The Vatican casts a global net with a Web solution from Compaq "With the Internet, we are opening a dialogue with people on every continent. We regard the Web site as an extension of the Pope's pastoral visits." Two thousand years ago, Saint Peter and a group of other fishermen heeded a call that transformed them into "fishers of men," the 12 Apostles. Today, Saint Peter's Square in Rome is the entrance to the largest basilica in the world and the capital of Christendom, the Vatican City. And the heirs of Saint Peter are using the World Wide Web to cast a net that reaches around the world. The Holy See is employing up-to-the-minute Web technologies from Compaq Computer Corporation to carry out its ministry of evangelization. The World Wide Web site of the Vatican (http://www.vatican.va) is a resource for not only more than one billion Catholicsbut also for all people who regard the Church's teachings as an ethical and cultural touchstone. The Vatican has integrated the World Wide Web into its multimedia information outreach. "The Web is an instrument of communication not limited by time zones or geographies," says Joacquin Navarro-Valls, Phd., Director of the Holy See Press Office. "Now, any papal document is available on the Internet immediately after its announcement, and research on Church teachings, which formerly required access to a library of encyclicals, epistles, and apostolic exhortations, can be pursued in minutes via the Internet."

    Holy See
(From the Latin Sancta Sedes , Holy Chair). A term derived from the enthronement-ceremony of the bishops of Rome. The seat or chair in question must not be confounded with the ancient sedes gestatoria in the centre of the apse of St. Peter's, and immemorially venerated as the cathedra Petri , or Chair of Peter; the term means, in a general sense, the actual seat (i.e. residence) of the supreme pastor of the Church, together with the various ecclesiastical authorities who constitute the central administration. In this canonical and diplomatic sense, the term is synonymous with "Apostolic See" , "Holy Apostolic See", "Roman Church", "Roman Curia" . The origin of these terms can only be approximately ascertained. The word sedes , "chair", is an old technical term applicable to all episcopal sees. It was first used to designate the Churches founded by the Apostles; later the word was applied to the principal Christian Churches . These ecclesiae dictae majores were understood to be the five great patriarchal sees of Christian antiquity: Rome, Alexandria, Antioch, Jerusalem, and Constantinople. To these the word

Country List World Factbook Home The World Factbook 2002 Holy See (Vatican City) Introduction Holy See (Vatican City) Background: Popes in their secular role ruled portions of the Italian peninsula for more than a thousand years until the mid 19th century, when many of the Papal States were seized by the newly united Kingdom of Italy. In 1870, the pope's holdings were further circumscribed when Rome itself was annexed. Disputes between a series of "prisoner" popes and Italy were resolved in 1929 by three Lateran Treaties, which established the independent state of Vatican City and granted Roman Catholicism special status in Italy. In 1984, a concordat between the Holy See and Italy modified certain of the earlier treaty provisions, including the primacy of Roman Catholicism as the Italian state religion. Present concerns of the Holy See include the failing health of Pope John Paul II, interreligious dialogue and reconciliation, and the application of church doctrine in an era of rapid change and globalization. About 1 billion people worldwide profess the Catholic faith. Geography Holy See (Vatican City) Location: Southern Europe, an enclave of Rome (Italy)

    GOVERNMENT AND INSTITUTIONS
The Pope exercises supreme legislative, executive, and judicial power over the Holy See and the State of the Vatican City. Pope John Paul II, born in Poland, is the first non-Italian Pope in nearly five centuries. Elected on October 16, 1978, he succeeded John Paul I, whose reign was limited by his untimely death to only 34 days.
The term 'Holy See' refers to the composite of the authority, jurisdiction, and sovereignty vested in the Pope and his advisers to direct the worldwide Roman Catholic Church. As the 'central government' of the Roman Catholic Church, the Holy See has a legal personality that allows it to enter into treaties as the juridical equal of a state and to send and receive diplomatic representatives. The Holy See has formal diplomatic relations with 166 nations, including the United States. Libya, Guyana, and Angola established diplomatic relations in 1997.
Created in 1929 to administer properties belonging to the Holy See in Rome, the State of the Vatican City is recognized under international law and enters into international agreements. Unlike the Holy See, it does not receive or send diplomatic representatives.
