Colloquium
The Greek Islands and the Sea
21-22 September 2001 Over the centuries the Greek islands and their inhabitants have played a pivotal role in the development and dissemination of Hellenic cultural identity and tradition. The Hellenic Institute at Royal Holloway, University of London , organized a two-day colloquium to discuss and celebrate that role. The colloquium The Greek Islands and the Sea was held at Royal Holloway's Campus at Egham, Surrey , between 21-22 September 2001 (Arts building, Lecture Theatre 1), and was attended by ninety-nine delegates from nine countries (Australia, Britain, Canada, France, Greece, Israel, Malta, Switzerland and Turkey). Thirteen scholars gave papers covering a wide geographical span from the prehistoric times to the present. Cyprian Broodbank focused on Kythera and Ian Rutherford looked at the Cyclades. Kim Ayodeji, Christy Constantakopoulou and Nick Vella looked at the classical period, discussing fishing, agriculture and coastal shrines respectively. Three papers dealt with the periods of Byzantine and Latin rule: John Pryor on Byzantine warships in the 949 expedition to Crete, Demetrios Letsios on the Jewish communities of the Aegean islands, and David Jacoby on the demography of Euboea under Venetian rule. Elizabeth Zachariadou and Elisabeth Malamut discussed the Aegean islands under Latin and Turkish rule. Nasa Patapiou (through her communication) and Alexis Alexandris investigated the Ionian islands, Cyprus and Imbros in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Presenter: Megan McCormick
Megan McCormick begins her journey with a boat trip to the island of Hydra , where the annual Miaoulia festival is taking place. The festival, which takes place in June, celebrates the fight for Greek independence from Turkey around 1800. The islanders dress up in period costume and they re-enact the events of a glorious sea-battle, when they wreaked havoc by sending small rowing boats packed with explosives amongst the Turkish battle ships. After the explosions have died down, the dancing continues throughout the night.
No Man is an island: megan in the Greek islands
A traditional Catholic Church in Mykonos

From Hydra Megan journeys to Patmos , one of the Dodecanese islands close to Turkey. Patmos is seen as a sacred place to many Christians, and is the only place in Europe where God was said to have appeared on earth. St John was exiled here in 95AD and heard the voice which prompted him to write the Book of Revelations. The cave that was his home is now the focal point for pilgrims, and there has been a monastery on Patmos since 1088. The monks have always been influential in the running of the island and consequently it has remained very peaceful and laid back.

The Cycladic islands are a group of 56 islands of varying sizes scattered over the azure waters of the Aegean Sea. The Cyclades lie to the east of Peloponnese and southeast of the coast of Attica. They stretch as far as Samos and Ikaria in the eastern part and extend to the south by the Cretan Sea. The islands have long stretches of sandy beaches, fragrant pine forests, and rocky capes with crystalline blue waters. The culture is rich and colorful giving birth to one of the most important civilizations, the Cycladic civilization (3000-1000 BC). The charming islands are embellished with little white houses, countless little churches, windmills, narrow alleyways, storm-lashed landscape, and scenic local architecture. Each island is unique.

Destinations The Greek Islands Greece is a popular summer destination for travellers from around the world, and the islands in particular are a favourite location to catch a unique mix of sun, sea, history, and culture . Spring or Autumn are possibly even better times to visit the Greek Islands, with everything you'd expect from the islands, but without the crowds.
Visiting the Greek islands is all about escaping the cares of our modern, hectic lifestyle and enjoying the simple things of life - food, drink, sun, and surf . But Greece offers much more, and the fascinating history of this region is well represented by impressive ancient Greek, Roman, and Ottoman remains and architecture.

The beautiful scenery, exciting archaeological sites, picturesque little villages and romantic islands make Greece a logical choice for anyone who wants a relaxing holiday with lots of atmosphere and eye appeal.
This particular journey has been designed especially to allow you several days in each location giving you time to enjoy and absorb the atmosphere of your surroundings.
Tiny tranquil harbors, brightly painted fishing boats reflecting in the mirror still waters, deserted coves with iridescent blue pools, donkeys with saddle bags trudging along cobblestone paths and old villages of stone built houses that still exude the atmosphere of a more leisurely age.
If these are the images you are looking for, you'll find them on this tour. The Lost City of Atlantis
One of the highlights of this journey is a three night stay on the island of Santorini where the archaeological excavation at Akrotiri is said to be that of the "Lost City of Atlantis."

The Glorious Foods of Greece :
Traditional Recipes from Islands, Cities, and Villages
by Diane Kochilas
Amazon.com's Best of 2001 Moussaka, grilled fish, and feta salad with olivesthat's it for Greek food, right? Wrong, as abundantly proved by Diane Kochilas's masterful The Glorious Foods of Greece. For over 10 years, Kochilas investigated the vast wealth of Greek cooking, traveling to its islands, cities, mountains, and villages and talking to cooks, bakers, fisherman, farmers, and cheese makers. She listened astutely, and the result is not only hundreds of authentic recipes, but a definitive culinary guide.
Following an introduction in which Kochilas details, among other fascinating information, the nature of each region's cuisine (Rooumali and Epirus are shepherds' domains, she writes, "where the reigning food is pita, as in savory pie, hundreds of them...."),...
