PJC Gymnastics offers professional gymnastics instruction to students in Pensacola and the surrounding communities. The classes are offered to students ages 18 months through adult. The main focus of the program is to teach students gymnastics in a safe and positive environment. PJC takes pride in the small classes thus offering more individual instruction and a safer atmosphere. Today the program offers over 25 preschool classes and more than 40 classes for students in the first grade and above.
The Mommy and Me classes are designed for children 18 months through two and a half years old and their parents. The main focus of the class is to teach the children in a positive, safe and, "mommy-secure" environment. The students work on eye-hand coordination, motor skills, strength, agility, and body awareness with the aid of their parents. The equipment used is smaller and designed especially for preschoolers. At the present time, PJC offers three Mommy and Me classes that are one hour long and meet one day a week.
Tiny Tumblers Classes
The Tiny Tumblers classes are designed for children three and four years of age with a student/teacher of 6:1. The focus of the class is a positive learning experience while working on basic motor skills, eye-hand coordination, strength, agility, and beginning gymnastics skills. The children work on all the gymnastics equipment, which is lowered for their height, as well as spcecially designed preschool equiptment. At the present time, PJC offers ten Tiny Tumblers classes that meet for one hour, one day a week.

Understanding the basic body positions is a requirement to learning good quality tumbling elements. These introductory elements and shapes are the “cookie batter” of gymnastics and must be taught to gymnasts with exact technique. Kelly brings you to these exacting techniques through instruction, demonstrations with young gymnasts, and drills designed to assist with the teaching of these skills. Body control and form enables a gymnast to perform safe and correct skills, which will determine the future elements a gymnast will be able to learn. Any new gymnastics coaches and instructors should have complete understanding of the techniques provided on this video. A Progression for Teaching the Stalder Handstand by John Wojtczuk
North Stars Gymnastics Academy, NJ
The Stalder The key here is the technique of the entry into the skill, what has been called a "late drop." There was also a study by Gord Osbourne (University of Alberta) in Canada that compared the two techniques on entering into the Stalder for men's horizontal bar, and indicates that biomechanically the late drop was a better technique. It was watching the Stalder HS/toe HS sequence that was key for me. The absolute similarity of the drop for the two skills gave me the ideas for these progressions, and a key to performing the skill well. The advantage of the "late drop" is that it forces the maximum extension away (for swing) from the bar with the best control. It parallels the drop from a HS for a clearhip circle or glide kip, so there is some "carry-over" from those skills. On page 17 is a chart to show a possible progression for teaching the Stalder.
The First Line of Drills
Now let's take the top line of the chart. The first step from left to right are the flexibility requirements for this skill, an excellent pike and straddle compression. The lower back may be susceptible to strains if not stretched well. There will be a good amount of force stretching the lower back at the "bottom" of the circle, so excellent lower back flexibility is as important as leg and hip flexibility to "get into" the proper straddle position to perform the skill. The second element over is a specific "strength" drill for the last phase of the skill–the HS. Using a floor bar, first straddle press HS with the feet behind the bar. Later on, the feet will be placed slightly "in front" of the bar with the hands having to reach slightly between the legs and under the body to press to the HS, partially simulating one of the opening techniques for the Stalder.

Technical Preparation for the Back Stalder and Late Toe-On by John Wojtczuk
North Stars Gymnastics Academy, NJ
Backward Stalder Circle
(Note: The late toe-on is an excellent progression to teach this drop for stalders. I would strongly suggest teaching a good late toe on first.) Prerequisites : all from late toe-on, plus: Flexibility : Pike and straddle Compressions requires good hamstring and lower back flexibility; proper position of shoulders in HS; proper position of back in a press HS. Strength : V-ups, crunchers, leg lifts (piked and stradled), abdominal curls, "V"-hang on low bar, straddle press to HS, slow pike down from HS, sitting pike and straddle "leg-raises". Drills : "Rock" on parallettes to feel the shoulders opening as the hips flex into the drop Piked and straddled "basket" swings. Straddle and piked sole and seat circles around the bar. Jump from floor to pike sole circle off, and around– increase height of starting surface to the same; add a late straddle through to a stalder "rock" and return; then to around the bar and then progressively working up to a straddled HS. Common Errors : "Straddling" on top of the bar (early entry) before the COG has started to fall back into the circle. Not compressing deep enough to stay in position at the "bottom" of the swing (coming out too soon); not keeping shoulders over the bar to control the body shape into the drop.

