Care of Guinea Pigs This care sheets contains basic information for the care of guinea pigs. Please consult more detailed sources for additional information books, websites or your veterinarian. The guinea pig (or cavy) is a member of the rodent family with an average life span of 4 to 7 years. These sociable, somewhat skittish creatures are easy to care for, seldom bite and are exceptionally clean. Wild guinea pigs are a prey species and their domestic counterparts retain a desire to run for cover when startled or threatened and so it is necessary to provide a shelter in their cage where they can seek safety. Since they do not climb they are easy to contain in a habitat and are easily located should they run free. Guinea pigs must chew to wear down their constantly-growing front teeth, so you need to provide chew items such as apple, birch or willow branches, dried (whole grain) bread crusts, hay and/or firm vegetables such as carrots and broccoli stems. Guinea pigs are social animals, so it is best if they live in pairs. Usually sows (females) cohabit well as either siblings or mother-daughter pairs. Boars (males) will sometimes get along but they often do not unless raised together. Boars should not be placed with sows under any circumstances even for a short period. Please do not breed guinea pigs. It is more difficult than you might think to find good, long term homes for the offspring. It is possible to have guinea pigs neutered but there is some risk involved – consult a veterinarian specializing in small animals.

We all want our beloved rodents to be happy and healthy. This means paying the vet hundreds of dollars for exams, right? No! Ask any vet the care your rodent gets at home has far more effect on his health than any vet exam. In fact, most vets give out advice along with prescriptions advice that could have prevented the illness in the first place! Wouldn't you like to have that advice now, before you have to hear it from your vet? Rats, mice, gerbils, hamsters, and guinea pigs all have different needs. For instance, guinea pigs cannot metabolize vitamin C on their own, so you must provide it in their diet every day, or they can develop serious, and even fatal, health problems. Rats and mice don't have this problem, however. Understanding your rodent's diet needs is easy, will keep him healthier and happier, and can prevent expensive treatments in the future. Note: we are not saying you will never have to visit the vet again! Vet care is important to your pet's health. However, with the care techniques in this book, you can prevent a multitude of costly illnesses with just a little knowledge!

Keep Your Cool! The ideal Temperature for the Guinea Pig is 75°. Higher temperatures can lead to heat stroke. Nutrition Guinea Pigs must have adequate amounts of Vitamin C in their diets since their bodies are not capable of synthesizing the vitamin internally (sort of like the way humans can’t absorb calcium without vitamin D – that’s why they add it to milk). Most commercial Guinea Pig food pellets satisfy this requirement, but make sure it’s fresh. The vitamin levels in this type of form begin to lose potency after just six weeks. Adding fruit and vegetables to you pet’s diet for good measure is recommend to insure proper nutrition and will make it more tastier too). Food and water should be kept off the floor for sanitary reasons. A water bottle and hanging food tray is recommended. Change daily. Housing Housing should be at least 18 inches high, with 2 square feet of space for each pet. A glass aquarium with a screen cover, lined with wood chips or commercial bedding, is fine. If you choose a wire cage, provide a smooth floor surface made of metal or plastic sheeting. The wire netting can be rough on his feet. A small amount of hay for him to burrow in will make him a happypet. I also recommend installing a ramp or ledge made of plastic or metal ( wood is difficult to clean) for him to climb on, and hide under. The cage should be thoroughly cleaned and bedding changed weekly.

A Few Things to Consider before Adopting a Guinea Pig
Guinea pigs make great pets! They are interactive in a way that fish are not, and require less space than either dogs or cats. However, caring for them does require time, money, and space, and some of their needs and personality quirks are not obvious to first-time adopters. If you aren't sure whether guinea pigs are right for you, an excellent resource is Are You the Pet for Me?: Choosing the Right Pet for Your Family by Mary Jane Checchi. You can also ask questions of any of the guinea pig fosterers whose contact information appears on this web site. If you plan to give the guinea pig to a child , there are a few things to consider:
  • Is the child old enough to be responsible for a sentient being? (Parents should supervise pet care until the child is at least 18 years old.)
  • If the child is older, who will care for the guinea pig if the guinea pig is still alive when the child, all grown up, leaves home? With proper care, a guinea pig can easily live 5-8 years, so this is something to think about when adopting a young guinea pig for a teenager, or even a child who is 11 or 12 years old.
  • If the child isn't yours, have you checked with the parents to see if they are willing to add a pet to the family?

How to give a Cat a Bath
by Cathy Powell
Our Favorite Wild Animal Meerkats were recently made famous by the movie "The Lion King" because one of the main characters, Timon, is a Meerkat. Isn't he cute? As it turns out Meerkats are in the same family as the Mongoose of which there are many different varieties. Meerkats live in family units in boroughs (dens) that they dig underground. The Meerkat in the picture above is probably acting as the lookout for the den. The lookout duty is traded off among the adult Meerkats of the den so someone can alert them to danger at all times. Although Meerkats are not available as pets, we think they are a delightful addition to our information service!

