Greece's Hate Media Breed Popular Hate Culture
AIM Athens, 21 February, 1998 In the late 1990 s, nationalist hysteria has supposedly disappeared and the current government has repeatedly claimed it wants to implement a pragmatic foreign policy. However, it is certainly not helped by the media which continue to "wear yellow kilts." When dealing with human rights and minority issues or with foreign policy towards Greece s neighbors, they are usually full of deception and hate speech. They are obviously interested not in informing but in disinforming their readership or audience so as the latter keep all prevailing negative stereotypes towards neighbors and internal minorities. There was ample evidence of that phenomenon in early 1998. Ten days later, the US Embassy in Athens issued a statement pointing to a "technical error:" two reporters were correctly mentioned to have been charged in mid-1997 under criminal statutes including those dealing with espionage; but, in addition, it was mentioned, inaccurately, that they had been found guilty, instead of that a high bail and a travel ban were posted based on "demonstrable proof of guilt;" K (10/2) and E (11/2) nevertheless deliberately distorted the statement to claim that Americans had admitted having wrongly included the whole case, and in that way, to cast doubt at the whole report s credibility.

Willamette Study Programs in Greece The ancient Greeks were rediscovered by the Renaissance (14th century) and adopted by the Enlightenment (19th century). Nineteenth century rationalists saw their values reflected in Homeric attempts to demythologize the gods and in the golden age of Athenian philosophy. Twentieth century scholarship recognizes that this picture of ancient Greek culture is a caricature, a projection of Enlightenment ideas and values onto the screen of ancient Greece. This caricature ignored other elements of ancient Greece in an attempt to portray the Greeks as the first moderns. Who, then, were the real Greeks? Was their culture as compatible with ours as we've assumed? What debts do American culture and institutions really owe to the ancient Athenians? To answer these and other questions, Willamette University has developed two study programs taught in Greece. During alternate summers we offer both a four week credit program and a two week alumni and friends program. The courses were developed by Dr Catherine Collins and Dr Jeanne Clark in the Rhetoric and Media Studies Department and Dr Lane McGaughy in the Religion Department. We started the four week program six years ago and just added the 2 week program. The purpose of both programs is to explore the rhetoric, archaeology, and religion of ancient Greece. This document provides information on both programs. If you offer a similar program, we'd love to hear more about it. We will happily provide additional information about our courses, how the programs are organized, and costs if you would like further information.

    Mass Media
Currently, state television (ERT S.A.) has three television channels (ET1, NET, ET3) and broadcasts worldwide via satellite. The state radio network comprises five radio stations in Greece and one that broadcasts internationally. Digital satellite television is the great change for the traditional field of Mass Media in Greece. The adoption of law 2644/98 for satellite and terrestrial services has opened up the way for the development of satellite and terrestrial digital television. In the last few years, the Greek Government has taken important initiatives in the field of audiovisual legislative policy. These initiatives reflect the need to regulate new radio and television services, safeguard fundamental principles, such as the protection of minors and human dignity and reinforce the role and powers of the National Radio and Television Council (ESR), which was established as an independent authority. The ESR is in charge of renewing or withdrawing broadcasting licences, guaranteeing economic transparency, pluralism and quality of radio and television services and imposing administrative sanctions in the broadcasters who are deemed not to have respected their obligations. There have been efforts by the State to regulate the sector according to the needs of the industry and to harmonise the operating conditions of the sector according to the European Union’s regulations with regard to advertising time, programme quotas, the protection of minors and the issue of media ownership.

The Greek press: Blaming the government and the US
The Greek press was divided in its reaction to the killing of UK military attache Brigadier Stephen Saunders, with some commentators blaming the United States and others attacking the Greek Government over its failure to prevent terrorism. The independent centre-right paper Kathimerini said the murder came at a time when "the Americans are exerting unbearable pressure with... baseless accusations calling for stricter, and on the whole anti-democratic, anti-terrorist measures".
We believe that the incidents are made in the USA
Rizospastis The Communist Party paper Rizospastis pinned the blame for the attack squarely on the US itself. "It is no coincidence that two or three days ago we had one American attack after the other saying that there is terrorism in Greece," the paper said. "We believe that the incidents are made in the USA," it added.

These newspapers, with the largest circulation in their category, were morning conservative daily ‘Kathimerini’ (K), liberal Sunday weekly ‘Vima’ (V), liberal evening daily ‘Nea ’ (N), and self-proclaimed Greek ‘ Economist’ weekly ‘ Economikos Tachydromos’ (ET) (the latter three belong to the oldest and most poweful Lambrakis press group).
