"There is a land called Crete, in the midst of the wine-dark sea, a fair, rich land, begirt with water; and therein are many men past counting, and ninety cities." When Homer sang these lines, perhaps in the ninth century before our era, Greece had almost forgotten, though the poet had not, that the island whose wealth seemed to him even then so great had once been wealthier still; that it had held sway with a powerful fleet over most of the Aegean and part of mainland Greece; and that it had developed, a thousand years before the siege of Troy, one of the most artistic civilizations in history. Probably it was this Aegean culture as ancient to him as he is to us that Homer recalled when he spoke of a Golden Age in which men had been more civilized, and life more refined, than in his own disordered time . . . . . Language 144: Ancient Greek
Commander Daniel Carlson, Professor Prerequisite: None. (3 credits) This brief seminar course introduces cadets to one of the parent languages of modern English, the most widely used language in the Federation today. Offered Second Term. (From the Starfleet Academy catalog, 2377-2378) Introduction Welcome to Introduction to Ancient Greek. I'm sure some of you are here only for a few extra credits, but that's okay. This is a very informal class Greek isn't even spoken in modern society anyway. But the language did in fact have a large impact on modern English, the official language for Federation interstellar communication and trade. And of course, there are those pilots and tactical officers who want to know just what those words are when the CO orders evasive maneuvers. The class will deal mostly with written Greek. We'll start with a basic overview of the syntax and grammar, and look at a few of Greece's most important literary works. Further information will be provided in class. For now, familiarize yourself with the Greek Alphabet, displayed below.

FAQs Have a great year! MEET YOUR FELLOW OLYMPIANS! Sparta Athens Corinth Argos ... Megara It's around 480 BC. You are an Olympian contestant, representing your city-state at the Olympic games! How would you behave? Let's find out! SPARTA YOU ARE A SPARTAN! Be proud! You have endured unbelievable pain and hardship to become a superior Spartan soldier and citizen! Taken away from your parents at age 7, you lived a harsh and often brutal life in the soldiers barracks. You were beaten by older children who started fights to help make you tough and strong. You were often were whipped in front of groups of other Spartans, including your parents, but never cried out in pain. You were given very little food, but encouraged to steal food, instead. If caught stealing, you were beaten. To avoid severe pain, you learned to be cunning, to lie, to cheat, to steal, and how to get away with it! Some of you are members of the Spartan secret police ( Krypteia ) and enjoy spying on slaves. If you find a slave who is showing signs of leadership, you have orders to kill them immediately. You are fierce, capable, and proud of your strength. You know you are superior and are delighted to be Spartan!
