Papua New Guinea lies between longitudes 141 and 160 East and latitudes 1 and 12 South. It consists of a mainland and a collection of islands of varying sizes. Papua New Guinea forms the eastern part of the island of New Guinea, the worlds second largest island after Greenland. The western part is the Indonesian Province of Irian Jaya (formerly Dutch New Guinea). The island as a whole has an area of 868,000 sq km, of which 474,000 sq km is part of Papua New Guinea.
Of the total land are of 474,000 sq km, 85 percent is on the mainland the remainder on some 600 islands. Of these, New Britain, New Ireland and Manus are the largest of the Bismark Archipelago and Buka and Bougainville of the Solomons group.
The dominant feature of the country is the central spine, a complex of high mountain ranges interested by alpine valleys and many plateaus. This spine runs from east to west, in the Indonesia Province of Irian Jaya, and rises steeply from the coastal and river plains to its north and south. Its width varies from 240 km at its centre to 100 km at each of its extremities. The average height of the mountains is 3000 metres, the highest being Mt Wilhelm which stands 4706 metres above sea level.

Just south of the equator and only 160 km north of Australia is the main island of "New Guinea" which covers 85% of the nations territory. The rest is made up of 600 tropical islands, including the bigger islands like New Britain, New Ireland and Bougainville. The western part of the main island, Irian Jaya is part of Indonesia.

New Guinea Geography, Climate and Location New Guinea is an island in the southwestern Pacific Ocean just north of Australia. It has an area of about 790,000 sq. km (305,000 sq. mi.) Along the coast, the temperature is probably 27 degrees Celsius (80 degrees Fahrenheit.) Jaya is its highest peak at 5,029 meters (16,500 feet). New Guinea is in the monsoon region, so it has more than 2,540 mm (100 inches) of rain per year. In the rainy season, the river will rise just below the floor of the houses, which are around 6 feet above the river. The sea level land has an average temperature of between 21and 32 degree Celsius (70 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit). A bunch of streams and rivers flow down the slopes of the mountains and across the lowlands. New Guinea's largest rives are the Fly and Sepik. They have large swampy places around them in the lowlands. Home History People and Economy Authors ... Bibliography

GEOGRAPHY OF PAPUA NEW GUINEA It's GEOGRAPHY time! What geographical features can you spot on this map of Papua New Guinea? (Hint: mountains and rivers are two types of geographical features.) Here is Willie the Woodchuck to answer all the questions we might have about Papua New Guinea!!! So, Willie, tell us - Where can we find Papua New Guinea on a world map? Well, now, that's quite simple! You can find Papua New Guinea in the South Pacific. It's an island just south of the equator and a tad bit north of Australia.
Wow, Willie! You're pretty smart. Do you know how big the country of Papua New Guinea is?
As a matter of fact, I do! The total area of Papua New Guinea is 461,690 square kilometers. To help you picture how big this is, think of the state of California. Papua New Guinea is just slightly larger than California.
Willie, we can see that Papua New Guinea is an island, but the map only shows half of the island. Why is that?
Great question! The country of Papua New Guinea only owns the eastern part of the New Guinea Island. The other side of the island belongs to the Indonesian Province called Irian Jaya. Check out these beautiful pictures ~ I wonder where they were taken?
