Discovering Grammar
An Introduction to English Sentence Structure
ANNE LOBECK, Western Washington University

Discovering Grammar: An Introduction to English Sentence Structure encourages students to explore grammar through a unique "discovery" approach that encompasses both critical thinking and text analysis. Ideal for courses in the structure of English, this book is also useful for courses in English education/language arts, English as a second language, and linguistics. Part One offers an overview of different definitions of and approaches to grammar and outlines the approach to descriptive grammar taken in the text. This section also includes an introduction to phrase structure and evidence for syntactic structure based on movement, pronominalization, and coordination. Part Two introduces each syntactic category (noun, verb, adjective, adverb, and preposition) through morphological and syntactic evidence and highlights the basic division between lexical and grammatical categories. Part Three focuses on the structure of sentences, discussing subordination, complementation, adjunction, and more. In contrast with most traditional grammar bookswhose exercises focus on drills and memorization Discovering Grammar features practical and engaging exercises. Discovery Problems encourage students to "discover" sentence structure by analyzing patterns of data. Students can then apply their skills to Text Analysis exercises in which they examine a wide variety of different texts including excerpts from poetry, novels, television, movies, and other media. Language Diversity Exercises introduce students to other varieties of English, both earlier versions (Old and Middle English) and current "world" Englishes used both inside and outside the U.S. Each chapter concludes with a chapter review and a comprehensive exercise that can be used as a chapter test. The volume is further enhanced by a concise glossary and a guide for doing Language Diversity Exercises.

    Questions on Sentence Structure
Question: The subject of my query is a sentence from the best-selling book by Huston Smith , The World's Religions The hot issue in philosophy of science in recent years is whether science provides us with true and genuine knowledge, or if not, then what does it give us? I have been in heated dispute over the grammatical soundness of the above sentence with a friend. It is my stubborn belief that the sentence is ungrammatical, and yet I am unable to explain why. Could you please analyze the problem (if there is one) and perhaps give me a suggestion or two as to how the sentence might be better phrased (if that be necessary). Thank you very much. Answer: Oh my. This is a sentence sufficiently ungrammatical that its grammar problems actually affect its logic. Let's start with the pure grammar. The sentence parses into a standard English type of subject-verb-predicate nominative. There are complicating factors all along the way. In the subject, there is a string of prepositional phrases that don't attach easily to adjacent modifiers. But the real problem is the predicate, which is composed of two clauses. The reader, already taxed by a complicated subject, longs for relief in the predicate. But the predicate is compounded of two nonparallel elements: an indirect question and a direct question. Because direct questions are formed in English by inversions, there's an extra layer of nonparallelism. Making the predicate parallel will help sort out where the meaning goes awry. Let's try:

At times when reading, we come away with little, if any, understanding. We see the trees, but not the forest. We may miss the meaning for a number of reasons. We may not know the meaning of certain words or the concepts to which they refer. Even when we understand the words, we may come away with little understanding because the writing itself is particularly complex. In this latter instance, it is often helpful to apply grammatical analysis, to consciously attempt to break the sentence into meaningful units.
A Model Of English Sentence Structure
All English sentences follow the same basic formula. All speakers of the language are familiar with that formula, and yet this model is rarely if ever taught.

A Grammar for Reading and Writing
We do not read words, one by one. Meaning is contained not so much in individual words as in collections of words conveying broader or more specific ideas. Readers thus make sense of a sentence by breaking it into meaningful chunks and examining their interrelationships. Skillful writers focus not so much on individual words, as on creating and rephrasing larger phrases and clauses. The topics covered here describe the "meaningful chunks" of English sentence structure. In so doing they examine key grammatical principles underlying effective reading and writing.

Last updated: June 9, 1999 The KISS Approach to Sentence Structure
    by Dr. Ed Vavra
    Notes for Level Two
Counting / Identifying Verbs in Verb Phrases There is disagreement about what is part of and what is not part of a "verb phrase." In Level Two, our objective is to locate basic S / V / C patterns, so we will count everything that, in my experience, it is easiest for students to find. In the following examples, the verb phrases are in blue: They are going to go home soon.
She has to leave at midnight.
He wanted to go with her.
They are helping to repaint the church. In Level Four we will see that these verb phrases can be looked at in different ways in more detail. Expletives "It" and "There" Traditional grammar has a category called "expletives." It includes the two words, "it" and "there" when they are used in the subject position, as in: There are five people here.
It is nice to sleep late. If you already understand this concept and want to use it, there is nothing wrong with it except that it clutters grammar and provides still another concept to frustrate students with. KISS grammar avoids the concept and simply treats both words as regular subjects.
The only serious question raised about the KISS approach to "there" involves subject/verb agreement. In traditional grammar, "there" is an expletive and, in our example, "people" is the subject. Thus the verb must be plural ("are") to agree with the subject. But in the KISS approach, with "there" as the subject, the verb, which is always a form of "to be" ("is," "are," "was," "were," etc.) implies equality and thus requires a predicate noun. Because of this equality, the verb must agree in number with the predicate noun. KISS, in other words, will not allow "There is five men here." because "there" must equal "men" and therefore requires "are."

    Introduction
As we have seen, the conjunction "AND" can be used to combine two sentences into a single compound sentence. Sometimes the two sentences you want to combine have enough in common that you can combine them in an even more efficient way - by creating compound subjects compound verbs , or compound predicates You can do this when only the subject, the verb, or the predicate differ between the two sentences. In this case, you'll use the conjunction "AND" to combine the part that differs in each sentence into a single subject, verb, or predicate. For example: COMPOUND SUBJECT
    COMPOUND VERB
    COMPOUND PREDICATE
Notice that the sentences with the compound subject, verb, or predicate have the same structure as the sentences they were built from. This is different from the compound sentence case: COMPOUND SUBJECT: "Jared and Julie played basketball."
COMPOUND SENTENCE: "Jared played basketball, and Julie played basketball."
With the compound subject, we still have a sentence structure of "Subject - verb - object", but with the compound sentence, the sentence structure became "Subject - verb - object - conjunction - subject - verb - object."
