    Examining What Matters
From the evening of September 21 through the morning of September 24, seventy-some attendees at the Twelfth Annual Meeting of the ExxonMobil Foundation/NCTM K-5 Mathematics Specialists engaged in meaningful and sustained conversation as they examined issues pertinent to children's mathematical understanding and participated in activities relevant to their own thinking about mathematics. Held this year at the corporation's impressive Downstream Headquarters in Fairfax, Virginia, the meeting afforded participants opportunities to share ideas among themselves, presenters and ExxonMobil employees in a unique and comfortable setting. Everyone agreed that ExxonMobil was a gracious and perfect host, providing outstanding lodging, food, meeting space, and arrangements. In this issue, you'll find summaries of presentations given by Ruth Parker and Patty Lofgren; Deborah Ball and Hyman Bass; Tom Carpenter and Megan Loef Franke; and Doug Clements and Vicki Bachman. Remarks from addresses by ExxonMobil Foundation President Ed Ahnert and by NCTM President Lee Stiff are noted in these pages along with an account of Sunday morning's informal conversation with Lee Stiff, Doug Clements and Skip Fennell. Also included are reports from participants' perspectives on Thursday's two concurrent presessions—one led by Virginia Bastable, Deborah Schifter and Jill Bodner-Lester and the other by Skip Fennell. Summaries of Friday's breakout sessions led by Sherry Beard, Susan O'Boyle, Carol Brooks and Casilda Pardo may be found here, along with a report on the listserv session hosted by Holli Aflatouni and Anne Herndon. There's also an account of the lunch conversations at the "birds-of-a-feather" tables organized by Christopher Kribs-Zaleta and Virginia Bastable.

Albums we recently reviewed that we like a whole lot... (There's nothing here that wasn't on the front page, by the way, but these records are too fine to age off, so I put them here.) Reviews written by John (JM) or Nathan (ND) Kimya Dawson I'm Sorry Sometimes I'm Mean
This record makes me really happy for all kinds of reasons. The record's title is pretty apt. You probably already know this, but she's the lady from the Moldy Peaches, which is kind of a mean group. Not mean-spirited, but a lot of the stuff they record hinges on anger, snottiness, and smart-alecky behavior. None of those things are bad, but the title of Dawson's solo record lets you know, right off the bat, that it's going to be hitting you from a different angle. But, then again, I don't think she's seeking to apologize for the Moldy Peaches, and she shouldn't. So, this thing where I'm talking about what the title means? I think I should stop that, because I'm obviously wrong. So. In a lot of ways, it's really different than a Moldy Peaches record. But all the good things about Ms. Dawson's contribution to the band are represented here. Her voice, for one, which is breathy and honest and just sounds kind and vulnerable to me. It's a voice you want to hug and protect. To go thrifting with. To rent Patrick Swayze movies with just to mock them.

Tuesday, July 31, 2001 I know my sister wouldn't want me to discuss it any more than I already have, but she's had cancer already, and is showing signs that might indicate a relapse. As in, large painful lumps. Obviously, that's why I'm mad at my mom for dragging her feet on taking care of it, and also the reason I'm rushing around to do something about it myself. In fact, I probably won't be posting tomorrow since I have to take Faith to get that checked in the afternoon and all.
But one thing's clear in my search for a new doctor for her, and that's that I will never, ever, take her to the place my insurance provider recommended. In fact, I think I'll try and avoid the University of Michigan health care system as much as possible, in fact. Not that they aren't competent, but I'm not so sure they care about "boring" everyday problems. Oh, big and newsworthy things that get the doctor and University attention, sure. But just try getting an appointment to check on something as mundane as breast cancer.
I did. I spent an hour on the phone with U of M's local family health care center yesterday, in fact, as their staff tried to go through the simple task of making an appointment. Good thing I decided to try calling from work instead of walking in on my lunch break, I suppose. And finally, after about 50 minutes, I had my appointment... except that instead of finishing giving me the info, I heard an argument on the other end of the phone. They were arguing over whether this was an "emergency" or not the female receptionist was quite adamant that it was (kudos to her for having common sense), and whatever female doctor she was talking to was pretty adamant that it wasn't (where they dug her up, I can only imagine if it were a male doctor I wouldn't have been surprised).

