http://www.aaksports.com/ChampionGymnastics/Programs/Recreational.htm
Recreational Programs From the beginner to the advanced, we have it all! The Shining Stars Program is based on the developmental curriculum of the USA Gymnastics program. Each class level is specifically designed to meet all the needs of our young athletes. We start with the basics in order to lay a good, solid foundation to build upon. The skills that our kids learn in the Shining Stars program are more than just gymnastics skills. We teach skills that will carry our kids through life. Most children will reach less than FUN doing it as well!
The very beginner level class. We introduce students to body positions and the very basics of gymnastics on all four apparatus. We work forward and backward rolls, teach cartwheels, handstands, basic beam skills, and beginning level bars skills.
This class works on cartwheels (both sides), backward/forward rolls, bridge kickovers, vault approach, and spring board take-off. On beam they work on different walks, jumps, and turns. On bars students gain upper body and stomach strength needed for mastering the pullover and upper level skills. The Red Stars level emphasizes correct body positions, strength, and flexibility. Blue Stars
Silver Stars

Again, Silver Stars emphasizes proper body positions and form on each skill. The main Silver Stars skills are backbend kickovers, handstands (holding them!), handstand forward rolls, pullovers, casts, back hip circles, sole circle dismounts, squat-on vaults, and correct landing positions. We will do pivot turns on beam along with scales, more advanced turns, levers, rolls, and cartwheels. Strength, flexibility, and dance skills are included.

The why and how of teaching gymnastics effectively
DESCRIPTION
In Teaching Children Gymnastics author Peter Werner shows that gymnastics is more than teaching skills—it's also a fun way to teach body management and challenge individual students' skills. This book combines traditional Olympic-style skills with the developmental approach of educational gymnastics and explains the why and how of teaching gymnastics effectively to children in pre-K through Grade 6. Part I defines developmentally appropriate gymnastics, explains why it is an important part of a physical education curriculum, presents principles for teaching developmentally appropriate gymnastics, and presents methods for assessing psychomotor, cognitive, and affective development. Part II breaks down the content of gymnastics into three skill themes: • Traveling • Statics • Rotation Within each skill theme the book presents eight activities (Learning Experiences) arranged in order of difficulty, from simple to complex. These 24 Learning Experiences are practical, child-tested examples of how to teach gymnastics in a variety of environments and situations. Teachers will appreciate that each Learning Experience includes ideas for changing the level of difficulty. A gymnastics report card, award certificate, and task cards are also provided.

What a child wears to class is extremely important in a gymnastics class. Many times, teachers must "spot" (hold) your child as they learn new gymnastic skills. On some skills, two spotters are required.
Students must wear, snug fitting dance/exercise apparel, so that these spotters can hold your child safely and securely. Big baggy cover-ups or layers of clothing are not suitable. Boys shirts should be snug fitting and of a style that will not pull out of pants easily. Girls wear footless tights for class, and tan stirrup tights for performance. All students will need tan suede sand-a-soles shoes for performance. AT ADA WE TEACH THREE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF GYMNASTICS

Comments from people who have read this book Rating: /5 - Rating: 4/5 - A good guidebook. This looks like it will be very helpful for my daughter. She takes gymnastics classes, but with this book she can also work on skills at home, on her mat. (Her MAT, Ninjahawk, not the carpet! Carpeting is not designed for learning front-handsprings, unless you have high hopes of breaking your neck.) It shows and describes a nice variety of skills. My only complaint is that it covers skills for both girls and boys, so much of the content (rings/pommel horse/paralell bars) is useless. Perhaps they would have done better to have produced separate books for girls and boys gymnastics. Rating: 5/5 - Great for Learning Basic Gymnastics Skills!!

Companion Website Introduction
Gymnastic Skills
SUMMARY
Gymnastic activities make a significant contribution to the overall physical education experience for children in elementary schools. Gymnastic activities develop body management skills without the need for equipment and apparatus. Flexibility, agility, balance, strength, and body control are outcomes that are enhanced through participation in gymnastics. Specialized motor skills such as body rolling, balance skills, inverted balances, and tumbling skills are learned through these activities. Various partner and group activities offer opportunity for social interaction and cooperation. Positive learning experiences in gymnastic activities are dependent on progression. When teaching activities, developing a positive attitude and overcoming personal limitations is more important than performing with perfect technique. Safety is foremost in the gymnastic program. STUDENT OUTCOMES Upon completion of the reading of this chapter, the student will:
  • List progressions and developmental level placements for gymnastic activities.

Welcome to the DIPPER PROGRAMS Pre-School Gym Class Schedule Staff
WHY DO I WANT TO ENROLL MY CHILD IN PRE-SCHOOL GYMNASTICS?
G ymnastics is fun and fundamental for developing better kids! Child development experts agree that for pre-schoolers, acquiring healthy learning attitudes is far more important than the mastery of specific skills. We know that gymnastics training will serve as the tools to teach learning attitudes. We make learning fun! What better gift is there for your child?
FUN IS FAR MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE
As we said, one of the objectives of the Dipper program is fun. Of course this is wonderful for their children but parents often think that if their children are having fun then learning can’t be happening. Nothing could be farther from the truth. When fun is present learning comes naturally. Each week our teachers present your child with a series of challenges that will teach them the skills they are trying to learn in the real world: Following directions, waiting their turn in line, colors, numbers, shapes, and sizes.

By Val Sabin (2001)
A fully comprehensive teaching manual full of interesting and exciting lesson material presented in a progressive and developmental structure enables school gymnastics to be easily and fully implemented for Key Stages 3 and 4 of the National Curriculum. It provides the "what" "how" and "when" to teach gymnastics in a stimulating, practical and detailed manner and follows on naturally from the author's teaching manual for Key Stages 1 and 2. Lesson structure, principles of teaching gymnastics to this age group, useful techniques for making the most of available apparatus and a simple meaningful system for assessment and recording are some of the essential areas covered. The major part of the manual comprises lesson material in 11 very detailed and progressive units of work organised in a way which enables the teacher to select the most appropriate phases of development of difficulty to match the expertise of a class. There are masters of over 160 original work cards to aid extension and differentiation in the class situation and a comprehensive section on how to teach individual gymnastic skills by breaking them down into progressive stages.

If your child gets bored, stop the activity and resume it later. Make sure your child stays well-hydrated, and try to not direct or correct everything he or she does. Set up the activities so that if there's a mess, it's not a big deal. Go swimming. Go fly a kite. Go as a family, or bring some friends and have a kite-flying contest. Give prizes for the highest kite, the goofiest, the most beautiful, the scariest. Go to the drive-in. You can find a drive-in near you at http://www.driveintheater.com/index.htm or at http://www.drive-ins.com Have your friends and neighbors over for a block fair. You can have potato sack races, watermelon eating contests, horseshoe pits and other cool games. Do a science project together. Plant flowers; catch lightning bugs, moths or harmless millipedes (let them go after an hour or so); build an ant farm; build a bird house or butterfly nest; go birding; track the weather; build a dam in a river (make sure the water level is low and that you don't leave your child unsupervised); go camping and teach skills in navigation, star gazing, fire-building, emergency, knot tying, food storage, water sanitation, and animal tracking.
