Gymnastics Special Olympics gymnastics combines strength, flexibility and artistry. Competitions are offered for men in the artistic events and women in artistic and rhythmic events. As in all Special Olympics sports, athletes are grouped in competition divisions according to their ability level, age and gender. Gymnastics is one of Special Olympics' expanding sports. Today 7,837 athletes in 80 Programs around the world train and compete in gymnastics. Women may compete in up to four events in either artistic or rhythmic competitions. The artistic events include uneven bars, the balance beam, vaulting and floor exercises. The rhythmic competition includes rope, hoop, ball and ribbon. Men may compete in up to six events in artistic gymnastics. Men's artistic events include floor exercises, pommel horse, rings, vaulting, parallel bars and the horizontal bar. For the well-rounded athlete, the all-around competition offers an additional challenge. Men and women may choose to compete in every event, which qualifies them for the all-around.
WORLD GAMES HISTORY
Special Olympics gymnastics was first included as an official sport in the 1972 World Games in Los Angeles, California, USA, in which only 11 athletes competed in tumbling and free exercise routines. By the 1999 World Games, this sport attracted 295 competitors from 41 countries.

Nemov in action on the horizontal bar
Gymnast Alexei Nemov became the leading medal winner at the Sydney Games when he took gold in the horizontal bar. The 24-year-old Russian took his haul to six, equalling his Atlanta tally four years ago. He has now taken gold in the all-around event and horizontal bar as well as silver in the floor exercise and bronze in team, pommel horse and parallel bars. "I was lucky today," Nemov said. "Actually, I cold be pleased with one gold medal, and the victory in the horizontal bar competitions is an excellent result for me. "We shall attend a reception tomorrow night, and I shall drink as much champagne as I can." Nemov captured six medals in 1996, the most of any athlete, including gold in team and vault, silver in all-around and bronzes in horizontal bar, pommel horse and floor. Hopes He was hoping four six gold medals this time around but saw his hopes go up in smoke with bronze in the team event.

Monday, 21 August, 2000, 08:37 GMT 09:37 UK Miller's Olympic dream in tatters
Seven-time Olympic medallist Shannon Miller's hopes of making the US gymnastic squad for Sydney ended in tears on Sunday when she was forced to retire injured. Miller was one of several members of the so-called "Magnificent Seven", who swept all before them at the Atlanta Games in 1996, aiming to be recalled to the team. The squad was hand picked by US coach Bela Karolyi who lead the team to victory in the Atlanta Games in 1996. Injury had already put paid to the hopes of Dominque Moceanu. Costly However, two of the Atlanta gold-winning squad will travel to Sydney. Amy Chow and Dominique Dawes were among six women named after the Olympic trials which had influence on Karolyi's decision but no binding mandate on his ultimate choice. The other four gymnasts were US champion Elise Ray, Kristen Maloney, Morgan White and Jamie Dantzscher. Two-time Olympian Miller injured her knees on the landing of her opening vault and withdrew from the competition.

Artistic The artistic discipline includes three types of competition. In team competition and all-round individual competition, gymnasts perform on each apparatus and their scores for each are combined. Just three years after the Magnificent Seven won the United States' first women's Olympic all-around title, the Americans finished last in the medals round at the world championships. Olympic competition dates: Sept. 14-26
Venues: Sydney SuperDome, Sydney Olympic Park Men are scored in seven individual events: floor, vault, pommel horse, rings, parallel bars, horizontal bar and all-around. Women are judged in five: floor, vault, uneven bars, balance beam and all-around. In awarding scores, judges take into consideration the degree of difficulty of a gymnast's program, along with aesthetic appeal. Points are deducted for such faults as poor execution, lack of control, falling, missing requirements or exceeding the time limit. The individual all-around champions are determined by totaling scores on all the apparatuses.

And, there are a whole load of them where there is a world cup (or equivalent tournament) which is more prestigious than winning the olympic title (football is a case in point).
