    THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE
Six years ago, long before becoming Connecticut state champion, a three-year qualifier to the U.S. Junior Olympics and a two-year International Elite qualifier, Kristen Riffanacht's No. 1 goal was to earn a college gymnastics scholarship.
If we knew then what we know now about the University of Utah freshman from Cheshire, Conn., all a full college ride would have required was a letter of intent and a signature.
Riffanacht (pronounced riff-in-ack), a self-proclaimed workaholic, sets goals and is almost scientific in achieving them.
"Setting a goal has always worked for me," she said. "I learned very early that I had to go the extra mile to have that extra edge."
That work ethic which, said Ute coach Greg Marsden, extends to the film room, where Riffanacht breaks down videos of her performances to find areas where she can improve has enabled her to become a three-event performer for Utah as a freshman.

    Tumble Bear Preschool Gymnastics Program

This is a movement education program that uses basic gymnastics skills and positions to teach balance, coordination, confidence, and motor skill development in a progressive format. Obstacle courses, games, balls, hoops, and parachute are just some of the fun activities incorporated into the classes. The preschool gymnastics program includes the following classes: Toddler Bears for walking to 3 years old, Rock'n'Bears for 3 to 4 year olds, Super Bears 1 for 4 to 5 year olds, and Super Bears 2 for advanced 5 to 6 year olds. Please see the class descriptions for each of these classes. School Age Instructional Level Program
A typical one-hour class features 10-15 minutes of structured warm-up that includes exercises for improving flexibility, strength, and endurance; approximately 40 minutes of apparatus and tumbling work, and five minutes of conditioning at the end of class. Periodically, various games are added for fun. Children will be grouped according to their ages and skill levels during the first day of class.
  • 86. Gleason's: Why Gymnastics?
gymnastics offers the teacher tremendous opportunity to teach listening and socialskills. A good gymnastic program is structured around the above ideas.
    http://www.gleasons.com/Pages/WhyGym.html
    Why Gymnastics?
Is your child going to be a gymnastic star in future Olympic games?
Maybe - but probably not. If not, why should they have gymnastic training? The fact that children naturally find gymnastics to be "loads" of fun may be sufficient cause for some parents to have their child in a gym program but other parents may seek more justification for their expenditure of time and money.
While few children become advanced gymnasts, all children will attend school and many (hopefully all) will participate in some form of athletics. Educators tell us that children's success in school and athletics is strongly influenced by earlier experiences that help to shape a child's self-concept. Children need positively reinforcing experiences that will help them to believe that they can solve problems and that they can have control over their lives. Very young children can also benefit from successful social interaction; learning to interact with their peers; learning to be in a class; listening and following directions. A child who has developed a strong sense of confidence and self-esteem, and who also can relate well to others, is going to approach future situations with confidence and a good chance of success.
A good gymnastic program is structured around the above ideas. The sport of gymnastics can be used as a vehicle to enhance children's adaptation to both academics and sports. It is important to learn the movement concepts involved in a skill as well as learning the skill. Most important, each child must experience a maximum of success and a minimum of failure! The focus should be on the development of self-esteem rather than skill acquisition. Not all children can perform a given skill well, but they can all learn to feel good about what they can do.

    http://www.funandfit.com/gym/benefits.htm
Where EVERY child is a winner! Educational Programs How Gymnastics Builds Self-esteem In Children
By Jeff Lulla, President Gymnastics instructors have a tremendous influence on young children in their care. While some children feel comfortable from the start, many others enter their first gymnastics class questioning their abilities to succeed, or even be safe in this strange place called the "gym". How can we as parents and instructors teach these children is at least as important as what we teach. We are more than educators. We are more than role models. We are like artists working with clay - molding something beautiful and fragile. Great care must be taken to assure that fear, difficulties and failures are dealt with positively and constructively. We recognize that childhood experiences that encourage and nurture thinking, self-trust and autonomy are to be valued. As teachers we can help to foster success by challenging children within their ability to succeed. And, since it is the nature of competition to produce more losers than winners, the teaching environment should be noncompetitive. In place of competition, a culture of cooperation and reward for self-improvement is fostered. Everyone can win only when winning is defined as "your personal best" instead of "being better than everyone else".

" A series of stunts that are presented to students in a more formal, and developmentally appropriate manner." "Stunt gymnastics that is judged in some manner by official judges, audiences or teachers." " Focus is placed on skills and sequences performed on the major, traditional pieces of equipment (e.g. beam, bars, floor, etc.). All students, regardless of body type or skill level, are judged and held to the same standards." " Olympic gymnastics " Developmental Gymnastics : " A sequential list of skills having common neuromuscular elements and representing an ever more complex form of the same general type of movement. " " Gymnastics aimed at developing reasonable and modest skills of a gymnastic nature suitable for the kind of body one has."
