Roman Fomin: Greece wants Macedonia to change its name
The Government of Greece addressed to the executive bodies of the European Union with a request to assist in solving the dispute with Macedonia regarding the name of the country. The discussion how to call the former Yugoslavian republic started back in 1991 – right after Yugoslavia’s collapse (within its previous borderline). The independent state of Macedonia appeared on the frontier with the historic district of Greece having the same name. Greece was OK with such a neighborhood until the word Macedonia started being mentioned in the international documents. But after 1991 the relations between 2 countries became rather intense for the reason of the linguistic dispute.
By the way Macedonia has owned its name for hundreds of years. Macedonia we know about from history text books was much bigger – the territory of the country embraced the up-to-date Macedonia, Kosovo, Albania, Bulgaria and the north of Greece. The Slavs lived on the biggest part of Macedonia in the 6th century of our times; a part of those people separated themselves in the single Slavonian nation – the Macedonians. Only in the beginning of the 20th century when the Turkey’s power over the entire Macedonia was broken, the region was divided between Serbia, Bulgaria and Greece. Later the name of the Serbian southern province was legalized within the framework of the administrative and territorial division of Yugoslavia. Thus the state of Macedonia is situated right on the territory which was bearing the same name during 2.5 thousand years.

Greek govt bans all computer games By Thomas C Greene in Washington Posted: 03/09/2002 at 16:45 GMT
The government of Greece is making heroic efforts to humiliate the nation in front of the entire world, by banning all electronic games. That's right; something as innocent as playing computer chess on your laptop in a hotel lobby is now a crime with penalties of up to three months in stir and a fine of 10,000 euros.
The purpose behind this charming legislation is to crack down on Internet gambling (which already was illegal) or, rather, to enable legislators to enact their little public dance of righteous aversion to Internet gambling.
Improved enforcement of existing law is all that was needed, but there's a problem. Unfortunately, the Greek government is "incapable of distinguishing innocuous video games from illegal gambling machines," according to an older article from the English-language Kathimerini newspaper, written while the bill was under consideration.

    "new Greece"

G reece's economy has entered a period of renaissance after two decades of economic gloom, thanks to Yannos Papantoniou who took over the economic helm as the country's Minister of National Economy and Finance five years ago and performed what has been called a Greek miracle.
Here are some excerpts of an interview in which he shared his thoughts.
    State of the economy
The economic picture is rather remarkable. Growth, at about 3.5 percent, is quite strong for the fourth consecutive year. That is stronger than most other European countries. Inflation is going down to 2 percent. You may remember it was 15 percent when I took over as Minister of Finance.
The fiscal deficit is just 1.7 percent of the GDP, down from 13.9 percent when I took over. So the improvement is quite stunning. We plan to apply for membership of the European and Monetary Union in March 2000, so as to join the EMU by January 1, 2001.
EMU convergence criteria and structural reforms
We have made considerable progress on the structural reform front, as you know, over the last couple of years, especially in terms of privatization, which we administered at a pretty fast rate.
