Danielle entered our religious school for grade 2 and it was her happy experience last year along with the friendliness of Temple Beth Hillel that settled it. We welcome them this month to our congregational family. Debra, along with her occupation as quality manager at Seimans in Oakland, keeps herself busy as parent and friend with sport, yoga and aerobics as free-time activities. Carl, a consultant and web designer has a hobby-turned-business ? soap making. His soaps are sold in many bay area stores. Violin, swimming and arts and crafts keep Danielle busy. She could be seen busily crafting her challah cover at the sabbath workshop last month and is an active member of the Grade 3 class of Temple Beth Hillel's Religious school.

Happy Holidays During December, I like to teach a unit about holiday customs in the United States and other countries in the world. Listed below are some ideas! Songs Hi-Ho (tune: "Hi-ho" from Snow White Hi ho, hi ho, we hope it starts to snow The trip is long, the reindeer strong, Hi-ho, hi-ho, hi-ho, hi-ho, hi-ho Eight reindeer in a row We'll be on our way on Christmas Day Hi-ho, hi-ho! Santa (tune: "Bingo") I know a man with a long white beard And Santa is his name-o. S-a-n-t-a S-a-n-t-a S-a-n-t-a And Santa is his name-o! Extensions: You can put this song in a pocket chart. Each time you sing the "S-a-n-t-a", you can cover a letter up with the word card, "ho." So it would be: "S-a-n-t-HO", etc. The children love this.....and it helps to teach one to one correspondence in reading!! Latkes (tune: When Johnny Comes Marching Home) The latkes are frying in the pan, hooray, hooray! The latkes are frying in the pan, hooray, hooray! And when they're done, so nice and brown

    Annie's Hanukkah Page
    Celebrated November 30th -December 7th, 2002
~Actually begins at sunset on November 29th~ Hanukkah , pronounced HAH nu kah, is the Jewish Feast of Lights or Feast of Dedication. The Hebrew word hanukkah (also written Hannuka; Hanukah or Chanukah) means dedication. The Hanukkah holiday begins on the eve of the 25th day of the Hebrew month of Kislev (approximately December) and lasts eight days.
During Hanukkah, gifts are exchanged and contributions made to the poor. On the first evening, one candle is lighted in a special eight-branched candelabrum called a menorah or hanukkiyah. Beginning on the second night, one candle is added every night until the total reaches eight on the last night. The candles are lighted by a separate candle called a shamash.
The two books of Maccabees in the Apocrypha tell the story of Hanukkah. In 165 B.C., after a three-year struggle led by Judah Maccabee , the Jews in Judea defeated the Syrian tyrant Antiochus IV. They held festivities in the Temple in Jerusalem, and dedicated it to God.
According to the Talmud, written many centuries after the event, when the Jews cleaned the Temple of Syrian idols, they found only one small cruse of oil with which to light their holy lamps. But miraculously, the cruse provided them with oil for eight days. Other sources tell of a torchlight parade in the Temple, which may also have contributed to the tradition of lighting candles on Hanukkah.

    WHEN MINDY SAVED HANUKKAH
When Mindy Saved Hanukkah is a delightful new book from the pen of Eric A. Kimmel (author of the Caldecott Honor Book Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins ). Part heroic adventure and part history lesson, When Mindy Saved Hanukkah introduces readers to the Klein family, a Borrowers-like family that resides inside the walls of an historic synagogue. When a "fierce Antiochus of a cat" foils Papa's attempt to land a large candle from which he plans to fashion nine smaller candles for the family's menorah what is the family to do? One of the young Klein's Mindy has a plan. The other family members bestow good luck charms on the little girl, and Mindy is off! She climbs through a crack at the bottom of the wall and slips into the sanctuary.

Use Holiday Season to Teach Cultural Diversity
    By Jinny Gudmundsen
Published on December 27th, 2002 During this holiday season, in between family get-togethers and traditional celebrations, consider using the Internet to broaden your child’s awareness of holidays other than the one your family celebrates. Here are two sites that can help teach about holiday diversity.
    Choosing Children's Software
    History Channel.com
    www.historychannel.com/exhibits/holidays/main.html

The History Channel reviews the holidays of Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa. It explains the history of each and the associated traditions. Kids can discover how the traditions of decorating Christmas trees and sending Christmas cards started. They can view a list of “Amazing Hanukkah Feats” and learn about the seven symbols of Kwanzaa. Kids Domain.com
    www.kidsdomain.com

For a more hands-on approach to exploring holidays, go to the Kids Domain site. It is a portal for holiday games, crafts, recipes, and e-cards relating to Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Ramadan. By clicking on a specific holiday in the “Holidays” section, children will find a wide assortment of activities. There are Hanukkah games, mazes, and word puzzles; Kwanzaa-themed word searches, crossword, and coloring pages; and Ramadan information and e-cards. Under “Christmas,” kids can send a letter to Santa, learn about how Christmas is celebrated around the world, or find Christmas recipes that are fun for the whole family to make.
