Brief History of Junior Carifta The Carifta Championships has become more than just a showcase for young track and field athletes to display their potential annually throughout the Caribbean. It is a nursery in some ways, for tomorrow’s Olympians and world stars. Even in earlier times before the Championships, top ranking junior champions from several countries developed into world ranking performers and there is no doubt this trend will continue as the games progress annually. As the first inter-regional athletics championships to be staged for promising champions the Carifta Games forms the backdrop to international recognition. It was the brainchild of several Caribbean athletics officials, including Jessie Noel of Trinidad and Tobago and Austin Sealy of Barbados. They set about to establish this historic event. They worked towards establishing a regional championship at junior level and their admirable effort was well supported throughout the Caribbean. Of course, Barbados became the first venue and such as the success of this initial meeting, there was no stopping the roller-coaster effect that developed with each succeeding championship. It moved to Trinidad, Jamaica, Bermuda, Bahamas and in recent times, Guadeloupe and Martinique. One would hope that smaller or less financially developed islands like St. Vincent, Grenada, St. Lucia and Dominica would soon get in on the act of hosting these games.

By Janette Hull A Nation that encourages sports and gives encouragement to its athletes is enriched in many ways. We make friends through sports. More nations are brought together by sports like cricket, football, athletics, softball, netball and many more. Netball is one of the many games played in Nevis, but not many Nevisians know the role this game has played over the years, nor even how it started. Did you know that netball has put Nevis on the world map? If not, please read on. Netball originated in the United States of America, and was introduced to the Caribbean by Physical education officers from England who came to the Islands on teaching assignments. Althought the game is played in the USA , it is not popular, whereas it is popular in the United Kingdom. Netball in Nevis is without a doubt the outstanding women’s sport. Prior to 1950 Netball was introduced and played by the Excelsior School on the grounds of St Pauls Rectory. An annual competition was held between the Excelsior School of Nevis and the Girls High School from St Kitts. 1939 - 1940 saw a change. Schools no longer exchanged visits, but ex-pupils from the Excelsior School and the Girls High School played matches in both islands with Nevis always winning. 1945 - 1955 teams from the Charlestown Girls School and ex -pupils from the Charlestown Secondary School practiced at Liburd’s Yard (the ground on which the Administration Building now stands).

Welcome to the Grenada Genealogy Project
History
Although Grenada has much in common with the other small islands to its north, it has tended throughout its history to look to larger states in an effort to define its role in the world. Since its initial discovery by Christopher Columbus, Grenada has shared or sought associations of differing kinds with France, Britain, Trinidad and Tobago, Cuba (and, by extension, the Soviet Union), and the United States. Spain's association with the island extended little beyond sighting it and giving it a name, inasmuch as the Spanish made no effort to establish a colony, perhaps because of the ferocity of the Caribs already in residence (see The Pre-European Population, ch. 1). Interestingly, the island's present name is not that given to it by Columbus. That name, which it bore but briefly, was Concepción . Assigned in 1498, it had given way by 1523 on maps and charts of the region to the Spanish variant of its current designation, Granada . Speculation has it that Spanish explorers, struck by the resemblance of Grenada's mountains to those of the Sierra Nevada in Spain, applied the familiar name of a great city to this strange place so far from home. Over the centuries, although control of the island passed from France to Britain (and briefly back to France again), the name endured with but the slightest of etymological alterations, changing from

The Lockheed AC-130H has participated in many notable combat operations since the end of the Vietnam War including the attempted rescue of the crew of the USS Mayaguez in 1975, the Grenada operation in October 1983, Operation Just Cause in Panama (1989-1990), Operation Desert Storm in Iraq (1991), Operation Restore Hope in Somalia (1993-1994), and Operation Deliberate Force in Bosnia (1995). On January 31, 1991, the first AC-130H was lost in combat supporting coalition forces engaged in ground combat during the battle of Khafji in Operation Desert Storm. A second aircraft supporting operations in Somalia was lost on March 15, 1994 when its 105-mm cannon exploded while the aircraft was airborne.
Regional Military Actions
A much-feared World War III never came to pass in the 20th century. In fact, the Cold War ended in 1989 with the thud of the falling Berlin Wall and the colossal statues of Lenin rather than with nuclear bombs. Instead, many regional wars broke out both during and after the Cold War, caused by centuries of ethnic and religious conflict that had been held in check by colonization and occupation. There were military operations overseen by supranational organizations, such as the United Nations or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), which enforced treaties or helped with humanitarian activities. The world looked to the United States, as one of the two superpowers, to lead the way in these conflicts, a position that did not always make it happy.