    NATIONAL CHAMPIONS

An Inside Glimpse At Oklahoma Women's Gymnastics With Assistant Coach Nilson Savage October 31, 2002
    - Our gymnastics family would like to welcome all of you to SoonerSports.com and what promises to be another great season for our Sooners. This weekly report will summarize the progress of our team throughout the preseason and 2003 schedule. Although the Sooners fell short of qualifying for the National Championships last year, the team came back with a vengeance in preparation for this season. The addition of six outstanding newcomers (five freshmen and one sophomore) has brought a new life to our group. Since the beginning of official practices three week ago, head coach Steven Nunno has the team training in the morning and practicing in the afternoon. "Our team has gelled quickly and bonded well," said Nunno. "This was unexpected because half of our team is new. Our practices have been going well. Most of our gymnasts have already learned new skills or combinations, which keeps the morale high. We are looking forward to facing eight of the top 12 teams from last season in what is one of the most ambitious schedules in the country and likely the toughest in OU history." Up to now we were concentrating on upgrading our skill level on every event. This week we are moving skills from the resi pit to the floor and getting our half routines together. We hope to have everyone's routines set on these events by the time we have an intrasquad battle in early November. On beam we have improved tremendously from where we were last year. Nine out of 12 gymnasts have added a triple series to their beam routine. The focus has switched now to trying to get double back dismounts from the top competitors. Assistant coach Jenny Rowland expects big things from the team on beam, especially considering OU lost only one competitor on the event from last season.

    #19 Haircut Trauma
You notice the person who sits next to you at work has been wearing a hat for the last three days. It's not even a good looking hat. They can't look anyone in the eye. This is definately someone with haircut trauma. This one goes out to everyone wearing a hat when they leave the house and leaving it on at work. We've been there. Thunk #18 is available here Love Thy Hairdresser In this season of love, honor and trust, few relationships remain as important or need as much nurturing as the one you have with your hairstylist. It is as difficult to maintain as an old marriage but can be as exhilarating as a new love affair. Hairstylists have the power to give you a killer cut or crappy hack job so you build a foundation of trust based on the their skillfulness and an understanding that you will leave the chair looking fabulous. So when I asked for short in the back, long in the front and despite my efforts to explain, including the visual presentation of magazine clippings get the opposite... well, it’s simply time to start looking for a new lover for my hair. The process of finding a new hairstylist requires about as much political maneuvering and military savvy as orchestrating a coup de tat. And once you leave, you must make a clean break because you can never go back. You can try, but she will always be able to tell when you’ve been to another hairstylist, they know before you even get in the chair. And once you’re caught, you’re toast. "So, who cut your hair?" she’ll ask. "Huh?" you may reply in the hopes of delaying the inevitable response to her question. "I just asked you who cut your hair," she’ll ask you again. And never doubt that she will ask again. "Oh, um, you did." you say desperately. "No, this is not my work. I give good hair cuts." You’ve been caught. There is no way out of the hair trap, try as you might. You must beg forgiveness and promise never to cheat on her again and maybe in time you both can heal from this infidelity.

Sport Development NewsMakers First Wave: Athlete Services Whitfield rises to the challenge! Simon Whitfield loves a challenge. And he rarely meets one he can't conquer. So when he read last week "that Simon Whitfield had never won in Edmonton, I figured I had better fix that." He did just that Sunday, running away from training partner Greg Bennett in the final two kilometres to win the World Cup triathlon in an impressive one hour, 49 minutes and seven seconds. "I've always said, and I still believe it, Simon Whitfield is probably the most talented athlete in the world that I've seen," said Bennett, Whitfield's training partner for the last two years and silver medallist Sunday in 1:49.18. Hamish Carter of New Zealand finished third in 1:49.44. Bennett gave Whitfield, the 26-year-old Olympic gold medallist from Victoria, a tough battle until the final few minutes. Whitfield was well back after the 1,500-metre swim, but after two big groups of cyclists merged into one huge group for most of the 40-kilometre ride, he sat back in the pack waiting for the 10-kilometre run, his strength. "Once I hit the run and we were running hard, I knew I had as good a chance as anyone," said Whitfield.

An Inside Glimpse At Oklahoma Women's Gymnastics With Assistant Coach Nilson Savage Archives
March 14 March 11 March 5 November 14 ... October 31 March 14, 2003 The following is a Inside Glimpse entry from assistant coaches Nilson Savage and Jenny Rowland, covering the day-by-day activities on the Sooners recent west coast road swing. We arrived late into Tucson, Arizona. The flight was just fine and the bus ride from Phoenix to Tucson was pretty short. We got to the hotel at 2:30 in the morning. The girls slept in and had a late breakfast. We ended up having to check out early due to the spring break rush in Ariz. Patricia Aoki, Meredith Fricke and Erin LaBarr went down stairs for some coffee and ended up getting stuck in the elevator for a little more than an hour. Nilson finally came to the rescue and threatened to call the fire dept if the girls were not out in the next 5 minutes. The maintenance worker finally crawled through the shaft and released the door and the girls came out unharmed. (They ended up drinking their coffee through a straw through the crack of the door thanks to Leah and Christy!) After the drama at the hotel, we left to find a Chili's to have lunch before the meet. After a nice meal, we headed to the competition where we had a pretty rough warm up. With everything going wrong that day, the competition ended up being the best meet of the season. We broke Oklahoma records for bars, beam and team score, with a final of 197.725. We could not have asked for a better perfomance out of our girls. They seemed to be having a great time out there on the floor as well. What big hearts they have.
