Writing Grips
Several grips are suitable for writing. Three efficient grips are shown below. Allow students to experiment and choose the one that feels best.
This is the adapted tripod grip.
This is the quadrupod grip.
This is the more traditional tripod grip.
First Writing Tools
To begin actual writing, first use crayons, then introduce markers, and eventually, use pencils for writing activities. Even after letting students write with pencils, allow them to take tests with crayons or markers. Any time you begin a new writing skill, initially teach the skill with crayons.
Young children have difficulty seeing the light blue lines found on commercial notebook paper. Purchase tactile paper with dark, raised lines. See resources that are listed under Store (homepage). You may also want to fold paper along a line to give a tactile as well as a visual reference for writing.
Ready to Write
Kindergarten or first grade teachers use finger plays, songs, and games to help students get ready for fine motor activities. If you teach an older student who is not yet developmentally ready for fine motor skills, ask the student to use a hole punch to strengthen and develop hand muscles.
Quills, the original writing pens, established the hand grip used today. We actually should place the pencil between the first two fingers with the thumb underneath. Avoid large, fat pencils, even for young children.

Homework Philosophy
Regular school attendance is among the most critical factors contributing to student success in school. While our faculty is willing to work hard with students who must be absent, there are some experiences which simply cannot be made up. In addition, there is no replacement for the interaction, correction, redirection and encouragement which occurs "live" in the classroom every day. Help us help your student by ensuring punctual attendance. We believe homework is an extension of lessons taught. Teachers will generally not make homework assignments on a daily basis. Homework may be given when a student has difficulty with an academic concept, has not completed daily assignments in class, for extra credit, or as a supplement to the curricula. Students have the responsibility for getting assignments in on time. Students who are absent from school will be expected to make up work missed in class. This work will be assigned after a student returns to school. Teachers plan lessons and design assignments on a daily basis to correspond with students accomplishments and mastery of skills; therefore, preparing packets of materials prior to the day of classroom instruction is difficult. Please do not request work to be taken on vacation. Appropriate time (2 days for every day absent) will be provided for students to complete make-up work after they have returned.
Teachers will:

Note: Any prices given are approximate Before choosing resources, know where your child is in his fine motor skill development. Then you will know what skills he needs to work on next and be better able to choose the resources you need. This pamphlet includes ideas of what to do while you are waiting for fine motor muscles to develop. It also gives suggestions for teaching handwriting What to Look for in a Handwriting Program:
    • Simple pages that are not cluttered
    • Many letters are one stroke (manuscript letters can be very confusing as to what side to place the ball and stick.)
    • Many families want to use a handwriting font that is the same or similar to that of the other family members.
Many children with Down syndrome are able to learn to write in time. It is important to be consistent, teach carefully, and establish good habits from the beginning. Equally important is establishing a good attitude toward handwriting time. Make it a fun time to be together.

    http://www.usd.edu/~ktericks/Philosophy of Language Arts.htm
Philosophy of Language Arts I believe that listening should be taught in our classrooms. Children need to be able to listen in order to learn. All children can hear, but they need to be guided so they not only hear you talking, but also understand and respond to what the teacher is saying. Therefore I will make children aware of their listening skills. I will do this by having listening activities. I will also let children know listening is not just hearing the information, but them must construct a meaning from it and respond to it. This way the teacher will know if the students understand everything. I also want my students so know about the different types of listening. When we are doing different listening activities I will explain what type of listening we are using. Then eventually I will be able to do the activity and ask the students what type of listening we are using. I believe speaking is one of the most important parts in language arts. Speaking is how someone gets his or her first impression of you. Therefore I want my students to be able to speak clearly and confidently.
