CLUB PROFILE:
CAN-AM GYMNASTICS
By Rick McCharles
Can-Am was founded in 1979 by Rick Yano and his wife Mary. The current head coach is Doug Hillis who is concentrating on golf and tennis while taking care of 3 young children in Australia where he has accompanied his wife, Dr. Karen Chad, while on a 12 month sabbatical. I've stepped in while Doug is gone as the interim head coach. This puts me in a unique position to report on Can-Am in comparison with the dozens of clubs I've visited across Canada and even internationally in my role as a Gymnastics Canada Master Coaching Course Conductor. The club registers more than 350 members each year, and employs a full-time Head Coach, a part-time Assistant Head Coach/Recreation Director and a part-time Club Administrator. The Can-Am Gymnastics Club operates out of the Field House at the University of Saskatchewan. Can-Am has a large facility (over 10,000 sq ft) providing quality gymnastics all year around. It is an unusual, even off-putting at first glance, training facility. Housed in the Mezzanine, the facility is very long and narrow. In practice, however, I've found the gym an excellent training facility. The arrangement allows for good traffic flow. The most interesting and unique aspect of Can-Am is the philosophy of the competitive program. They really live the club mission statement - to provide an opportunity for gymnasts of all levels of ability in a safe and positive training environment. Can-Am is committed to the whole athlete, to the psychological and physical well-being of every child.

You Are Your Child's First Teacher
by Rahima Baldwin Dancy The importance of what our children learn in the home and through their relationship with us forms the irreplaceable foundation of all that comes later. Mother, childbirth educator, midwife, and Waldorf educator, Baldwin aims to deepen our understanding of the nature of the young child as a whole beingbody, mind, emotions, and spiritso enabling us to meet their needs for balanced development. It is Baldwin's sensitive, sincere, and ever-so-natural tending to the soul and spirit, as well as mind and body, of the newborn and young child, that makes this a very special book. In a society which values intellectual development above all else, we tend to ignore other aspects of development. We reason with our children as if they were grown ups and teach them with techniques appropriate for much older children. Distrustful of natural processes, we believe we have to do something in order to ensure our child's development. Milestones of the first three yearswalking, talking, thinking, and memoryoccur by themselves, according to their own timetable. Trusting natural processes does not mean that we do nothing, but that the things we do need to be consonant with the child's own developmental stages. The world of the young is critically endangered, as more and more children are placed in daycare in infancy, and academic pursuits are pushed onto younger and younger children.

http://www.sasked.gov.sk.ca/docs/physed/safe/gym.html
GYMNASTICS GENERAL GUIDELINES Kindergarten to Grade 9
SUPERVISION KINDERGARTEN TO GRADE 9
The Basic Movement Pattern (BMP) approach to gymnastics used in the Saskatchewan physical education curriculum is such that safety considerations are built into the program. By teaching landings - one of the basic movement patterns - teachers prevent injuries. Many injuries that occur in a gymnastics context - and in other physical activities - are the result of landing incorrectly. Teach students how to land safely in a variety of situations and have students practice landings regularly so they are learned to the point of becoming reflex reactions. Spotting - manual assistance provided to participants while performing skills on the floor or on equipment - is not appropriate in the elementary gymnastics program. Many gymnastics injuries are the result of attempting skills that students are not ready to perform. If the student needs spotting, this is a good indication that the student lacks the necessary physical or motor skills. Rather than have the student attempt the skill with a "spot", more activities that lead up to the skill can be provided. Not only does this approach prevent the tendency for students to become dependent on a spotter, it reflects the reality that in a large group setting the teacher cannot spot all the students. Mat work comes before use of equipment. A teacher who is unfamiliar with any gymnastics equipment can seek assistance from appropriate support staff and/or refrain from using the equipment until help is received.

http://www.rochesterschool.org/pages/school/2001pages/mcloughlin/
Greetings, my name is Kathleen Mcloughlin! Welcome to my Rural Gymnastics web page. Gymnastics used to be my favorite hobby in Elementary school. When the chance arose to teach gymnastics in a rural VTschool, I thought it was a super idea, and I knew I couldn't pass up the opportunity. Every Tuesday and Thursday my mentor (Bob Long) and I met with the Hancock children, and we worked on specific things. Each day it would get harder, and as a result, the children improved on their skills. Then I started working on my senior paper, which was about bad coaching hurting a gymnast mentally, and physically, but also about the good aspects of coaching. Senior Project was a great opportunity, and even though I was really scared to begin this project, I'm really glad that I had the chance to teach gymnastics. It was fun, however I know now that I would like to peruse a different subject when I enter college. Click here for more pictures
