Introduction of New Extension Forester: Bob Wheeler
During April 1997 I was hired by the Alaska Cooperative Extension program to fill the forestry specialist position that was previously filled by Tony Gasbarro. Although my background and experience is significantly different, I will continue to strive to meet our mission "to interpret and extend relevant research based knowledge in an understandable and usable form and to encourage the application of this knowledge to solve the problems and meet the challenges that face the people of Alaska." Since moving to Fairbanks, I have been able to meet with many different organizations and individuals. During July I gave two talks in the Homer area regarding the impact of the spruce bark beetle on the community and future implications. Cooperative Extension will continue to be involved with bark beetle issues on the Kenai Peninsula. During September I coordinated the week visit of Dr. Ron Mahoney from the University of Idaho regarding a review of hardwood utilization. During November I developed three workshops on sawmilling, kiln drying, and international marketing that were held in Soldotna, Anchorage, and Fairbanks. On December 3 and 4, we convened the Forest Products Conference held in Fairbanks entitled "How Can the University of Alaska Assist Alaska's Forest Products Industry?"

The Public Lands Theater Project Project History and Overview
Two billion acres of federal land have turned public hearings into public shoutings, pitted farmers, politicians and even family members against one another, and have forced a constant redefinition of what it means to be an environmentalist. One third of our country belongs to the people. And the people are having a difficult time coming to consensus or even reasonable debate about how these lands should be managed, used and regarded. Their continued federal public ownership is being questioned. The extent to which they should produce revenue for communities and public works is being examined. What say should the people who live in public-lands dependent communities have in their ownership and use? The State Rural Development Councils in Colorado, Idaho and Utah are interested in providing a forum to raise the level of understanding and debate about key issues in public land management in the West. Using theater as a device to illuminate ideas and emotions, an unusual coalition of rural development councils, agriculture, timber, and mining groups, environmental groups and federal and state agencies developed a one-hour play, to be followed by a facilitated discussion to broaden public understanding of these difficult, divisive issues. The idea is that by experiencing the conflicts and emotion on-stage, the audience can have a more productive and genuine dialogue afterwards. The play is intended to accurately, but neutrally, portray the perspectives of: 1) public land users, 2) environmentalists, 3) leaders of resource-dependent communities, and 4) public land managers.
