GYMNASTICS: Olympic champ Deferr turned in positive test
Agence France-Presse

PARIS (February 28, 2003 4:37 p.m. EST) - Olympic vault champion Gervasio Deferr of Spain showed traces of the cannabis when tested during the world artistic gymnastics championships in Debrecen, Hungary, last November, the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) confirmed.
Deferr, the first Spaniard to win an Olympic gymnastics gold in Sydney, tested positive during the Spanish championships at Vitoria on October 12.
Traces of cannabis were also detected a week later during the international tournament at Paris, and residual presence of the same substance was again found during the World Championships in Debrecen on November 23.
Deferr won the world silver medal on the floor exercise in Debrecen.
The FIG said that the gymnast relinquished his right to proceed with the analysis of the second 'B' sample and on January 20 sent a letter to the FIG, in which he acknowledged his act and expressed his regret.
"Scientifically speaking, it is possible that we are dealing with a single case, the concentration of the incriminating substance logically diminishing with time," the FIG said.

Sopper on flight that crashed into Pentagon
Associated Press
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. Mari-Rae Sopper, the women's gymnastics coach at UC Santa Barbara, was aboard one of the flights downed by terrorists. She was traveling on the American Airlines flight from Washington that crashed into the Pentagon on Tuesday, according to a list released by the airline. Gymnastics had been dropped by UCSB on Aug. 10, but was reinstated three days later for one year, and Sopper was hired as coach less than two weeks ago. School officials chose to keep the sport for one more season after the athletes complained they had not been given enough time to transfer to other schools. "We're shocked and dismayed by what has happened," UCSB athletic director Gary Cunningham said Wednesday. "Our deepest sympathies go out to her family. Mari-Rae was a very dynamic and enthusiastic person, and it is tragic that her life was cut short. We are all extremely saddened by the loss and its significance cannot be expressed in words." School spokesman Bill Mahoney said no discussions had been held concerning a replacement for Sopper, but said one will be hired.

- With hand apparatus: 84 women gymnasts will compete over 4 days in singles and team events.
- Trampoline: 84 men and women gymnasts will compete for 2 days in this singles event.
