of the special terminology used elsewhere is defined here. This overview is not complete, nor detailed; much is glossed over. To actually learn the language you must study the available reference or teaching materials. The material following is divided up into the major facets of language description. These are:
Orthography
the way the language is written
Phonology
the way the language sounds
Morphology
the structure of words
Semantics
the meanings of words, sentences, and expressions
Grammar
the ways in which words may be put together
For many special terms, we will give a definition, and then the Lojban word for the concept. The Lojban words are then used, to avoid confusion due to the various meanings of the English jargon words. The Lojban words are also what is used in other publications about the language.
Orthography
Lojban uses the Roman alphabet, consisting of the following letters and symbols:

First Grade
First grade has an intensive phonics program in which students practice phonetic combinations daily and learn to "sound out" words. Reading groups meet twice a day, and students have eight reading books which progress in difficulty. Students learn fundamentals of language, such as sentence structure, punctuation, spelling, prefixes, suffixes, contractions, and compound words. They are taught cursive penmanship.

Once there, you would lay claim to an entire table so you could lay out encyclopedias, dictionaries, English books to help with punctuation and sentence structure. Now, term papers and writing assignments are as easy as turning on your computer. With a good word processor and a connection to the Internet, an A on your homework or a job promotion for your presentation is only a keystroke away. T he Internet can be a wonderful source of information for anyone who is looking for help with English or in writing letters, stories or essays. Of course, the best idea is to go straight to a search engine such as Infoseek, Yahoo or Alta Vista for help. A large number of the sites related to grammar are linked to each other. Everything is available on the Internet; grammar rules and examples of each; colleges that contain lessons and tests; explanations of punctuation rules and sites that merely 'talk' about the English language and the rules governing it. There are even sites that have all of the above. I have attempted to find a large sampling of the previously mentioned web sites that deal with grammar, punctuation, and writing.

Americans have three names: a first name, a middle name, and a last name (or surname). For example: Marilyn Sue Ellis or Edward David Orleans. Some people use an initial when they sign their names: Marilyn S. Ellis, Edward D. Orleans. Not everyone has a middle name.
American women change their last names when they get married. For example, if Marilyn Ellis marries Edward Orleans, her name becomes Marilyn Orleans. Not all women follow this custom. a woman keeps her maiden name and adds her husband's name, with or without a hyphen. For example, Marilyn Ellis-Orleans or Marilyn Ellis Orleans. a woman does not use her husband's name at all. In this case, if the couple has children, they have to decide if their children will use their father's name, their mother's name, or both. A man does not
