Together they plan to raise funds for quake victims
By Katherine Roth/AP Former President Bill Clinton met on Feb. 2 with Indian American businessmen and some Indian government officials to launch a money-raising project for victims of an earthquake that killed thousands. Speaking in front of the office of Citibank, Clinton said he met for three hours with Victor Menezes, president and CEO of Citibank and Citicorp, and about a dozen other Indian American business leaders. They made plans to form a group, Americans for Indian Relief and Reconstruction, which will raise funds to help victims of the Indian earthquake. The U.S. government has pledged a total of $9 million so far, to help the victims of the Jan. 26 quake that killed at least 14,000 people. Officials estimate the final toll could reach 35,000. Total damage from the quake has been estimated at more than $5 billion.

Home Asian American Studies at the U of M Faculty Courses Resources Asian American Studies at the University of Minnesota Asian American Studies has several necessary functions in any academic setting. First, it provides a scholarly and critical context for understanding the history, politics, and culture of Americans of Asian descent, and for looking at the situation of racial minorities in the United States and other parts of the Americas. Second, it allows intellectual and artistic collaboration, and the genuine exchange of ideas and knowledge, to take place in settings both inside and outside the classroom. Finally, it works to tie the resources of the university more closely to those of local communities, particularly those with a high population of Asian immigrants and Asian Americans. In terms of its locale, community resources, and faculty, the University of Minnesota is uniquely positioned to develop the teaching of Asian American history, politics, literature, and culture. Study Finds Deadly Spike in Racial Violence Against Asian Americans
[Los Angeles Times - 3/11/02] Racist attacks against Asian Americans spiked significantly nationwide after Sept. 11, claiming two lives and causing injuries to dozens more, according to a report released today by the National Asian Pacific American Legal Consortium. The study, "Backlash: When America Turned on Its Own," tracked 243 incidents in the three-month period after the terrorist attacks. By contrast, bias-based attacks against Asian Americans for typical 12-month periods number around 400, according to the report. Victims included a Sikh American from Mesa, Ariz., who was shot and killed by a gunman who yelled "I stand for America all the way," and a Pakistani American grocer who was killed in Texas. Nonviolent crimes against Asian Americans ranged from vandalism to verbal harassment. Businesses have been pelted with Molotov cocktails and homes burned to the ground, according to the report. Among those targeted have been women and children. Singled out as targets, according to the report, have been South Asian Americans, including Indian and Pakistani Americans, but especially Sikh Americans, a religious group often mistakenly perceived to be Arab because many of their men wear turbans and long beards.

As the crowd entered the Donald A. Seawell Grand Ballroom at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts for Celebrate India 2000, the diversity of Asian Americans attending was immediately noticeable and impressive. The largely Asian American crowd was made up of Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Laotian, Taiwanese, Thai, Vietnamese and others in addition to South Asians. Like many recent Asian activities and events in the past several years, Asian Americans are supporting other Asian Americans in their programs and other endeavors. The success of the Asian Film Festival in Aurora is another recent example. This event was the culmination of a vision held by a number of community leaders. The Kindred Spirits Council, a volunteer organization dedicated to infusing the diversity of cultural perspectives into DCPA programming, endorsed Celebrate India 2000. Patty Coutts, an Asian representative on Kindred Spirits Council, believed that it was time for Asian Americans to be recognized as an important cultural aspect of the Denver metroplex and of Colorado. She encouraged Purnima Voria, Past President of the India Association, to organize an event. The first thing Voria did was to establish a Pan-Asian Celebrate India 2000 Committee. Lester Ward, President of DCPA, worked closely with this group and committed DCPA resources to Celebrate India 2000.

var site="s12asiannation" ;var g_frames=true; As I mentioned, according to the 2000 U.S. census, Asian Americans make up 4.3% of the total U.S. population that's about 12 million people who identify themselves as at least part Asian. However, this number represents an increase of 63% from the 1990 census, making Asian Americans the fastest growing of all the major racial/ethnic groups in the U.S., in terms of percentage growth. But in so many ways, the presence of Asian Americans is much more prominent than even these numbers suggest.