D uring these deployments, the unit has responded to a number of crisis that have tested the Marines’ capabilities and proven they are ready to accomplish any given mission. O n Dec. 15, 1982, the Marine Corps designated its deploying units "Marine Amphibious Units (MAUs)", and alongside the 24th and 26th MAUs, the 22d MAU maintained a brisk operational pace. I n early 1983, the 22nd MAU served as the U.S. contingent to the Multinational Peacekeeping Force in Lebanon until replaced in May by the 24th MAU, at which time it returned to the United States. In October, the 22nd MAU set sail, again bound for Lebanon. Shortly after embarkation, the 22nd MAU participated in the invasion of Grenada, dubbed Operation Urgent Fury. After completing their mission on Grenada, the MAU again headed toward Lebanon where they remained afloat and ashore until April 1984. F or the next six years the unit continued an aggressive deployment schedule in concert with its sister MAUs. In February 1988, the word "amphibious" was dropped in lieu of "expeditionary" for all deploying units and the unit received its current designation as a Marine Expeditionary Unit.

The United States provided El Salvador with a program of economic aid and military training when a guerrilla insurgency was threatening to topple its government. It also actively encouraged the transition to an elected democratic government, but efforts to curb the active right-wing death squads were only partly successful. U.S. support helped stabilize the government, but the level of violence in El Salvador remained undiminished and actually increased in late 1989. A peace agreement was reached, however, in early 1992. Subsequently, the administration of President George Bush abandoned any effort to secure military aid for the contras. The Bush administration also supported the opposition political coalition, led by Violetta Chamorro, which won an astonishing upset election over the Sandinistas in February 1990. The Reagan administration was more fortunate in witnessing a return to democracy throughout Latin America, from Guatemala to Argentina. The emergence of democratically elected governments was not limited to Latin America, however; in Asia, the "people power" campaign of Corazon Aquino overthrew the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos, and elections in Korea ended decades of military rule.

OUR History
For over 30 years, Canadian Crossroads International (CCI) has played a key role in fostering global awareness and understanding through cross-cultural exchange and public education. CCI grew out of its American counterpart, Operation Crossroads Africa , founded by Dr. James H. Robinson in the 1950s. Mr. Robinson envisioned "one world", where there was mutual understanding and respect for racial and cultural differences. He believed all people are "fundamentally more similar than dissimilar", and that by living and working together, we create a "crossroads" of cultures and personal experience - the birthplace of both individual and societal change. This ideal led Mr. Robinson to develop a volunteer work program for Americans in Africa, one of the first programs of its kind. Mr. Robinson's vision received international recognition and quickly caught on in Canada. Throughout the 60s, small groups of Canadian volunteers coordinated similar placements for Canadians with the objective of creating a more equitable and sustainable world. In 1969, Canadian Crossroads International became an independent, federally chartered organization. Ever since then, CCI has pursued Dr. Robinson's "one world" vision, arranging two-way volunteer placements and internships in more than 70 Canadian communities and now over 25 countries in Africa, Asia, South America and the Caribbean.

A Note on the Terrorist Attacks in the United States
On behalf of the The Virtual Institute of Caribbean Studies' advisory board, I would like to express our condemnation of the recent terror attacks in the United States. Our heart goes out to all families in the world who lost loved ones in these tragic and senseless acts of aggression, in particular to the families and friends of the many thousands American citizens who lost their lives. As in all acts of terror, nothing of any moral value or beauty has been achieved, only innocent people have been killed, and there is simply nothing that by any stretch of the imagination could justify this. We mourn the victims of this ultimate act of nihilism and stand profoundly humbled by those who saved innocent lives regardless of their own safety. There are no words to express our gratitude for their example. Holger Henke, Ph.D.
