Coyote's Guide to IDL Programming
Welcome to Coyote's Guide to IDL Programming . I'm David Fanning and I am an independent IDL programming and training consultant. I started Fanning Software Consulting in late 1996. Before that, I was the Director of IDL Training at Research Systems, Inc. (RSI), a pioneer company in scientific analysis and visualization software and the developers of IDL. I have worked exclusively with IDL since 1988 and I have taught thousands of scientists and engineers to write better IDL programs. In addition to being an IDL programmer and trainer, I am the author of IDL Programming Techniques, 2nd Edition , a book written with the intention of helping you learn the essential techniques of IDL programming. Coyote's Guide to IDL Programming is a resource for people who want to learn more about IDL. I appreciate your suggestions, your questions, and any other information you would like to see published here. Please contact me through this simple form. This is what Mark Hadfield, an IDL user in New Zealand, had to say after he spent some time poking around here: Your IDL programming site is a BLOODY TREASURE, what we call in New Zealand a "taonga". RSI should pay you a great deal of money for turning their powerful but cranky data analysis system into something useful, approaching elegance.

Many valuable resources are available online for IDL programmers. A few minutes spent searching the web will often yield source code for a particular application or advice on how to solve a problem. Good programmers know when to write new code, but great programmers know when to use someone else's code. General information The RSI web site provides product information about IDL (e.g., current supported platforms), as well as marketing and technical support information. Installable versions of IDL may be downloaded from the RSI anonymous FTP site . A particularly useful resource is the searchable database of IDL technical tips from the RSI support staff. The Usenet newsgroup comp.lang.idl-pvwave is an active discussion forum for IDL programming issues, and is frequented by many expert IDL programmers who are willing to answer questions. You can also access the newsgroup via Google Groups The Astronomy Library includes thousands of IDL procedures and functions developed by the astronomical community. This site also offers a searchable index and a comprehensive list of links to other IDL-related web sites and project specific IDL libraries, including a library for reading and writing data in the Flexible Image Transport System (FITS) format. The Applied Physics Laboratory Library at Johns Hopkins University is a comprehensive general purpose IDL library containing over 600 procedures and functions.

Proliant Webserver Visual IDL Programing What is VIP? VIP is the Visual IDL Programming environment. VIP is written in the IDL language, and allows access to the IDL 5.5 computing environment. With VIP, it is possible to exploit the powerful data analysis and visualization capabilities of IDL 5.5 without knowing the details of the language. How Does VIP Work? The data flow model concept is the foundation of VIP. A data flow model is a graphic model that depicts a software system as a combination of data processing elements connected to one another. Programming with VIP is accomplished by drawing data flow models. Hundreds of encapsulated IDL 5.5 routines are provided as VIP built-in nodes. The VIP built-in nodes are categorized into three basic groups: Input, Process, and Output. See the VIP Functional Summary for a complete list of the programming nodes included in VIP. VIP is available in two configurations: VIP and VIP+IDL Do You…

This IDL Programming Tips and Tricks database is constantly being updated. I have a large collection of tips I've collected from teaching hundreds of IDL programming classes and from the IDL news group (comp.lang.idl-pvwave). I hope to add them to this list over time. I try to add a half dozen or so new tips per month. If you have a question that you would like to see answered here, please fill out this question form . I'd like to provide answers to questions that most interest IDL users.

Corporate Info News Solutions Products ... Index Java IDL Programming Concepts This topic includes the following sections: Exceptions CORBA has two types of exceptions: standard system exceptions, which are fully specified by the OMG, and user exceptions, which are defined by the individual application programmer. CORBA exceptions differ slightly from Java exception objects, but those differences are largely handled in the mapping from IDL-to-Java. Topics in this section include: Differences Between CORBA and Java Exceptions To specify an exception in IDL, the interface designer uses the raises keyword. This is similar to the throws specification in Java. When you use the exception keyword in IDL, you create a user-defined exception. The standard system exceptions need not (and cannot) be specified this way. System Exceptions CORBA defines a set of standard system exceptions, which are generally raised by the ORB libraries to signal systemic error conditions including:
  • Server-side system exceptions, such as resource exhaustion or activation failure.

Notes on the First Edition
When I wanted to draw my first line plot in IDL (Interactive Data Language from Research Systems, Inc.) over 10 years ago, I had to read through the entire manualtwiceto understand how it was done. Although the documentation has changed dramatically in the intervening years, it is still difficult for someone new to IDL to sift through the documentation, separating the twenty percent of the information they need daily from the eighty percent they need infrequently. What I set out to do in this book is to describe by example those IDL programming techniques I find essential in my own daily programming tasks. The book has been refined over so many years I feel confident predicting you will find described within its pages over eighty percent of what you ever want to do in IDL. Another goal for this book was to demonstrate for fellow scientists who may have taught themselves computer programming how to write an "elegant" IDL program. I've been teaching people how to use IDL for almost as long as I have been using it myself. I've seen a lot of programs that "work", but are otherwise poorly written. (Alas, many of these programs have been my own.) These programs are difficult to extend, modify, and maintain. In this book I wanted to lay out a handful of simple IDL programming principles that would allow users to write elegant programs with resizeable graphics windows, easy and automatic access to PostScript, GIF, and JPEG file output, intelligent use of color, and with intuitive graphical user interfaces. Moreover, I wanted to describe an object-oriented programming style that makes programs easy to maintain, modify, and extend over time. These principles (and especially the information on writing widget programs, or programs with graphical user interfaces) can be found nowhere else.

Better IDL HDF Documentation
QUESTION: I can't make heads or tails of the IDL HDF scientific file format documentation. Can you help me read and write an HDF file? ANSWER: There really is no other way to say this: the IDL HDF documentation is not very good. What was really missing for me when I started to learn how to read and write HDF files was a coherent explanation of the HDF application programming interface (API). Since I couldn't find one, I wrote my own. It eventually became a chapter on reading and writing HDF files that I included in IDL Programming Techniques The chapter covers the HDF scientific data format in general, but it specifically shows you how to read and write scientific data sets (SDS), including data sets with unlimited dimensions. In addition, you will learn how to read and write file and SDS attributes (the metadata that can be stored with the data itself), how to use dimensions and scales, and how to store a color palette with your HDF file, so the person working with your data sees exactly what you see. Here is a table that describes the API for the SD interface. I don't think I could have figured anything out without this table!

http://epsilon.nought.de/idl.html
IDL, the Interactive Data Language , is an optimised programming language for data analysis, visualisation and array handling. It is interpreted, and therefore not so fast as for example C, but you can save a lot of time while developing your programs. I really like it, although it is much too expensive in my opinion. One problem I encountered is that the IDL community seems to be rather small and it can be very hard to find some help or useful programs in IDL on the net. To make my own small contribution I therefore publish here some of my routines in IDL. Most of them are rather simple tools, written to simplify the daily handling of SAR data. If somebody else have a program or something else which he thinks is worth to add, just mail me and I will upload it. I'll of course try to add more and more things by myself, but as always, the more help I get, the better the library will get!!
