Ed Vander Weele Curriculum Center The mission of the Curriculum Materials Center (CMC) is to support the education curriculum by providing educational materials for the use of our teachers in training. The CMC contains K-12 textbooks, professional books for teachers, posters, kits and a pamphlet file. The Curriculum Materials Center is located on the second floor of the library, while the children's literature collection is located on the first floor. The CMC's holdings can be found by searching Illinet Online , with the exception of the K-12 textbooks. School District #54, Schaumburg, Illinois
School District #54 in Schaumburg, Illinois, has developed the following technology plan:
    " SCHOOL DISTRICT #54
    INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES PLAN
March 1996 Looking Toward the 21st Century... The purpose of this plan is to provide a clear vision for uses of information and communication technologies for teaching and learning throughout the District 54 School Community. Our top priority has been to consider what critical elements are needed to create an optimal learning environment for all of our children and to build a more collaborative community for all of our stakeholders. Our world is rapidly changing as we settle into this Information Age. We have ready access to abundant sources of information, and we are able to communicate with virtually any individual on the planetand even with those in outer space. That is, if we possess both the technological tools and the intellectual skills required for such endeavors. The Secretary's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS) Report of 1991 has identified essential abilities which will be needed for Americans in the 21st Century.

State Status Reports
ESA Task Force
February 8, 1999 New Leadership
ESA members reported changes in their states (some expected, some not) as a result of recent elections. Illinois has a new governor, Republican George Ryan, who has promised to designate 51 percent of general revenue funds for education and work force readiness. Minnesota's surprise winner in the governor's race is Jesse Ventura, a Reform party candidate. Governor Ventura has put together a $33 billion budget that includes 5.3 percent for education, the highest funding since 1992. Iowa and Ohio have also elected new governors. Iowa's Thomas Vilsack is a Democrat; Ohio's Bob Taft, a Republican. Both Illinois and Ohio have new state superintendents. Max McGee is Illinois's first state superintendent coming directly from the local superintendency. McGee wants to move forward with the standards implementation and quality assurance and stop measuring schools according to a single state assessment figure and then comparing them across state by the mean score. Ohio's new state superintendent, Susan Zelman, has never been a superintendent or a building principal. She has, however, worked extensively with legislators and has both university and state department background. Professional Standards
Indiana is halfway through the first year of a professional standards pilot. A teacher coming out of school now holds a provisional license for the first two years. After that, the teacher's portfolio and performance will be evaluated by local corporations that will make recommendations for a permanent teaching license. Another change taking place is that teachers can no longer get their teaching license renewed in any subject area; they have to take continued advanced study in one topic area. In three years, this will be a statewide requirement.

FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC INTRODUCTION Advocates of school library media programs have long been convinced of the relationship between quality library media programs and academic achievement. Most studies of this relationship were conducted between 1959 and 1979, were limited in scope, and usually used a small number of subjects in a limited geographical area. This study was designed both to update the existing research and to examine the relationship between library media programs and student achievement. METHODOLOGY Ideally, schools included in the sample for a study such as this would be selected on a random, stratified, or quota basis. None of these sampling designs was possible, because schools included in the sample had to have library media centers that responded to the 1989 survey of school library media centers in Colorado and had to use the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS) or Tests of Achievement and Proficiency (TAP). These data were available for only 221 of 1,331 public elementary and secondary schools in Colorado during the 1988-89 school year. The study relied entirely upon available data about school library media centers and their school and community contexts to predict norm-referenced test scores.
