My own students and others often ask me about materials available for the study of ancient Greek on the web. There are a lot of difficulties involved in studying Greek, whether in a classroom setting or on one's own. Unfortunately right now the web has not lived up to its potential to ease those difficulties. Nonetheless students now are much better off than they were a decade ago, and one can only imagine (hope?) that within the next few years we will see further progress. Already Unicode promises to ease many of the problems associated with displaying ancient Greek on the web, for example. Here are a few of the things that I myself have prepared for use by students. Below them you will find some selected resources from around the web that I think are particularly appropriate for students just beginning the study of ancient Greek. If you are thinking of trying to learn ancient Greek on your own, you might want to check out my standard response to people who want to learn ancient Greek on their own.
My Own Materials
These are somewhat random and I do not expect that this site will ever become a place where large amounts of consistent materials focused on the Greek language will appear.

As far as I know there is only one language: the Uninterrupted Greek Language... It is not a small thing for the Modern Greek poet to use the same words Sappho and Archilochus used for the sky, the sea, the sun, the wind. Indeed, it is very important. In our daily communication we use the roots that can be traced back there: in the Ancient Greek language. II. Dear friends, it has been granted to me to write in a language that is spoken only by a few million people. But a language spoken without interruption, with very few differences, throughout more than two thousand five hundred years. This apparently surprising spatial-temporal distance is found in the cultural dimensions of my country. Its spatial area is one of the smallest; but its temporal extension is infinite.

    OF THE FUTURE SPACE SOCIETIES
By Michael D. Rellos (Paper to the 5th Congress "COSMIC SPACE AND PHILOSOPHY" in Delphi, Greece, October 22-25, 1993)
The modern world is based on the universality of trade and communications. The usual method of communication, in all times, consists in some human language. There exist more than 2.000 languages in the world. This is a great problem for all humanity and, and as far it concerns History, there are two solutions: Translation and Predominance of only one language. Fortunately, almost every man is able to learn and speak more than one language. In modern countries millions of people study foreign languages and especially those of the most influential states. Political and cultural influence has always been the main causes for the existence of a predominant language. Translation is the necessary procedure for the harmonization of the communication among people of different origins. This has been so for many centuries. Communication problems are always provoked by the need of many people to exchange ideas and specific information for various reasons and about many things. Then, if the means of communication, i.e. the languages, are not compatible and if there exists a luck of knowledge of the "foreign" language, communication becomes uncertain. Especially in now-a-days, the universal trade and the speed of information transfer through satellites, TV stations, radio stations, telephones, the Internet and other sources, magnify the problem of modern Babel...

NOTE: accents, diacritics, and special symbols have been eliminated or modified in the interest of making the text readable in the absence of the appropriate encoding system and font. Thus, long marks and the like are not indicated, and so cited forms should be used with caution. Language Name: Ancient Greek, Classical Greek, Greek (without reference to time period, the ancient form of the language is usually taken as the unmarked value, and within Ancient Greek, the Attic dialect (see below on Dialects ) is the usual point of reference); autonym: hellenike (actually an adjective derived from Hellen , the word for a 'Greek' in general (as opposed to a member of one of the Greek dialect groups; as an adjective, it is modifying an understood noun 'language'). Location: Family: Ancient Greek is generally taken to be the only representative (though note the existence of different dialects) of the Greek or Hellenic branch of Indo-European. There is some dispute as to whether Ancient Macedonian (the native language of Philip and Alexander), if it has any special affinity to Greek at all, is a dialect within Greek (see below) or a sibling language to all of the known Ancient Greek dialects. If the latter view is correct, then Macedonian and Greek would be the two subbranches of a group within Indo-European which could more properly be called Hellenic.
