Genealogical Records in Idaho
Types of Records and Where they are Held
Birth and Death Records
Idaho did not require registration of birth and death records until 1907. The law governing the registration of births and deaths was changed in 1911, at which time births and deaths were registered directly with the state. These are available by writing the Vital Statistics Unit of the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare. The State office has records since 1911; for records from 1907 to 1911 write to the County Recorder in the county where the event occurred. The earliest recorded birth records for Latah county are 1907; the earliest death records 1888. The Latah County Historical Society has a file of recent obituaries (1980s to present) from local newspapers. Most of these have been indexed. The Special Collections Department of the University of Idaho Library has several compilations of birth and death records. See the bibliography for more information.

In 1834 a trading post, Ft. Hall, was established on the Snake River near present-day Pocatello. Throughout the 1840s and 1850s, it served as a way station on the Oregon Trail, and in 1848 Idaho became part of Oregon Territory, and in 1859, part of Washington Territory. The waves of settlers over the next 30 years caused friction with the Native American population and by the 1880s the Indians were largely relegated to reservations. In the early 1860s, gold was discovered in the northern part of the state, and prospectors moved in. In 1863, Idaho Territory was created from parts of Washington Territory and Dakota Territory, and its boundaries were refined throughout that decade. Settlement boomed in the 1880s with more mining and the coming of the railroad, and Idaho was granted statehood in 1890. The first decade of the new century saw even more settlers moving into the southern part of the state, with reclamation projects making more farmland available.