The Evening Star Brain Gym:   Tumbling Helps! Most people can see how gymnastics enhances the physical attributes of children.  Many may not be aware of how the perceptual motor activities used in gymnastics help develop efficient learners.    Gymnastics uses many modalities that teach static balance, space and time awareness, vestibule integration, hand-eye coordination, jumping and sequencing, directionality, bilateral integration, and unilateral integration.  These basic perceptual-motor patterns underlie the advanced capacities involved in learning such things as reading, wring and math as well as comprehension, organization and focusing skills.    Last, but certainly not least, the skills that we teach play a major part in body mastery.  A child's first concept of themselves is that of their body.  If they are pleased with what their body is able to do, their self-esteem rockets!     More about the kinesiology-neurobiology connection in the upcoming newsletters. Precision Gymnastics Preschool
In our classes, children work on circuits. Eight students maximum per group. Circuits are small gymnastics obstacle courses designed for each event. During the class the children will perform on one circuit and move on to the next. Along with gymnastics, the children are learning how to cooperate, behave with their peers and respond to authority. Children progress at their own pace. Basic gymnastics skills are taught to each child's capability with the emphasis on fun!
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did my child skip a station?
As you know, children do have minds of their own and sometimes choose to skip a station within a circuit. We do encourage the children to try everything. There may be reasons that vary from day to day why they skip a station. We never force a child to participate. There is no reason to pressure a child into doing a station. Chances are when they see the other children having fun doing the station they will join in. So be patient and most of the time the child will choose to do the station, and if not, that's okay. Let them enjoy the journey on route to success. How come my child can't do that?

Turn-teach Gymnastics Lecture Notes
During the EY turn-teach gymnastics lecture a number of issues raised in the turn-teach games lecture arose, the following additional observations were made:
  • When you ask the children to demonstrate their work make sure the demonstration serves a purpose - try to avoid having demonstrations simply for the sake of filling time! Make sure if you give a demonstration it is the best you can do - sloppy demonstrations often lead to sloppy work from the children eg. don't allow running with arms folded, hands in pockets etc... Pinpoint what it is you want the children to observe during the demonstration and ask questions to check that they have observed it eg. before demo ......... "I want you to watch my legs carefully as I jump and land" after demo............ "who can tell me what happened to my legs as I landed?" etc..... If a demonstration is performed well by the child(ren) - tell the class why you liked it ie. reinforce the quality of work you desire through demonstration. If you are making specific reference to safety aspects on the apparatus, then these instructions should be given immediately prior to when the children are about to start their work. Thus, safety instructions are 'fresh in their minds' at the time of performance.

Good Practice Underpinning
Early Years Gymnastics
  • starting point is to look at what actions the children can already do when they start school eg. roll, slide, jump, walk, run, climb, crawl, balance - in so doing, the children can achieve a level of success from the outset the children should be taught to recognise these movements and put a name to them (and also body parts) ie. learn the language of movement skills (reception) children then apply these skills in different contexts (Year 1) all children must be given the opportunity to explore, select and practise these basic actions therefore set challenging open-ended tasks that allow the children to respond at their own level eg. instruction starts as, ‘find a way of.......’ when they are ready, teach them specific skills, broadening their movement vocabulary make the children aware of the surrounding space ( spatial awareness ) and how this can be used emphasise controlled and safe use of the body , without removing the challenging aspects of gymnastics - teach awareness of safety issues encourage them to link movements into simple sequences (Year 2) exercise the body, so that children strengthen muscles, maintain flexibility and build up stamina