Children and Guinea Pigs The Home for Unwanted and Abandoned Guinea Pigs
A living being is a big responsibility The Home got a call one December from a woman who wanted a guinea pig for her son for Christmas. The boy was almost six, and she thought the guinea pig would help his "learn responsibility." The mother said she really wanted a dog but was going to "start small, with something that will not take a lot of time." I cried inside for whatever guinea pig would end up in this household (The Home would not adopt to them). A living being should not be an educational toy. How, then, to teach responsibility? Teaching by Example The almost six-year-old boy should be told, "You can't have a pet until you can take care of one. That means not only feeding and cleaning and attention, but money and a car for vet trips, and a place where the animal can live with you for the natural length of her life. But - doesn't that rule out teenagers too, and most college students? Yes, it does. Only adults (and not all of them) are qualified to have pets. Getting a pet "for" a child is a misallotment of responsibility that can have dire consequences for the pet. A sad scene, for example, which I have seen several times goes like this: A mother brings a cat to a shelter, explaining, "My daughter is grown now; she left her cat. I'm tired of him. The middle-aged cat’s chances of adoption are slim. Who really is to blame here? The mother allowed the cat in the home knowing his life expectancy. The responsibility for the cat was hoisted on the daughter when she was in no position to take it.

http://members.aol.com/homeforgps/advice/classroom.htm
Guinea Pigs in the Classroom The Home for Unwanted and Abandoned Guinea Pigs
I am a being - not a learning tool! GUINEA PIGS IN THE CLASSROOM We are often asked if having a guinea pig in a classroom is a good idea. Most classroom guinea pigs, alas, do NOT have appropriate care; but it is not theoretically impossible for a classroom to be a suitable place for a guinea pig. Here are the questions to ask (and a key to the ideal answers). A Test For Animals in the Classroom What is the temperature in the room? Guinea pigs require at least 70 degrees, INCLUDING OVERNIGHT, and must have no drafts. 2. Who will take care of the guinea pig on weekends? The guinea pig should NEVER be left alone, and a janitor feeding the animal once or twice over the weekend is not sufficient care either. The pet needs to go to a home, THE SAME ONE EACH WEEKEND, where he will receive love, attention, and vet care in case of emergency (which would not be noted if he were alone in the empty school). 3. Where will the pet go in the summer? A permanent home should be arranged before obtaining the guinea pig. 4. What housing and food will the guinea pig have? Is money available for vet care if needed? Appropriate guinea pig care is described in our free fIyer. An adult should agree in advance to take care of the guinea pig and purchase supplies, including fresh vegetables regularly. Funds should be available for vet care should it be needed.

What you Don't Want to Know About What Happens to Unwanted Guinea Pigs
A dump is not taking responsibility for finding a home for your pet. A guinea pig can be dumped at a number of places, including pet stores. What all guinea pig dumps have in common is irresponsible pet ownership.
The Great Outdoors
The worst kind of dump is letting a guinea pig "go" outdoors. The usual thinking is that the animal has a chance to survive on its own, whereas a shelter will just put it down. WRONG. It is a guaranteed death sentence and one that is extremely horrible for the animal to suffer, no matter what happensdying by being killed by any number of predators, or dying from starvation or dehydration or the elements. You would think that most sane and caring people would never do this. However, one story that stands out is of a teenage boy who was allegedly told by his parents to find a good home for his guinea pig because he wasn't taking care of it any more. (Of course, it was probably something more like, "Get rid of that &#@!* smelly rodent.") Luckily, a very caring animal rescue couple happened to be fishing on the side of this river bank one afternoon. The boy was seen on the bridge over the river tossing the guinea pig into the water! The husband of the couple on the river bank dove into the cold water to save the poor guinea pig. They did save him and went to confront the parents of the boy. A slap on the wrist perhaps? Who knows. But you can be sure that when that happy family bought the cute guinea pig at the pet store earlier in its life, the pet store personnel had

They are naturally clean and fairly hardy. They can be kept indoors or in outside accommodation. Although naturally nervous they soon become used to gentle handling. Guinea pig varieties are distinguished by the texture, length and colour of their hair and by coat patterns. They can broadly be classified as Smooth Coat, Abyssinian and Peruvian. HOUSING Choose a well constructed branded hutch. The hutch must be weatherproof with an overhanging roof. Wooden floors should be treated with a suitable protective sealant. Doors must be kept securely fastened. An outside run with a wire top can be provided for secure free exercise. Do not allow him to run about freely indoors as he may cause damage. If you plan to keep your guinea pig indoors a range of suitable cages are available. Your pet shop will show you their range.
