Writing a Philosophy Essay
Grammar and Style
Introduction
When writing a philosophy essay you should adhere strictly to the grammatical rules of the language, as well as to its principles of morphology (word formation) and punctuation; you should also take care to avoid solecism (i.e., choose the right items of vocabulary for what you want to express), and write in a style which is clear and appropriate to the matter in hand. You should write formal prose; avoid informal constructions and colloquial turns of expression. (Note that this document is written fairly informally, so that in a number of respects – for example in its use of contractions like don't won't shouldn't etc. – is not to be imitated when you write your philosophy essays.) Following these injunctions is partly a matter of courtesy to your reader (who may also be your examiner): it shows that you are taking him or her, and your subject matter, seriously. But the main reason for doing so is that this is the best way to convey your thoughts clearly and accurately, so that your reader knows exactly what you are trying to say and is not distracted by irrelevancies or misled by extraneous difficulties of comprehension, such as unintended ambiguities. Here is a small example of what I mean. In colloquial English it is perfectly acceptable, and entirely normal, to omit the conjunction that at the beginning of a noun clause in such cases as He said that he was coming later , or She denied that he had done it . Do not do this in formal prose, for the very good reason that if you do so you are liable to produce an irritating, if momentary, ambiguity which may distract the reader. Suppose you write:

Common Errors in English
Go to list of errors.
What is an error in English?
The concept of language errors is a fuzzy one. I'll leave to linguists the technical definitions. Here we're concerned only with deviations from the standard use of English as judged by sophisticated users such as professional writers, editors, teachers, and literate executives and personnel officers. The aim of this site is to help you avoid low grades, lost employment opportunities, lost business, and titters of amusement at the way you write or speak. But isn't one person's mistake another's standard usage?
Often enough, but if your standard usage causes other people to consider you stupid or ignorant, you may want to consider changing it. You have the right to express yourself in any manner you please, but if you wish to communicate effectively, you should use nonstandard English only when you intend to rather than fall into it because you don't know any better. Why don't you cover all important points of grammar?
Other sites do this; mine is dedicated to errors in usage. This is not a site dealing with grammar in general.
