ULYSSES S. GRANT 18th President of the United States Name at birth: Hiram Ulysses Grant Soon after birth, Grant's name was changed to Ulysses Hiram Grant; when he arrived at West Point military academy in 1839, he found that he had been registered as Ulysses Simpson Grant, and he never bothered to change it. A sloppy cadet but a great horseman, Grant went on to serve in the Mexican War. Grant Born Hiram Ulysses Grant in Point Pleasant, Ohio, the future military hero grew up in neighboring Georgetown. He worked on the family farm and became skilled with handling horses. An appointment to West Point was secured through his father’s efforts, despite Grant’s lack of interest in a military career. He graduated in 1843 in the bottom half of his class, having impressed few due to his unmilitary bearing, but enjoying success with mathematics and horsemanship. His early tastes ran heavily toward novels and art. His first military experience was gained in the Mexican War (1846-1848). He initially served with the quartermaster corps where he gained a lasting understanding of supply issues, but later saw action. Grant would look back on the American military activities in Mexico with contempt. In 1852, Grant was assigned to Fort Vancouver in the Oregon Territory and later to Fort Humboldt in northern California. The climate's dreariness and separation from his wife and sons apparently led Grant to a dependence on alcohol , an issue that led to his resignation from the service in 1854.

Grant, the most capable of the Union generals during the Civil War, was a master strategist. He won the first major Union victories. President Abraham LINCOLN staunchly defended him against critics and promoted him to command all Union forces. Grant accepted Gen. Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House. However, Grant had no disposition for political leadership, and as president (1869-1877) he scarcely attempted to control events. He made injudicious appointments to public office, and official corruption tainted his administration, although Grant himself was not involved in the peculations. Early Years Grant was born in Point Pleasant, Ohio, on April 27, 1822, and baptized Hiram Ulysses. The eldest son of Jesse Root Grant and Hannah Simpson Grant, he came from a family that, he proudly declared, had been American "for generations, in all its branches, direct and collateral." In 1823 his father moved his tanning business to Georgetown, Ohio, where "Lyss" spent his boyhood. His education at a grammar school in Georgetown, at Maysville Seminary in Maysville, Ky., and at the Presbyterian Academy of Ripley, Ohio, was superficial and repetitious, and the boy showed no scholarly bent. He became noted, however, for his sturdy self-reliance and for his ability to ride and control even the wildest horses.

GRANT Biography On February 16, 1862, during the Civil War, a Union soldier carried a message from his general to the battle-weary Confederate forces defending Fort Donelson in Tennessee. The Confederate commander had asked for terms upon which he could surrender the fort. The 39-year-old Union general, Ulysses S. Grant, replied that only "an unconditional and immediate surrender" would be accepted. This phrase, and the man who said it, at once captured the attention of the country. U. S. Grant became Unconditional Surrender Grant. The surrender of Fort Donelson was an important victory for the North. For Grant it was also a great personal victory after years of failure. Within two years he would become commander of all the Union armies, and a few years later PRESIDENT of the United States. Early Years Grant was born on April 27, 1822, at Point Pleasant, Ohio, the eldest son of Jesse Root Grant and Hannah Simpson Grant. He was named Hiram Ulysses, but he was always called Ulysses. Ulysses loved horses. Almost as soon as he could walk, he learned how to ride. By the time he was 7 or 8 years old he could handle a team of horses. Because he did not like working in his father's tannery, he did most of the work on the family farm, especially taking care of the animals. As a boy, he was thrifty, thoughtful, and hard-working, but not always too clever in business matters.

The Centennial Dedication of Ulysses S. Grant's National Memorial 175th Anniversary of the Birth of Ulysses S. Grant (4/27/1822 to 4/27/1997) and The Centennial Dedication of Ulysses S. Grant's National Memorial (4/27/1897 to 4/27/1997) Grant's great-great-grandson, Ulysses Grant Dietz, representing Grant's descendants, emphasized the importance of teaching the current generation about the Civil War and about his great-great-grandfather's accomplishments. He also wished the renovated National Memorial would maintain its present dignified condition for the future generation in remembrance of General Grant. Popularly known as Grant's Tomb, the memorial is one of the largest mausoleums in the world, rising to an imposing 150 feet from the bluff overlooking the Hudson River. Its construction was a mammoth undertaking for the time: hundreds of men worked on the structure between 1892 and 1897, using over 8,000 tons of Vermont granite. Modeled after some of the most famous monuments ever built, Grant's Tomb incorporated elements from the tomb of King Mausolus at Halicarnassus, the tomb of the Roman Emperor Hadrian, Napoleon's tomb in Dome de Invalides, and Garfield Memorial in Cleveland, Ohio. New York architect John Duncan was selected by a panel of judges to design Grant's tomb. Gen. Grant passed away on July 23, 1885 and his funeral was held on August 8, 1885.

Born April 27, 1822, Hiram Ulysses Grant, as he was named, grew up in Georgetown, Ohio. His childhood was, he recalled, an "uneventful" one. He went to school, did chores, ice skated, fished, and rode horses, like other children on the American frontier . Grant's father, Jesse Root Grant , owned a tannery, but his son hated the horrible stench and the filth of the family business. From a very young age, Hiram showed a remarkable talent for working with horses. His father allowed him to earn his keep by plowing, driving teams to haul wood, and performing other chores. Jesse Grant realized early on that Hiram would never make it as a businessman. In 1839 Jesse sent the boy to the United States Military Academy at West Point, ignoring the fact that the small, skinny seventeen-year-old did not want to go. Upon his arrival at West Point, Grant discovered that there was no one by his name listed as a new cadet. But there was a U. S. Grant on the list. Rather than risk refusal, young Grant changed his name on the spot. Ulysses S. Grant was born. U. S. Grant showed little promise at West Point. Although relatively well educated, he studied little. He stood out in mathematics and horsemanship, which had always been his best subjects, as well as in art. He earned his lowest marks in French. Ulysses graduated 21st out of 39 cadets in his class. Like many graduates, he planned to resign from the military after serving his tour of duty.
