Congratulations on your new pet! It's not that she's overweightlike all guineapigs, she needs a big stomach to digest all the tough plant food she eats.
http://www.animaland.org/petcare/guineapig/
Congratulations on your new pet! She's not a pig and she's not from New Guineaso read on to find out what your animal companion's all about and what she'll need to stay happy and healthy. Scientific name: Cavia porcellus
Size: Males can weigh up to three pounds, but females are smaller, usually just under a pound.
Color: Lots of variations, from brown spotted and black banded to pure golden and all-white.
Lifespan: Five to seven years
If your pig's no porker, then what is she? A guinea pig is a rodent, just like mice, rats and hamsters. She has short legs and a plump body, and a tummy that's so big her back legs have to point sideways to fit around it! It's not that she's overweightlike all guinea pigs, she needs a big stomach to digest all the tough plant food she eats. The three most common breeds of guinea pig are the smooth-coated, who has short, glossy fur; the Abyssinian, whose hair grows in fluffy tufts all over her body; and the Peruvian, who has long, silky hair that flows to the ground. Guinea pigs are social, and if you keep two or more females together, they'll become great friends. If you want two males, choose two babies from the same litterbut don't put more than two males in the same cage or they'll fight. And if you keep males and females together, have your veterinarian neuter the males and spay the females so they can't have babies.

Caring for your guinea pig
General information

Guinea pigs live on average 4-8 years. Females are sexually mature at 4-6 weeks and males at 9-10 weeks. There are usually 3-4 in a litter born after a gestation period of 59-72 days. The larger the litter, the shorter the pregnancy.
Housing
Pens should be at least 25 cm high and covered to keep cats out. Each guinea pig should have a floor area of at least 0.2 square metres (20 x 20 cm). A nestbox is not essential but plenty of bedding is important for the animals to hide in if startled. Bedding can be wood shavings, straw or shredded paper. Hay can be used and will be a useful dietary supplement but must be fresh and dry.
Feeding
A pelleted commercial food will provide a balanced basis to the diet. This may be supplemented by hay and green foods. Any change in diet should be gradual as guinea pigs are fastidious eaters and may stop altogether or have digestive disturbances. Guinea pigs need vitamin C every day and this can deteriorate in food stored for long periods.
Water must be provided at all times and guinea pigs will drink up to 100 ml daily. This is best given in bottles mounted on the side of a cage as guinea pigs may soil water in bowls.

Guinea Pig Babys Born on the 4th of July, 1998. Molly, Independence, Dawn Here's Mum peeking out from behind her babies. This time (pictured above) Jasmine's Guinea Pig had three babies on July 4, 1998. The mom's name is "Cinder". They are very cute. Here's the original guinea pig who had four babies on Jan 14, 1997. Here is the mother with four babies. Description: Guinea Pig babies are remarkable because they are born complete with fur, eyesight, and the ability to walk from birth. These babies are about 4 hours old. They look and act just like miniature grown up Guinea Pigs! Guinea Pigs get to be about 12 inches long and weigh about 2 lbs. Care and Feeding: Guinea pigs need a pellet which is higher in vitamin C than a rabbit pellet. They also enjoy lettuce, celery, oats, apples and carrots. Tomatoes and parsley make good treats. Breeding: The gestation period (the time the mom is pregnant), is 65 to 68 days. Cinder was pregnant for 67 days. There are generally 3 to 6 babies. They should stay with their mother for 6 to 8 weeks at which time they are usually weaned and can eat on their own.

Guinea Pigs
(C avia Porcellus)

Is the Guinea Pig a Pig from Guinea?
The guinea pig's native home is not Guinea and neither does it belong to the pig family! In fact, one of the guinea pig's closest relations is the chinchilla. One possible explanation is that present day guinea pigs are descended from the wild cui kept by the Incas 500 years ago. These cui were smaller than the present day guinea pigs that we see now and were eaten by the Incas on special occasions. Spanish conquistadors who landed in South America noticed that the skinned cui looked like tiny pigs and referred to them as "little Indian pigs". "Guinea" was probably added because the Spaniards took them to Guiana (also called Guinea) as a source of food on board the ship. Later, they were brought into Europe as pets in the 1700s. Today, the guinea pig or cavy is a popular pet in many parts of the world. VITAL STATISTICS

How to care for a guinea pig
A guinea pig is a friendly little animal which makes a good pet for children and adults. You will notice that at first your guinea pig runs away from you and you may be concerned that your pet doesn't like you. Guinea pigs are shy animals but with alot of patience on your part, you will eventually gain his trust and he will want your attention when ever he can get it. bodyOffer(28895) Before you go to the pet store to pick out your new pet, there are a few things that you will need to prepare for your pet ahead of time. A Home For Your New Pet Your new pet will need a house. The house that you prepare for your guinea pig is very important. It will need to have a lot of ventilation due to the fact that the ammonia that is given off by urine can make your guinea pig sick. You should never allow him to become wet. The bedding must be kept dry at all times. An all glass aquarium is not a good home for a guinea pig because there is not enough ventilation. A wire cage with a solid bottom is a good home for a guinea pig. A large bird cage with a tray that pulls out is a good home for a guinea pig as the tray can be pulled out and cleaned daily. Food For Your New Pet The main part of your guinea pig's diet will be guinea pig pellets which you can buy in your local pet store. You should have a dish of pellets in the cage at all times so the guinea pig can eat whenever he is hungry. It is a good idea to also offer him fruit or vegtables each day.Since a guinea pig requires a lot of vitamin C, turnip greens are a good choice for a treat for the guinea pig. If you do not give him fruits or vegtables you will need to give him vitamin C drops in his water bottle. You can buy these drops in the pet store.

Guinea Pigs
he guinea pig (or "cavy") is a small rodent native to the Andes Mountains of South America. They are popular as pets because of their docile temperament (they rarely bite) and relatively clean habits. Guinea pigs live an average of 5 to 6 years and range in weight from 450 to 900 grams (1 to 2 pounds). There are three basic varieties: the common shorthair, the Abyssinian, which has whorls in its haircoat, and the longhair Peruvian. All types make great pets for both children and adults. Housing Guinea pigs should be kept in cages when they are alone. The enclosure must be roomy enough to allow normal activity and at least 10 inches high. The top can be open. The flooring should be solid since wire mesh can cause foot and leg injuries. Bedding must be clean, absorbent, and dust-free. Shredded paper, wood shavings, or corncob are all suitable. Cages should have adequate ventilation and be cleaned frequently. Guinea pigs are startled by loud noises or sudden movements and may start to run or vocalize. It is best if the cage is kept in a relatively quiet area. Diet Breeding Guinea pigs reach sexual maturity as young as 5 to 10 weeks of age. Females should be bred before 7 months of age. If the first breeding occurs at an older age, serious complications with delivery can occur, and cesarean section is sometimes required to save the mother as well as her babies. An uncomplicated delivery usually requires less than 1 hour. Gestation period averages 63 days. Litter sizes can range from one to six, but three to four babies are most common. Babies are born relatively mature; they are fully haired, they have teeth, their eyes are open, and they start eating solid food within a few days. Young guinea pigs are usually weaned at 2 to 4 weeks of age.

Isoflurane requires the use of a precision vaporizer to deliver the appropriate amount of anesthetic and both require appropriate scavenging systems to prevent personnel exposure to the anesthetic. Induction will require "masking the guinea pig" or the use of an induction chamber. An endotracheal tube should be utilized to maintain anesthesia. Halothane in guinea pigs has been associated with hepatotoxicity.
