Even before the current rules, issued in 1996, went into effect for schools and government entities in all the German-speaking countries in August 1998, there had been court cases and official protests. Despite a generally negative attitude from most German-speakers, the German media in Austria, Germany and Switzerland almost uniformly adopted the reforms in August 1999. With rare exceptions ( FAZ in 2000 ), the reforms remain in effect today, with complete implementation scheduled for August 1, 2005.

Keeping a grammar hotline is a complicated business. Answer capitalization rulesvary according to the type of publication for which you are writing.

    Questions on Capitalization
Question: When referring to a university, do you capitalize the word university ? Example: I have spent many hours contemplating what I wanted in the University where I would be spending four years of my life. I will be an asset to the University as well. This sentence comes after specifically noting that the student is interested in the University of Colorado. After that reference, when you refer back to the university would it be capitalized? Answer: Most published stylebooks recommend lowercasing the generic designation of institutions (or companies) when it is used in isolation. The Chicago Manual of Style , for example, says this (7.57): Full titles of institutions and companies and the names of their departments and divisions are capitalized, but such words as school or company , as well as generic or descriptive terms, are lowercased when used alone. the University of Chicago the Law School the Department of History the university the history department This, however, is a rule that is frequently countermanded in the house style manuals of individual organizations. I have overturned it myself a few timesusually when I am editing institutional studies where there is the possibility of confusion over whether the term university refers back to a specific university or more broadly to higher education.

    • Mikko wrote: ........... reasons; for example to prevent the birth of a child with serious mental deficiency or genetic abnormality or to terminate a pregnancy that has resulted from rape or incest. Mikko wanted to write a list of reasons, so he should have used a colon instead of a semi-colon. He should also have added a comma after the phrase," for example". e.g .....four different reasons: for example, to prevent the birth of a child with serious mental deficiency or genetic abnormality or to terminate a pregnancy that has resulted from rape or incest.
    • Juha wrote:"To a certain extent this is true, taboos do not affect....." Juha, in English we cannot separate two sentences with a comma. WE must use a semi-colon or a full-stop. As you used a semi-colon (correctly) later in the sentence, you could use a full-stop here, e.g., To a certain extent this is true. Taboos do not affect.....
