Aegina Town
Like many other Greek islands, the capital takes its name from the name of the island itself and is situated on the Western Side of the Island.
Aegina town with its population of just over 6,000 is a thriving working port and is in fact, the second largest in Greece after Piraeus. On approaching Aegina town by sea, the first sight people see is that of the small and picturesque church of Aghios Nikolaos which sits on a jetty on the waterfront. The harbour was built by Capodistrias using the stones from the ruins of Kolona. At the edge of the town stand several classical mansions, along with a number of buildings constructed after the liberation of Greece in 1828. To the left of the port is the hill of Kolona, upon which are the remains of the temple of Apollo which, after being struck by lightening, now amounts to only a single column.
Aegina town is only really touched upon by most tourists, with most of them heading for the beach resort of Aghia Marina.

Early History.
It would appear that the first settlers came from the Peloponnese around 3500-3000 BC and built a suburb in the area of Colona as well as in the Temple of Aphaea. In the Early Bronze Age (2500-2000BC), the Ageans, a tribe similar to the Cretans came and settled on Aegina. It seems that they developed trading links with Attica, the Peloponnese, the Cycladic islands and Crete. This was cut short though by the arrival of Greek tribes into the area, the Acheans. However, this new civilisation was completely wiped out, possibly by an unexpected invasion and Aegina fell silent. The first actual recorded information about Aegina is the conquest of the island by the Doreans of Epidavros in 950 BC. They chose Aegina as their base in order to concentrate on the sea and trading, and soon became very rich and powerful. These traders imported huge amounts of silver from North Africa (where it had no value!) and introduced this as a means of exchange. From this silver, the first coins were created which were imprinted with the image of a turtle. Gradually, Aegina slipped into decline. The traders turned their hand to money lending and Aegina became a centre for borrowing and the seeds of destruction grew.

Greece is located at the southernmost tip of Europe and has one of the most unique geographic formations of any country in Europe. Including the islands, it has an area of 50,959 square miles and a population of 10.2 million (1991 census). An estimated five million Greeks live abroad. Greece is washed on three sides by seas: by the Ionian Sea to the west, the Aegean Sea to the east and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. To the north lie Albania, former Yugoslavia and Bulgaria. To the northeast is Turkey.
At the crossroads of three continents, Greece is a stepping-stone to Asia and Africa. Some four-fifths of Greece's land territory is mountainous.

Greek Island Location and Geography The Ionian Islands are located off the western side of the Greek mainland in the Gulf of Corinth. Only the northernmost of the seven, Kerkira, has enough rainfall to make it fertile. The Aegean Island groups are located south of mainland Greece and are mountainous like the mainland. Some of the islands, such as Samothraki originated from volcanoes. To the southeast are the rocky islands of Lesvos, Khios and Samos. These islands are close to Turkey. In the central Aegean Sea, are the Northern Sporades or "scattered" islands. Farther south are the Cyclades - "islands in a circle." Between the Cyclades and Turkey there is the Dodecanese group, which includes Rhodes and other major islands. Finally the largest Greek island, Crete, is at the far south of Greece's territory. Yacht charter bases - the Greek islands
There are probably few places in the world which offer a better sailing environment than Greece. The Aegean sea is literally dotted with hundreds of islands and islets, all within easy reach of one another, which makes it possible to island hop from one side of Greece to the other. If you also consider the glorious summer sunshine, the crystal-clear, turquoise seas, golden beaches and a constant summer wind, you will have the ideal sailing holiday. The Greek islands are divided into the following well-known and easily identifiable island groups and sailing areas: the North Ionian, the South Ionian, the North Aegean, the South Aegean, the Saronikos, the Cyclades, the Dodecanese, Crete, Evia, Halkidiki, the gulf of Patras and the Peloponese. Each island group is unique and individual, making it possible to come to Greece year after year and still feel like you are in a completely different place.
